Why does 'feeling the pulse' reveal the name?

Recommended Posts

Why does feeling the pulse of an unconscious player or other actions reveal the name of that person? Shouldn't the feedback message of your action just be something like "I feel a weak pulse"?

I usually check  the femoral artery.  It's only right we should be on first names terms for that sort of thing.

The questions is a philospohical one.

If you feel someones puls in real life you allready made a Connection. It tells you if the Person is dead or "good to go". You might even find yourself compelled to know more about this Person and their pulse.

Pulsating isent it.

Somehow it's like an MMORPG name suddenly popping up over the head (in this realistic and 'informationless' game/world).

And no. It's not a game breaker for me. I still consider it to be playable.

Irl we would be able to identify ppl, if we get to see them close enough. Feeling the pulse is close enough. If you do it again some time later and see the same name, then you would also have realised that it's the same person irl, you get the name ingame and therefore know it's the same person.

I think that was the explanation I heard some time ago, don't ask me where though. It's authenticity, who get's so close to someone should be able to identify the person.

so if all the toons look alike and there are two bandits and one friend of yours on the ground all pretty close together how do you how do you know whose pulse you have just checked if the game doesn't tell you?

maybe they should restrict the ability to perform any actions on another avatar that is awake, free, and healthy without their consent. you could of course do whatever you like to the dead, restrained, or surrendered. of course this excludes basic combat actions such as shooting, stabbing, or beating someone into submission or death.

I'm not sure there is going to be a need for things like ID's, wallets, or credit cards during the zombie apocalypse. :P

I agree that checking pulse shouldn't display the characters in-game name.

Our names really are just names that the government can document & regulate to know who it is they're keeping tabs on.

Yes I know that people require names simply to socialize on a day to day basis, but in a post-apocalyptic world, the name that you had before society crumbled is now meaningless.

The name recognition is a substitute for being able to identify a face. Realistically, If you get close enough to take someone's pulse twice, you're going to recognize its the same person, or that person you've been traveling with all day. In real life, you could look at their face and know, in the game they have to give you the name to since you could look at the same in game face all day and not be sure its the same person.

Also,  its not too far of a stretch to assume everyone is carrying their wallet with the id still in it and pictures of their dead family.

What I am actually aiming at is, when you feel the pulse of a person whose name you don't or can't know (sudden KOS or whatever, but that's not the point here), why is that unknown name revealed by checking the pulse?

Domino25 above me said that it might be a substitute for facial identification. But then names should also pop up over heads of players that you've seen before when you see their face within a certain range.

Sure, names in DayZ have not the faintest meaning since they are not woven into your character like in a MMORPG and can be changed unlimited and each time before entering a server. I'm just commenting a little detail.

A name should be displayed when we get to within 50 feet of another player. The whole "realism" argument is mute considering all of the unrealistic bits in the game.

Nonononononononono, do you know how often ppl litterally run over you, when you are lying in a tree, sitting in a bush,... . That would be a game breaker.

Everybody I check is named 'Unknown Entity'

not sure if metaphor for anonymity or rage quitter...

The player died/fell unconscious and already has pressed respawn before you checked. There have already been suggestions to keep the name on dead bodies, even after they respawned or quit.

You make a good point there, didn't think of that at the time. Okay, how about once you are detected? I see no harm after that.

I don't understand exactly how the game should know that you were detected. What if you try to hide after that and the name follows you while you try to run through trees and take a sharp turn to the left? It literaly happens that ppl have you in their scope and don't spot you.

I think I remember Dean talking in a stream about how you might get a message like "you know that guy", "seems familiar", or something when you interact with ppl you interacted with earlier, but they were just throwing ideas, I think. We will see, what we will get, I guess, but I am somewhat scared or names floating over heads and letting the system decide just when it doesn't matter. Really reminds me of Battlefield and it helps following ppl you want to kill after spotting them.

You insinuate sir, that a dead person is not 'good to go'?... I reject this claim.

Frequent crouching and standing to follow.

Well, I definitely don't want names following us around, that's for sure. I'm talking about some form of limited interaction, you know, once you've actually seen someone. If you've got someone in the sites of your rifle that's another story. A name should definitely not appear over your head or follow you. That would be terrible.
