Ballistic Vest - What Should It Do?

Recommended Posts

So first off... /hnnnnngh

HYQwplX.jpg?1

We've known about the ballistic vest from the various leaks and game files for a while now. But this is the first time I personally have seen it rendered in-game as an inventory item.

This could, in addition to things like the incoming SPOSN/SMERSH setup (to a certain extent), lead to a change in modularity of chest rigs. Or, it could just be a status-quo type of thing with each vest/rig being treated as one distinct entity.

However, would you like to see some sort of variance with these?

Now that they've added slots for hats (fishing hooks, rad) and boots (knife slots, also rad) I think it might be a good time to add some other forms of "modular" clothing.

I would personally support the addition of looted pockets/pouches/holsters (there's a different "vest holster" in the game files as well, which I assume is some sort of crossdraw) as separately looted items. And also, it would be cool if we could find differently rated plate inserts. So that there'd be a bit of an "unknown" when you see someone with a ballistic vest. Who knows? They could have nothing more than cloth and tissue paper between them and their vital organs. Or, conversely, they could have a SAPI plate underneath which is capable of vaporizing your puny pistol rounds.

That and it could, in addition to the anti-stab and press vests we've got now, allow the developers to modulate how the player behaves when hit. So, I'd imagine (never been shot myself, very thankful for that) that getting shot with a plate carrier wouldn't be something to ignore.

What do you think?

I think you think too much.

However, your posts entertain me and make me think.

You bastard.

I think there's enough military gear in this game. Is it call of duty or dayz?

Go play army man somewhere else

Yes, a modular system would be nice, exchangeable plates ( also for MILL backpacks ) wich reinforce but also have to be changed after beign damaged would be great.

more concealed carry options are a must as much as more holster options. This could/should be craft able.

Id also like to be able to spray paint the vests and spray stencils on them :D

To me the Ballistic Vest should provide the same level of protection as the Helmet does, it should diminish damage from guns such as 9mm/.45/357/22 and M4A1 but only to a certain extent, guns like the SKS/AKM/Mosin/Blaze should render the target unconscious from the first shot, and nothing past that. Since the helmet only provides protection from the initial head shot and that's if your not shot in the face hole, lol...

I also hope in the future they add different colors and patterns to the current gear.

see my main issue is on realism.

We know there were military troops in the area - so there should be ballistic vests with inserts available.  Heck, you should be able to take them off zombie soldiers if you kill them via headshot.  (and would make zombie soldiers a bigger threat as well.)  The Interceptor vest for example, (which would be found in helicopter crash sites at the least) is rated to take 1 7.62 round at the very least, with the operator unharmed beyond bruising.  And civilian ballistic plates, though rare, would be in the hands of some preppers, as well as individual soldiers - and many commercialy available models worldwide offer greater protection than the interceptor.

So... yeah.

But a soft vest on it's own, without any inserts?  We're looking at probably type II or type IIIA protection values.  Also soft vests can handle a lot more rounds than a plate can, so we're looking at multiple round protection against most hand gun munitions, and -maybe- reduced damage from 5.56.

Also given this is europe, civilians can own vests of up to type III freely, though rare they should have a chance of being around.  Police might have type IV vests.

The ballistic vest should have no storage capacity, just like the anti-stab vest. If you want storage, get a vest. If you want ballistic protection, you need to sacrifice storage for protection.

The ballistic vest should REDUCE damage, and should prevent bleeding from hits until it is ruined. However, i dont think it should be able to sustain more than 2 direct hits before its unusable. I think it should be mainly for those times when you are running through a field or town and a sniper takes a pot shot at you. Gives you time to get away or duck and cover. You'll still take a lot of shock damage, and potentially knocked unconscious, but you wont die.

Would be nice if it could be given the option to conceal it beneath clothing

I'm hesitant to agree with this for two reasons.

1. It can come standard without storage options (similar to the way the M4A1 comes standard without attachments) as to be something that has to be gradually pieced together. So that when you loot it in the first place, it's on-par with things like the press vest. But it is unique in that it has the capability to become better via the looting of attachable pockets and the like, pending the devotion of some additional time/energy/risk.

2. It depends on later revelations, but if this is supposed to be the "high-end" vest... why shouldn't it be a hybrid of protection/storage? Whilst the other, more common, vests are made to focus on one or the other. If it's supposed to be a "high-end" item then it should be advantageous, not just a cooler looking press vest.

Very well said lol.

The level of protection is debatable and best left for the experts here to discuss.(of which I am not one on mil gear/weaps by any stretch)

As far as Storage: Web Gear makes the most sense.

Slots for (limited) Ammunition/Clips, Canteen and possibly a sidearm holster - also - IFAK maybe? Dunno if the rest of the World's Mil Orgs have IFAKs or anything similar or if this game will ever have anything like it. But just tossing out Web Gear because it makes the most sense and is fairly standard.

Cheers.

Should only offer some limited form of protection against small-arms fire like it says in the text.
Maybe only be able to carry magazines.

Dunno. Don't really care for the military stuff. I hope at some point you'll want to get rid of all the heavy military stuff so you can run from the massive amount of zombies chasing you.

Actually plate carriers like these not only provide protection by insertable armor plates they are also highly modular. Mine has a 2l hydration pouch on the back, a coms pouch 3 dubble m4 mag pouches, a admin pouch, 2 pistol mag pouches and a holster strapped to it. Plus a dump pouch for empty mags,

They kinda look like this then...

I think they should not make you look pregnant like the other vests in this game

Meh the whole attachable pockets thing is cool and everything, but I'm all about balance > realism. I would rather someone make the choice to have one or the other based on their needs, rather than everyone eventually just running around with them simply because they have modded it with "attachable pockets". However, you do agree with me on one point without quesiton, that the ballistic vest should definitely come with no storage capacity.

If it must be that way, I can be fine with the whole "add-on" thing for the vest. But I would prefer they be RIDICULOUSLY rare.

I want bum-packs damnit!  This is Eastern Europe, and god knows they're at least 40 years behind everyone else's fashion sense.

More importantly, should items like the ballistic vest be controlled by the central hive's loot economy? Because if it is not, half of the players looking for pvp on any high pop server will be wearing one.

It's the same stats as the press vest, another plate carrier.

The vest should tire the hell out of you.

But drink Rasputin beer, and get energized.  Sure...

durp ? Why should wearing a vest tire you out faster...? Also Its not beer per se..its what you call root beer :)

Because a vest with a full set of plates can go anywhere from 30 to 50 lbs alone, depending on manufacturer and model.  The lighter gear is also going to be more rare. Does that make more sense?

Interesting on the rootbeer part.  I always assumed it was beer.

I see. I hope the stamina system will be that elaborate. Taking into account everything and where it is stored would also be nice.

Sadly tho its not beer :( BUT i think dean stated they want drugs/alcohol in so we might all get a nice buzz in game too :D
