How was your Day(Z)?

That's me, no gun in hand & waving. Shortly after this picture we transferred down to Balota airfield from Zeleno barracks where the photo is taken.

No sooner had we arrived at the Southern airfield, after a pretty uneventful journey  apart from a few infected. The guy in tanker helmet kills a dude in the A.C.T. camped under the stairs. The victim was called Billy & by the time I arrive at the door yer man has a fecking kitchen knife in his hand and is gutting the corpse asking if any of us "want some? There's plenty to go around if anyone was hungry".

I turn round, run out of the A.C.T. and run through the fence to the left hand side of the entrance. Hannibal Lecter shouts a warning after me that i've an aggroed infected chasing me. I haven't heard anything, I spin round just  as a woman in purple comes sprinting at me howling like the banshee.  I just about manage to raise my m4, I can see her blood stained cheeks and cold dead eyes. The bullets smash into her body & she crumbles into a lifeless heap at my feet. The face still contorted in a perpetual snarl of animalistic rage.

Relieved I turn back towards Cherno and the forrest when two shots go off right beside my ear *BANG* *BANG*!!  It gives me such a shock
I knock a cup of coffee all over my mouse and table! AGGGGGGGGH!! Shit!!!!!!! this becomes my priority to deal with while telling the rest of the group i'd come under fire.

They were all as much use as fucking tits on a bull, 2 had no eyes at all and the other was busy butchering dinner for themselves.

funny thing is though, I wasn't dead either by some luck. After I cleaned up the spilled coffee best I could, I could see everything was turning grey at an alarming rate on my screen, I knew I was bleeding bad. My reaction was to just to get bandaged up there and then. Part of me was pretty sure I was dead anyway. I think I should of just legged it & this is where I made my fatal mistake.  Not only did I bandage, after tabbing I see my arm is broken too so I  start futtering about looking for morphine in my inventory . No sooner had I found it, started to apply and I was dead.

The cannibal? they went down next after a couple of minutes stand off.  Our other comrades ( the sniper with the Mosin + LRS and the skater with the pimped out 101)  had got themselves into a position at the old barrack ruins by this stage.

Mosin identified who we believe killed us,and he executed them looting the Cannibals body. Pretty soon three armed survivors in total we're identified by my remaining group. One of which, who managed to kill the Asian chick with the AK. I dunno how it went down, but it ended with someone saying "hello big boy".

Things after this got a bit strange. why? well because the sniper also killed a person looting the body of the skater, like he had done previously if you remember with the Cannibal.  About a minute later a fully geared player appeared beside the sniper saying "hello big boy" the last thing they heard before the "You are dead" screen.  We duuno if it was the same person or not.

*post script.*

A  5th member of the group landed to the party about an hour later on the same server. Both the cannibal and Mosin had managed to get back to the airfield and both made kills again before dying.  The 5th member found no one in Balota at all, when he moved onto Cherno it seemed dead as well. So he just quit.  History doesn't relate if he ended it by his own hand or if the character vanishes in the forth coming wipe. We were all too busy playing battlefield.

TLDR = looking forward to .53

logged in public as a freshie outside cherno and managed to find some nice stuff, black raincaot, a sweater, flare gun but no flares for it,and the usual fair. I snuck into the firestation adn after a while I hear voices coming from downstairs, As I'm moving downwards my legs take damage and I have to run down. Then I have the misfortune to get gunned down by m4 fire as some guy is executing another freshie. An M4 already? :/

I respawned outside Elektro and Made my way south as there was a war there, so much shooting in town. Tried making a fire but couldnt get it to work. I then met a Norwegian fellow and we worked on making the fire for a while til we got it. Then the server restarted :/

I respawned as a freshie on 1pp instead in Polana. Found a hastchet and wasted some zeds with it. its really good. Also found some flares for flare gun. While climbing the Novo industrial towers I spotted a mosin on an adjacent rooftop so i went for it and promptly missed a ladder and died :/

First day post-wipe and Christ I hate going through all this again. Spawn somewhere far north east, gear up pretty well, two zombies on me, close piano house doors, zombies walk straight through them, etc. Respawn near Cherno. Ahhh, that's a bit better. Make my way to Balota where I find enough food to not actually die of starvation, some Gorka clothing, and an SKS with some ammo.

Make my way north west to GM, find truck, fully fuelled, woot!, Head for the Myshkino tents to have a serious meal.

Clearly the truck just is not going to make it back up that steep little hill on the way back to GM, even with the turbo on. So I get out.

There's only me and one other player on this server. You know what's coming. As I get out of the truck, player with blue mountain backpack runs straight past me out of nowhere and stops. I spin round, beginning to assume I might have thrown away the past two hours of gearing and travelling. But wait, what's this? He has no gun, and instead brandishes what I think is a...sickle at me.

He runs around a bit. I grab my mic and tell him I'm friendly, and he's welcome to use the truck. But instead he runs off towards Myshkino...

I did, briefly, contemplate shooting him - but doubt he would have had anything I really needed, so it would have been sadism pure and simple. Hope he found the single SKS in the Myshkino tents on that server.

Hmm, my experience of 0.53...

Public

New loot everywhere - brooms, hatchets, ice picks, hey hooks, lead pipes, tyre iron type things and flare guns (but no flares), in fact, they seem to be spawning so much that they are sometimes making it difficult to find the items they are displacing (hacksaws for example).  On the plus side, there are now raincoats everywhere which is great and I like the idea of armbands.

I collected a full drybag of gear and decided to leave it in the forest under a tree as a stash.  I dragged it into the vicinity window and...it vanished.  Crawled around with the inventory screen open but it was nowhere to be seen.  That was annoying.

Private

Logged into my favourite "not wiped" private character and my hunting backpack was gone.  Just...gone.  With it I lost my sawn off shotgun and snap loader.  That was really annoying.  I later found an IZ shotgun and was holding it in my hands until i could find a hacksaw (see above) when I drank a can of soda.  30 seconds later, just down the road a zombie attacks me, I left click to raise my shotgun and it's not there - ooops.  Axe the zombie, run back to the room where I drank the soda and...the shotgun is gone.  I look in all the rooms, all around the outside of the house, and then repeat that process for the last 2 buildings I was in, just in case I dropped it earlier.  Nothing.  Totally vanished.  That was more than really annoying.

On both servers, there seem to be more infected, but that may not be the case, just my initial impression.  Their ability to spot you seems to be even more acute, basically, if they have line of sight to you, at any distance, they will go aggro.  Also, they are now once again definitely passing through walls and doors regularly, even when not in their lunge animation.  That's a shame since they seemed to have improved between my initial playing and since I returned a few months ago.  Definitely feels like a step back and theat they've somehow regressed - still I know they are still just placeholders for what is to come.  EDIT - Oh yeah, I just remembered.  About half of the infected I met last night seemed to be totally silent. I twice got attacked by ones that didn't make any sound at all.  That's a real concern...

The item dissapearing thing has been around since 051 at least. Its a hopeless miss n guess game if your gear will vanish or not.

As for the zeds I've noticed that they run up to you without screaming now. That usually never happened before so the first times it happened i believed it to be players and was mildly surprised by a friendly zed instead.

Okay then! Had a decent day today mired with some regret.

First of all- I had some equipment stashed for ZH so we could look a bit uniform... A UN helmet for him, some similar gorka pattern camo- Unfortunately we missed dishing it out to him by about 2 minutes (mum called him down for supper) and I hadn't been able to find the bag I hid. Short version is he ended up having to log out and then .53 came along- so she's gone. Not a huge deal- just an annoyance. He has some hardware to keep him busy and I got loads of ammo for it on my character.

Anyway- logged in on my normal server and there were quite a few people on. I figured- meh... I've got some good kit and I've had some practice with using it- AND I mean well so I should be fine, right?

There were some persistence glitched areas around Solichniy so I headed over there first to see if that "persisted." Fortunately or unfortunately it did not- so it was relatively barren. Cleared datum- ran down to the next row of houses where I knew there were some boats to look for netting  "just in case" I decide I want to ghillie again. To be honest- I don't think I will be given the issues I've had with it so far.

As I was heading back north towards the factory and Berezino, running down the middle of the road fashioning a new blue armband and my UN helmet I spotted another survivor running east down a road through Solichniy. I saw him draw a weapon that was held like a firearm of some sort so I figured- okay... two ways to go about this. Draw a weapon so he knows I'm packing or just sit in the middle of the road. I actioned both of those options- First drawing the weapon and then deciding that wasn't exactly a peaceful approach I put it away and sat on the road for a bit. He eventually closed in with me enough to call out to me on direct.

We had a bit of a standoff- he asked if I was friendly... younger sounding voice that I later learned belonged to a 13 year old. He played it well though- approached with caution and realized I was loaded out pretty heavy. We were chatting and he came at me with a rope out. I knew what he was up to and even though I didn't feel like he was going to kill me and eat me I wasn't going to get tied up. A note came up in red at the bottom left of my screen that he was "trying" to tie me up. I backed away. "Yeah, don't go trying to tie me up at this point... I don't trust anyone in here that much yet."

"I've never done it before- can you tie people up with rope?"

"As per .53 apparently yes you can but please don't practice it on me. Where you headed?"

"North."

"Berezino? That's where I have my little setup- well... had my little setup. Had a gardening thing going there until the wipe. All my stashed equipment is gone... so I'm out here trying to do what I can with what I have. Need anything?"

"No I'm good. There are a lot of people on the server now so we should probably find some cover- you have that bright blue helmet on and are easy to see." He had a bright red drybag on- so I wasn't too worried about my helmet but he kept doing the sniper shuffle so I could tell he's been around the game for awhile.

"Fair enough- well I'm heading back to Berezino too so if you want to tag along let's go."

Had a good discussion on the way to Berezino- about 10 minutes or so between cantering and sprinting. I'd found some pumpkin seeds and had a shovel in my bag so I was good to go. He mentioned he had a friend coming in and he was "asking him not to kill me" to which I replied "Yeah, if you can actually TELL him not to kill me I'd be a bit more comfortable with that."

When we got to Berezino we friended each other on Steam and he passed along some TS3 info. I climbed on that server and talked to his friend who was onboard straight away. He was running in from Dubrovka or so so we didn't expect him to land on us for a bit. Meanwhile I got some crops growing and while I was in the middle of digging my new friend called out that we had someone coming in.

"Stop right there... I need you to stop right there." He had his shottie pulled out and this guy came running in pretty lightly loaded... I admit he didn't seem like too much of a threat- but he wasn't responding to commands. "I need you to stop moving!" The guy just kept running around in circles. I had drawn my AKM and was backing up my guy... is this guy going to be punchy or is he going to be reasonable. Does he think we're going to eat him? Does he think we're going to help him? At this point- I'm not even sure if we're going to help him as he runs around in circles while my guy is telling him to stop. This kid isn't going to F around- if this guy doesn't stop running around he's going to get killed. This I knew I could take as fact based on that 10 minute conversation I mentioned earlier.

I got into speaking range "Bud I know what you're thinking right now but we're actually here with good intentions and trust nobody- so just do what you're told and we'll get through this."

"Why are you doing this? Why? Why?"

Unfortunately because I'm joined on TS3 I'm hearing that conversation with a few strange voices and have a really hard time figuring out who is talking on what channel. TS3 also decided to only stream through the monitor- while all my game sounds were on my headset. I couldn't hear him at all.

He runs around a bit more and my guy fires a couple shots at him or around him- not sure which. The guy goes to ground (alive) and is promptly tied up (with rope) successfully. "Oh, so it does work!"

"Yup. Alright now then- we're not going to hurt you as long as you do what you're told."

"Don't wiggle!" my guy says as we see the guy on his knees wiggling back and forth.

"Yeah- don't do that... Okay, now on to the good part of this... We are here to help. There is a well behind us for water and I'm growing some plants that we can give you. Do you need water? Do you need food?"

"Why? Why did you shoot at me?" I can't remember the response since it was getting a bit hairy- keep in mind the only guy I've killed begged me to kill him so he could spawn somewhere else... I wasn't ready to put a bullet in someone while he's tied up.

The problem was resolved for me, however... when the guy wiggled free of his rope bindings (took about 20 seconds of wiggling) and was promptly double tapped with a shotgun in the face.

"Oooooooooooh man... Okay, well I wish you hadn't done that..." I would have handled that differently- but I wasn't playing just by my own rules and one thing I've learned about this game is it's a series of compromises- find someone who will help you and sometimes you need to meet him in the middle.

His friend did show up and a bit to my surprise had some excess gear on him that was prohibiting from storing the things he wanted. He told us to pick through anything on the ground- which was EXTREMELY generous since I'd recently lost ZH's cache.

One thing that was, as mentioned above, more than a little annoying was if I had something in hand but no room to store it in my inventory and wanted to put it down (since you can't put anything down if it's in your hand) by switching to another inventory item, the item in my hand previously would just evaporate. Happened with pumpkin, happened with matches... happened with paper. Bug report submitted- but please just be aware of it.

Other than that- just a good day overall thanks to my new friends! Hatz and Wes- great to meet you and thanks for your help!

Spent tonight hunting the coast near Kamenka. Got a few kills on people swimming. Almost feel bad about it.. but it is what is. Also found out you can disable a vehicle with enough bullets and cart wheeled a guy when I ran him over.

I spent last night rediscovering the art of creating and lighting a fire and cooking food, or in my case simply ruining it.

The new fire\cooking mechanics are a pain compared to the old ones because they are more realistic, but that just makes them all the more satisfying, which is a good thing.  I'm still working on understanding exactly how they function, since last night I was slightly the worse for wear, but roughly it seems to work like this.

You create the fireplace kit as before, eg rags\paper\book\bandage and sticks to make the kit itself.  Then put it down on a flat, open surface where it's not raining.  The main difference here seems to be that the terrain must be really quite flat or you get a red error message in the corner of the screen that it's "not flat enough here" or some such.  Add some fuel (according to the wiki you need 5 sticks or 3 firewood - but I could only ever add 1 firewood not 3.  Besides, if you do need 3 firewood that makes no sense because AFAIK, you cannot stack firewood in your inventory and each one takes 4 slots so you would need 12 slots for 3 of them, whereas you can stack 5 sticks into a single inventory item taking only 2 slots.  So who would EVER take 3 firewood?  Stupid..) anyway, I always use 5 sticks as fuel becuase it cooks the food quickly.  So, you have a fireplace ready to light.  Now put your matches in your hand and ignite.  Voila, a roaring fire - basically the same process as before but the terrain must be flat - oh, and the new fireplace has a LOT more slots, either 12 of 15, compared to 5 previously.

Now we get to the main difference - the actual cooking.  In the old days (pre 0.53) you simply put your steaks into the fireplace and waited for them to change into cooked steaks, then took them out before they changed into burned steaks.  So I put my steaks into the fire, along with a zuchinni (well it fits now and I wanted to see what would happen) and I waited maybe 30 seconds.  The icons didn't change or move (which they used to) but when I looked again all 3 items were now ruined.  Still raw but now ruined.  Hmm...

Sadly I ran out of time (and steaks) but I suspect that you now have to have something to actually cook the food in or on (e.g. a frying pan or cooking pot - maybe even a stone?). My next challenge is to find some more animal meat to cook and try this out.  Oh, and I also need to work out tanning, since I could not craft a leather sack with my deer pelt - I guess it needs to be tanned first now.  This will make life trickier for the survivalist hunter type since you'll need to find lime to tan the leather first and if you want to make leather clothes (I do!) you need a LOT of pelts and lime - and there things take a LOT of inventory space too...

Meanwhile, I looted Polana again and came away with a Mosin and ammo, more canned food (to keep me going until I get setup fully as a hunter type) and a load of drybags (as above, great for storing pelts and lime in whilst I work on the tanning process to make my leather clothes and backpack).  All of the bags, the Mosin and also a Crossbow are now hidden in the woods - I just pray that no one finds them...and that I get enough time before Wednesday's maintenance to actually use them!

EDIT - Oh yeah, one last thing about fires in 0.53 - in 0.52 you could simply remove the fuel (sticks or firewood) the fire would go out and you could pack it up.  In 0.53 the fuel seems to disappear once you add it and light the fire.  At this point I couldn't work out how to put the fire out so I just left it there burning away.  Good job I lit it far away from my drybag camp!

I, for one, think it's marvellous that the cooking mechanic is now 10 times more complicated, while anything you put down disappears, and Zs can merrily run though walls... :|

I just pull out my water bottle / canteen and it used to give you an "extinguish" option. Not sure if that's still available but might be worth a try and makes sense.

I'm all for more realistic fire & cooking mechanics, coupled with a general increase in the difficulty of actual survival (this is, after all, a zombie apocalypse survival game) but yeah the disappearing items and general Z behaviour has definitely gotten MUCH worse in the last 2 patches.  I never met zombies in forests in 0.51, very rarely in 0.52 (when they chased an animal into the trees) and now, in 0.53, I can be happily sat in a forest and an aggro'd military zombie (it's always been a military one so far) will come out of nowhere.  Walls are once again not a problem for them, they have 20/20 vision and can see as if equipped with a pristine LRS and some of them are silent.  Still, it's an alpha, they are placeholders, etc... and I can see continual improvement in the game happening with every patch, even if some of them feel a bit like 2 steps forwards, 1 step back.

I guess it's just a case of learning the new "rules" of this patch and adapting to them - even if they are annoying.

Lol, I never knew there was an extinguish option but it makes perfect sense.  However, I have yet to find a water bottle or canteen since the wipe. :-(

Also, given that it is now supposedly possible to put gasoline into water bottles and canteens, something our avatars apparently cannot detect (which is just totally stupid), what happens if we pour a bottle of "water" over a fire only to discover it's actually gasoline??!!  I suggest a new status effect:   Eyebrows: singed

I swam to the island going to check the prison out. Ran around and couldnt find it. I then checked the dayzdb map and it turned out I went to the wrong island :/

Logged in with anohter character and found the prison island, swam there and looked around. It was quite nice but there was no weapons there. I did found a flaregun and flares and that was quite sweet. They really light up the place.

Logged in with another guy and almost immediately found a V3S in Zelenogorsk. Full tank and all. Drove around with it and boy do you get around. Went to the Myshkino tents, vybor military base and airfield. I found a large military tent but had no way of using it. I'm glad I didn't give up all my gear for it too as I was driving for the coast the server crashed. Now I don't know what happens as the truck will be gone.

Tonight's session was all about cooking and tanning.

Things started well with an immediate discovery of 3 bags of lime in a greenhouse on the outskirts of Polana but due to their large size (6 slots each) I only took 2. I dropped them off at my stash and did a quick check to see what else was needed only to discover that the latest victim of disappearing item syndrome was...my cooking pot. I didn't recall seeing any in Polana (though I hadn't been looking since I thought I already had one) so I decided to try Gorka for one.

I made my way around the edges of the forests, keeping a look out for other survivors and any wild animals. There was no sign of either. Gorka proved to be pretty much a total bust despite apparently not having been looted. The only thing I found that was even remotely useful was some rope (good for making bags). Another thing that happened was that I found a loot explosion, a lootplosion? explootsion? massive persistence failure? I'm not sure of the correct slang term but basically this one room probably had 500 items in it - sadly it was all canned food, soda, small arms ammo (.22, 380, etc) and jackets but it was still amusing to see - shame it probably means that other parts of the map are devoid of items...

Next stop Dubrovka which, like Gorka, was unlooted. But there was still no sign of either a cooking pot (or frying pan) or any animal to try cooking if I did find one. Dubrovka is an odd town, made up of 4 distinctly seperate groups of buildings and I had cleared all 4 without finding anything of use when I decided to just give up. Enough was enough. There's a possible truck spawn in a building North of the town so I decided to take a look there, just in case my luck turned and I could at least drive back to camp.

And that's when I saw the deer.

It was further to the North, just beyond yet another outlying building so I decided to quickly check that small house as I passed it. Therein I finally found a cooking pot. I closed with the deer and then, embarrassingly, took half a dozen shots to take it down (4 missed, I have no idea how...) then skinned it. I used a pristine improvised stone knife which yielded 2×85% & 2×83% steaks, plus the pelt and guts. I took all the meat and pelt and jogged back to base.

I used 40% of a full bag of lime to tan the pelt into 4 pieces of tanned leather which stacked into a 2x2 square. However, I now hit a dead end. I tried using a kitchen knife, steak knife and the improvised stone knife on both the tanned leather and a normal deer pelt that I already had but I couldn't find any crafting option. I also tried combining sticks, wire, rope and tape with both types and couldn't get anything to happen.

Deciding to look at that in the morning I turned to my cooking pot. Yesterday's fire was still there but out and fueless so I added 5 more sticks and lit it up, which took a few attempts due to the wind. I added the tripod to the fire and the cooking pot to the tripod and hit another dead end as I seemed to be unable to then put the steaks into the pot. Instead, they appeared to simply go into the fire and my first one simply became ruined again without, apparently, actually cooking. I tried playing around with a second steak, trying to get it into the pot, but it simply vanished so I called it a night.

So, unless anyone knows anything better, it looks to me like we cannot currently craft leather bags (and possibly other leather items too) or cook food. If you do know better please share!

Edit..oh, leather sewing kit to make leather clothes!!

Right, so you need the following

Leather Hat - 1 piece tanned leather

Leather pants - 3 pieces

Leather Moccasins - 2 pieces

Leather storage vest - 4 pieces

Crafting these reduces the condition of your leather sewing kit and I only had sufficient to make the storage vest and a hat.  As soon as I can find another leather sewing kit and another deer I'll make the rest.

The leather storage vest seems really good, 10 slots is 2 better than an assault vest, but it looks a bit...meh.  The inspect option also seems to be bugged so you can only spin it on the horizontal axis, not the vertical, so it looks really "flat"

The hat is very similar in shape to the cowboy hat, but just a bit smaller.

Pictures!

So its been a while since my last post here. Lost plenty of gear in the wipe, but i didnt care too much about it since i was playing private hives anyway. But today i had some extra time and decided to have another go on a public. I spawned near Berezino on an average pop server, and made my way inland without much problems. Found a V3S and decided to head south to my favorite area, to try and get some nice gear. I made a wrong turn somewhere, and ended up somewhere above the Northeastern airfield, i think at the outskirts of Svetlojarks.

I cant remember the last time i got lost on the map, but it was nice to experience it again. So, i headed back south, and southwest cross country in the V3S, but by the time i got to Kabanino next to the other airfield, the server went offline and didnt come back up.

So i had to relog to a different server, and got rolled back all the way to Grishino. So i made a trip to the airfield, without much success. I headed back south on foot...and after what seemed like an entire day, i was finaly back in my hometown of Chapaevsk. I had picked up the basics along the way : an SKS, a Magnum with a bunch of speedloaders, a raincoat and a backup gorka set. So i decided to do a quick check of the prison. Nothing there...

Then i got a call from a friend, and i ran into a random appartment building. While distracted on the phone, i ran upstairs to the roof. The call ended, and i wanted to head back down, when i spot something in the corner of my eye on the balcony of the building accross the street : Its a tent.

its only the second time i find a tent, so i am feeling pretty happy. I decide to head back inland towards zelenogorsk with a little detour. I am just running along in the middle of nowhere, with my magnum in hand because it somehow feels like i am running faster with it. Anyway, out of the blue, a loud crack: i just got hit by something....It sounded like a .22 sporter, but i am not sure. I am bleeding thats for sure. Another shot : this time its clear that its a Mosin, and its not verry far away. I try to zigzag my way out of trouble, but i get hit again and fall unconscious. I am already sobbing over my lost tent....

when i wake up again with the shooter standing over what he thinks is my lifeless body... He is definatly not prepared for this.... I get up immediatly and fire a barage of magnum shots at him. I can see blood flying out of him while he is running around like a madman. He tries to aim his Mosin, but its not working out for him. The speedloader comes to work again and i can instantly unleash another barage of .357 at him. He takes 2 more hits and drops dead on the spot...

All his stuff is ruined, but to my suprize everything in my backpack is still good. Weird because i was sure i got hit from behind. Anyway, i bandaged up, took his axe (thanks buddy) and head for cover with my tent still instact.

If the guy who tried to Mosin me happens to read this : next time, make sure.....

Im loving this.

Intense situation at the prison island! A tale of closing doors and clenched buttholes!

After finding myself in Balota after fruitlessly chasing someone who had tried to kill me in Cherno, I decided to have a swim and go visit the prison island. There were around 25 others on the server, but as it was private, I went into the water anyway. I had some nice civilian gear, raincoat, drybag, hunter pants, and a repeater which I had luckily found at Komarovo's industrial area moments before jumping in the water, so I was not totally defenseless. After a long swim, which was interrupted by a server restart, I reached the island. After exploring for a bit, not finding much useful gear, I went into the prison complex, which is a lot bigger than it looks! After nearly getting lost, and finding myself an AK-74 and two full mags in the lookout tower, I was on my way back down. Then, out of nowhere, I hear a door slamming shut nearby, and catch a glimpse of a blue drybag going through the second floor hallway. I duck into the staircase and lock the door, then I do the same on the first floor. As I make my way up the stairs to close the third floor off, I hear it opening and closing. Gun at the ready, I crawl further up the stairs, heart pounding. I figured the guy went up the stairs to search the towers, so I quickly left the staircase, locking the third door behind me. If the guy has no lockpick, he isn't leaving. So with my gun pointed at the door from an angle, and watching my six like my head was on a swivel, I wait. A minute or so passes, and suddenly the guy appears at the door. He has the repeater I left up there in hand. I'd taken all the bullets out, but since Magnum ammo is not hard to come by, I have to assume he is locked and loaded. The following happens in about twenty seconds... I call for him to lower the gun, he fires a shot but misses. I respond with a short burst, and hit him somewhere on the torso. He runs down the stairs, but knowing he is trapped there, I go after him, inching down the stairwell. By now I know I have the upper hand, but even so, one well-aimed shot is enough to end my luck. So I call out again, telling him that he does not have to die if he surrenders. He does not respond, but I can hear him starting to bandage up, so I run down and finish him off with another burst. After confirming he is dead, I take some .357 and 5.45 rounds off him and exit the prison, praying that nobody else has been attracted by the gunfire. I saw nobody else, so I ran into one of the sheds down by the shore and logged out, still shaking from the experience.

10/10 would soil pants again!

Not much to report on this end. Trying to get reconnected with this particular server's quirks... finding the spawn glitched areas. We found one in a VERY unexpected location- had a couple MP5s along with all the ammo and clips needed... very nice but I got bored with it quickly and tossed it. My companion and I made our way from there to the NWAF so I could try and replace my pautrev Gorka gear that was ruined and grab some stuff for ZH but the server crashed halfway through so not sure what's there.

Things have been pretty quiet and we haven't seen anyone at Chez Eno since the guy my companion took out- but I do have a teddy bear with a beer in it sitting among a bunch of pumpkins near the greenhouse as kind of a friendly gesture to passers-by.

I saw in another thread how you can "toss" items that were in hand so that you didn't lose them but I might have misunderstood. I found a second fire axe that I was going to bring back with me for my companion or ZH and when I tossed it it just disappeared. The server reset and when I came back in the axe was there! Okay then... so now I know that works. If you lose gear then just log and it should be there.

I did manage to get the fire lit and noticed one nice thing is that the fireplace is persistent so it was there along with my cooking tripod when the server reset. That's nice! I don't need to keep re-making the fireplace kit but as you have mentioned before you do need to keep fuel in it. I haven't tried cooking anything yet but it sounds like it is well and truly glitched- not a huge deal since I can't find a cooking pot anyway. If I mined a large stone- do those act as cooking surfaces?

Today I went full leather  :-)

So I worked out that you can stack up to 7 pieces on tanned leather and then, when you drag the sewing kit onto the stack of tanned leather you get more options to create items - the previous options I saw was because I only had 4 tanned leather.  With 5 or more you get two additional options, the leather sack and the leather jacket (at 5 pieces each).

Leather_Crafting_zpsd56965fd.jpg

I duly crafted a leather sack and leather jacket to complete my leather look!

Leather_zps0c208899.jpg

Some things to note about going full leather!

Note that in the first screenshot I am using a taloon backpack - that's because the cow hide takes a whopping 15 slots in a 5x3 slot configuration and only the taloon, hunting and mountain backpacks can fit one - the drybag is too narrow.  Weirdly though, it only creates 3 tanned hides, whereas the smaller deer pelt (8 slots in a 4x2 config - and thus fitting inside every backpack except the improvised courier and leather courier backpacks) gives you 4 tanned leather.  If you skin a cow but don't have a taloon, hunting or mountain backpack then you'll need to carry the hide in your hands!

Big hides!

Leather_Pelts_zps5496c4c9.jpg

For each piece of tanned leather you will get from a hide or pelt you need 10% of a bag of lime - however you have to tan all or nothing and if the bag of lime doesn't have enough to do the whole job you cannot use it.  So if you have a deer pelt (4 tanned leather) and a 30% bag of lime you cannot tan the pelt.  However, you could use the same bag of lime to tan a cow hide (3 tanned leather).  Nor can you combine bags of lime to consolidate the contents, which is a bit annoying.

To make a full set of leather gear, including a leather sack, you need 20 pieces of tanned leather - so that's 5 deer or 7 cows, or any combination of the 2 that totals 20.  You'll need 2 full bags of lime, if not more depending on how you use them (e.g. using a bag on 2 deer pelt will us 80% of the bag, leaving 20% left - which you effectively cannot use.)  For maximum efficiency, I used a bag of lime to tan a deer pelt, then 2 cow pelts (40%+30%+30%) to get 10 tanned leather and then repeated the process a second time for another 10 tanned leather.

To actually craft the items I think (not 100% sure) that 2 pristine leather sewing kits will be needed.  I had one pristine and two damaged ones which was just sufficient I think.

The leather pants give you a disappointing 2 slots and the jacket 4.  The total inventory space for full natural leather load out is 40 slots.

Summary - you need 2 deer, 4 cows, 2 full bags of lime & 2 pristine sewing kits to go full leather with the maximum efficiency.  I managed to do this in probably about 4 hours of play all within the area covered by Dubrovka to the North, Berezino to the East, Polana to the South and Gorka to the West.

Final point - the in-game item descriptions for the Natural Leather Hat, Natural Leather Pants and Natural Leather Moccasins are all completely wrong!

I hope this was useful to someone!

Left some teddy bears stuffed with paper notes for people in the north west towns... Mostly poetry about dying and being lost. This is going to be my new quest. To bring enlightenment through the written word.. I hope someone finds one one day :)

My first two HC characters on 0.53 died. First, I had problems with handling the cooking pot and finally decided to eat a raw steak (it doesn't say 'raw' now), which turned out to be a bad idea. I wasn't energized and hydrated so I was probably going to die. I planted some pumpkins, found a goat and killed it. Skinning failed numerous times ('cancel current action'), while my screen was getting more and more B&W and panic started to set in. Then I got shot, almost killed... I didn't even see the shooter and I'm surprised he missed at an immobile target. Nevertheless, got me bleeding dry. I managed to run away, but being 'sick' and not energized, I was doomed to die. I put my repeater in my mouth and said goodbye to this cruel world.

My second HC character spawned near a big island, I thought it's the new prison so I swam there immediately, fresh as a bambi... Turned out it was the Skalisty Island, and thoroughly looted to that. I decided not to give up on my character and even started to pick berries, but all of them were blue. At that point I was hungry, thirsty and super cold. Running made me warm up but also waste precious energy, Sitting and picking berries promised some food but I was cooling off. For Christ's sake, Dayz. After some time I decided to swim back to the coast. More bushes, more blue berries, not even an apple tree. When I started to die of starvation, I decided to eat some blue berries and immediately contracted food poisoning. *sigh* Nothing could have saved me at that moment, so I decided to drown myself to see the messages and animation. About a minute of waiting, 3 big gulps and you're dead...

The next character did his best to stay alive from the very start. I started farming operations in Nizhnoye and picked some apples while waiting for it. Then I moved to Berezino, which was empty (it was late night at my place). I decided to go full leather like krazypenguin above. 7 cows, 2 limes and 2 sewing kits later, I'm dressed in a pinkish leather... I hope they'll add the painting option soon. The 10-slot vest is a nice surprise, the 2-slot pants not so. Then I decided to drop my gun and go full natural with the bow. Now I'm super well-fed, equipped and ready to explore all the new locations they added. Cool!
