DayZ is far more optimized than you think tbh...

I started playing Arma3 again (haven't played since Alpha/Beta) and wow... Comparing to that game, DayZ is 100% optimized. I was actually surprised, having read that multiple improvements have been implemented in A3 but the FPS doesn't seem to have increased for me at all.

 

I have even played bit of DayZero recently and even on the most optimized mod of them all - i.e no grass land - I have been dropping frames like crazy.

 

Right now there aren't many zombies in DayZ but I think that even once those are added we can enjoy higher FPS than all of the other RV games.

 

If there was a single player DayZ Stand Alone version I am 100% confident everyone would get steady 60 FPS. Most of the FPS lag is due to the server and not you rig. For example, on Arma 3 I can get steady 60 fps maxed out in single-player, but online I get between 25-40.

 

BTW my specs aren't super top end:

i5 4670k @stock

GTX 770 2GB

4GB RAM

 

None of these games are install on SSD.

Why dus the online modus affect your FPS? As FPS shouldn't be related to your internet connection or anything like that :huh: ?

I get 90ish frames per second in ARMA 3 single player, 60ish online.

In DayZ Standalone I drop down to 25ish frames per second in cities, 60-100 everywhere else.

I've grown to accept the fact that Bohemia couldn't optimize their morning coffee.

I can confirm this and can't wait to see the new fixed zombie pathfinding with the nav-mesh and then increasing their numbers.

Currently I feel sorry for that lonely single village zombie and want to make it my fwiend.

It's not to do with the connection but with the server itself. I have no idea how it works, but I know that if you are playing on a "bad" server, you'll get even less FPS.

 

I do drop in cities, but I don't drop to anything crazy like I do in Arma 3.

It's kinda true that Arma 3 is badly optimized, but doesn't DayZ run on an older and less requiring version of RV engine? If it runs better than Arma 3 it doesn't mean that it's optimized, as real client-side optimizations haven't been done yet, really.

I'd guess that with tons of people in the server it probably just gets slow at relaying data back to you since it has to transmit it all to 39 other people, every tree sway, bullet fired, person running, zombie running.

 

It's why Battlefield 4 for instance is such a mess as a match goes on, conquest for example. 64 people all constantly shooting hundreds of bullets, thousands of calculations per minute as well as every other detail and after a while it just starts dying.

And a conquest match in BF usually lasts 30 mins to an hour.

 

DayZ servers have to handle an even larger landscape for hours and a lot of people.

 

 

64 bit servers should fix this, most likely anyway.

I reckon they'll handle 40 people just fine but when it starts hitting 100 they might go down to what we currently experience.

I personally don't find DayZ SA to be too bad, even if i play on my laptop with an ATI HD4330 and i5, i seem to get 30fps stable everywhere, with some buffering whilst cities fully load, don't get me wrong, it doesn't look pretty but its playable and smooth!

Its definitely a world away from trying to run Doom on a 386sx, o figure people just complain on the optimization because they simply like to moan or they're from a console environment where there's a standard to benchmark against, rather than a wide range of hardware to cause issues.

In Arma III (or any of the Arma games for that matter) your client FPS depends entirely on the server setup, server FPS and the mission running.

Thats why people get so different results when they play online.

Two servers running the same mission can vary greatly in FPS, because as soon as the server FPS start dropping, every single client connected will feel it.

 

@OP

DayZ has yet to recieve some actual optimization and comparing it to Arma III, is a bad comparison tbh.

One of the reasons you cant compare it, is that people are hosting Arma III server from home, from rented server boxes and from "server instances" (what we have in DayZ) so you never know the hardware behind the server and your experience will vary greatly.

One of the other reasons its a bad comparison, is the many changes they have made to DayZ, to force it to handle "in-game updates" in a very different way. In Arma, everything is transmitted to every single player on the server, no matter where you are. This means you will recieve information from the server about a person shooting another person, up to 20km away, regardless of you wanting it or not. This does not happen in DayZ, because they created the network bubble.

This is the reason you can get 100+ FPS in singleplayer and a completely random FPS in multiplayer, in Arma III.

 

Thats also the reason they dont want to call the engine powering DayZ, Real Virtuality, because it has become a whole other beast, workinig in a very different way.

BI has been trying to fix the online FPS in Arma III for some time, but with the latest server.exe it has actually gotten worse with big missions.

I know this because ive been playing Arma in milsim communities for some years now and ive created alot of different missions for Arma over the years.

 

As mentioned in the thread by Powerhouse, we have yet to see actual client side optimization for DayZ, they have been focussing completely on the server architecture, so in a way the server is better optimized, but the client is about the same.

As far as ARMA III is concerned:

I am doing a little bit of work on it and it's not really working out for me all that well. I have a pretty powerful AMD-based system with 6 CPU-cores - but ARMA III doesn't particularly like that. Leaving me with two choices: not doing any work on ARMA III or upgrading my system.

 

It's a sad story, really. But I have the feeling, as if DayZ and the performance is laid out to be more mainstream, while ARMA III really doesn't care. It's just there. And the current state it's in is already faaaarfaaaar better than it used to be.

I have had ARMA III since the very first day of the Alpha-Release and at the time it was completely unplayable. Anyone with FPS over 5 or 10 was a really lucky guy. Especially on Multiplayer-environment.

Also the optimization while amazing definitely still needs some work. I gotta hand it to the Development team you guys have made some amazing strides so far!

Performance is relatively good in Dayz.

 

Problem is the people who try to play the game on potatoes expecting it to run fine.

The game is definitely in better shape than when it started, but it's about as optimized as tits on a fish.

Yup , The engine does not reward a high end PC.

 

Ive got an R9 290x

 

16g Ram

 

i7 4k Oc

 

 

Day z now getting 50FPS and in some cities 25FPS.

 

however Dayz standalone seems a lot more stable at 25 compared to A3 which leads me to believe it may be a server drop in FPS

 

but i totally agree with you the optimization in either game is way off.

 

And the worse thing the more content that goes into the standalone the worse the FPS will be

If they manage to do client optimalisation, then I belive it will be quite on contrary.

Also let's not forget, that Rocket is not old time employee of Bohemia, so he might in fact care about optimalisation for client !

 

Anyway I can't wait for those promised optimalisations since I hate having 20-25 FPS in certain towns.

Also  I don't consider i7-4770K,8GB DDR3 and Radeon HR7870 2GB, DayZ SA on SSD to be a potato...
