Hetstaine 10852 Posted May 28, 2014 We nailed four with the shottie on a killing spree two nights ago on exp, two with the standard and two with the sawn off. All within ten or so metres. Devastating . One shot deaths and all ruined gear. ymmv .
gorvi 189 Posted May 28, 2014 You shot at someone 3 meters with the sights zero'ed to 100m? No wonder why you missed. I have no problem killing players with the shotgun.
Jvalor 59 Posted May 28, 2014 (edited) I've only had two player encounters while carrying a shotgun so far. The first one I was in a corner pub, top floor and was running down the hallway with the windows to my right and I stopped and saw a guy crouch-walking against a fence across the street. I pulled out my shotgun and took aim and fired one shot. He dropped unconcious and I watched him bleed out and die. The second I had just found a shotgun and then a handsaw in the next house so I sawed off the shotgun and turned it into a sawed-off. Then I ran up into the building that has stairs as soon as you enter. I was upstairs looting and heard someone coming up the stairs so I turned around and he was already staring at me. He also has a shotgun, not sawed-off. He was already aiming in on me as I was pulling out my sawed-off and he shot me twice and then he took off running when he saw I had a shotgun as well. He was running down the stairs and I shot him twice in the back. Not point blank, but he was at the bottom of the steps and I was nearly on the halfway point of the steps. After that engagement, I ran back inside the room up top to reload, but apparently when he shot me my ammo was ruined so I couldn't reload. So I closed the door and pulled out my axe. I heard him reloading as well. We were both bleeding, but no fractures. He came back up the steps and I charged around the corner just in time to hit him once with my axe and he dropped. I heard his shotgun fire right as I hit him, but I didn't get hit. Sooo...yeah, it was kind of bad. Edited May 28, 2014 by Jvalor
flygamer1 176 Posted May 28, 2014 Since all weapons have unrealistic accuracy and feel to them, yes.
pacpac 22 Posted May 29, 2014 i think the shotgun should stay as "useless" as it is. it is good as a starter gun and a back up. the dispersion needs to be fixed for pellets as well as hit detection/range. hopefully a "better shotgun" will be added. something like this maybe? dinosaurlegs 42 Posted May 29, 2014 I sniped a guy who had an M4 with my shotgun. It was a one shot kill, and quite glorious I might add. Right before I shoot my shotgun I scream in a redneck voice "Yah keesed me seester!!!" .. Makes the shotgun do more damage.
Jvalor 59 Posted May 29, 2014 Right before I shoot my shotgun I scream in a redneck voice "Yah keesed me seester!!!" .. Makes the shotgun do more damage. If you run out of a cabin in your underwear, with a shotgun and yell, "Git out of here, git!" or "We got anoth'r one, Cleetus!" you get a x100 damage increase buff on your next shot that lasts for 15 minutes.
Whyherro123 2283 Posted May 29, 2014 In reality, the double-barrel shotgun should probably be one of the more effective weapons in the situations in is designed for. -few moving parts; can't jam, easy to fix-common ammunition; 12 gauge buckshot will fuck someone up within 100 or so meters, depending on the load.A shotgun is actually rather effective out to pretty good range, the spread is not nearly as wide as the game makes it out to be.-versatility; can load a stupidly high variance of round types; birdshot (for small game), buckshot (for large game/self defense), slugs (for self defense/large game/ killing what you need dead), flares, wax slugs (an interesting "imprompu" round that fucks up what it hits, worthwhile for adding to the game to increase the value of the shotgun == find some buckshot, want some slugs? melt down some wax, pour it in and let it settle (obviously, it is more involved in real life) Now you have some slugs (that should have lower range than actual slugs)) etcA pump-action shotgun would have many of the same benefits, but they have too many moving parts to be a true "survival" weapon.
hotcakes 348 Posted May 29, 2014 Based slug ammunition is going to make the shotugun relevant. It has a HUGE multiplier on the base damage, see the hit variable. class B_12Gauge_Pellets : ShotgunBase {hit = 6;indirectHit = 0;indirectHitRange = 0;cartridge = "FxCartridge_12Pellet";cost = 5;typicalSpeed = 404;visibleFire = 18; // how much is visible when this weapon is firedaudibleFire = 18;airFriction = -0.00096;caliber = 0.5;}; class B_12Gauge_Slug : BulletBase {hit = 11;indirectHit = 0;indirectHitRange = 0;cartridge = "FxCartridge_12Slug";cost = 5;typicalSpeed = 400;visibleFire = 18; // how much is visible when this weapon is firedaudibleFire = 18;airFriction = -0.005;caliber = 0.5;};
gannon46 788 Posted May 29, 2014 did you empty both barrels or just one? if all his gear was pristine he was healthy and he had a lot of stuff like mags in that vest it supposedly defends against some of the damage. I've killed folk with the sawn off before but I emptied both barrels and of course it ruined everything the spread was insane. they shouldn't scrap it and balancing/tweeking of the firearms is still in progress.and just because a gun doesn't work for you someone else might be a boss with it. Bororm 1156 Posted May 29, 2014 I use the shotgun a lot, it's finicky but it's not useless. You're either going to basically out right kill a guy or else unfortunately tickle him currently. I wouldn't use it past about 20-25m though, some times you can get lucky past that but usually not. I shot a guy at 40 the other day, one shot him, but that's not the norm. CrashBoomK 12 Posted May 29, 2014 Really you have to start thinking here about what type of projectile your firing and it's ability to penetrate things. So yes shooting someone in full gear with something that will absorb damage or save their life in their vest and Jacket Pockets is highly probable. Plus you have to consider the randomness of the pellet spread in addition to that. While some people may fire a spread and get lucky that one of the pellets tags someone right in the eye of the face and kills them in one shot or causes a knockout others may experience where the majority of the pellets fly out to the sides. Not to mention people tend to not specify if they are firing both barrels or just single when killing people. Really to conduct conclusive weapons testing we need a separate hive with some fully loaded dummy servers that basically have every item spawned multiple times with 1 hour reset so people could gear up try different configurations of shooting things at each other with different ranges marked out on the ground.to get a really good feel for just how crazy the stuff is. A shooting range to help measure dispersion or practice shooting as well would be nice. While the hard numbers datamined are important I think seeing how it actually affects things in game is equally important. Plus a few non aggressive respawning zombies would be great for this as well. Not to mention this would make it easier to find some of the bugs with particular items of equipment or crafting recipie issues as well since you could actually attempt it multiple times rather than just once after having to search the whole world.
St. Jimmy 1631 Posted May 29, 2014 Far from useless. Just need to shoot close.
agentneo 337 Posted May 29, 2014 I really like the shotgun..I think it has a super wide spread especially on sawn off so best to use point blank. I made a couple of kills with it and I like keeping one in the backpack. Awesome gun. Maybe spread needs tightening slightly, but all the guns need the random deviation fixing
agentneo 337 Posted May 29, 2014 A shooting range to help measure dispersion or practice shooting as well would be nice. This would be good i think there should be a single player / local co-op training mode which writes the basics on screen and lets you practise offline. It gives people a chance to still play when their offline or away from connection, helps noobs to learn the game, and gives you somethin fun to try with your friends when you dont want to go on the deathmatch servers. Its also not really anything new or difficult to code? The other Arma games allow this and its a real let down for me not been able to host up a local or private single player version.
Wexoch 6 Posted May 29, 2014 I was firing 1 barrel at once as the story suggests. Gear with stuff in it blocks less damage than gear without stuff in it, this has been extensively tested. Anyways if gear absorbs shotgun rounds that easily than I am right: the shotgun is useless. If I would've used the mosin as a shotgun on close range in this situation I would've had 100% better results.
DemonGroover 8836 Posted May 29, 2014 I am always on the lookout for a shotgun (to saw off) to add to my backpack. I find them excellent for close range encounters and i more often than not get the shottie out when entering a building.
mustamakkara 5 Posted May 29, 2014 NEVER use sawed off shotgun unless in some real CQC, but the shotgun itself is pretty OP weapon in my opinion, it's always been almost 1 hit kill weapon around 50-100m.
DeadmanBobby 0 Posted May 29, 2014 I was a pretty fresh spawn when me and another freshie linked up. We came into a town and found another dude getting harassed by a fourth so we decided to help him. I had a shotgun, the fourth guy had one too and shot at me (fractured my arm, no bleeding so I'm thinking sweet!) I run in for the kill (knowing I have a shotgun so lets do this up close) unbeknownst to me, my other freshie buddy has gone around behind him, bad guy has somehow slipped away so I come around the corner face-to-face with my new friend, My shotgun barrel is touching his face, surprised, I pull the trigger, friend goes down for the count. Long story short....shotgun at point blank range to the face is a sure thing ;) Sorry BOOTY LASHER, i put the hair trigger upgrade on the shotgun so it went off pretty easily. inphared 33 Posted May 29, 2014 Totally disagree with you. The sawed off is my go-to weapon when going inside buildings, so good.
SpiRiTuS T16 10 Posted May 29, 2014 My experience with the sawn off has been alright, some kills some deaths, some complete disasters. My full length barrel shotty experiences have been pretty darn good. I guess its the luck of the spread more than anything when it comes to targets more than 10-20m away, at least thats how i feel about the gun. Overall i'd rather have it as a nice close combat gun that, for me at least, will kill quickly if not instantly. Sawn off for me is less favourable as spread = unreliability even at closer ranges. Prefer a pistol to sawn off. Prefer a full barrel shotty to an m4. Swings and roundabouts.
falcon1439 20 Posted May 29, 2014 It seems to actually be alright for me, I've killed many people with the shotgun. However, clothes do affect how much damage a player takes. I've taken a blaze unloaded on me at point blank range in the chest, but because I had an assault vest with ammo cases in it, I didn't even end up bleeding. LigerRider 82 Posted May 29, 2014 Non-sawn off shotgun is great. I once felt extra psychopath like, grabbed a shotgun as a fresh spawn and walked down from Berezino to Three Valleys with my shotgun slaughtering everything that moved. My only problem was with one person, was quite a ways away though, I didn't expect to hit him but I shot anyways, blood. Shot again, more blood. Reloaded, shot once more and he dropped, so I walked up on him as he turned around prone and aimed a mosin at me. I slowly reloaded my shotgun as the clicks of his empty mosin came, and BAM. No survivors that day.
maninthewall 470 Posted June 1, 2014 (edited) I was just chillin on the experimental servers, looting the town with no name (South of Novo), I was in the Piano house when I heard footsteps from above, so obviously someone is there. I try with the old "Hello, I'm friendly downstairs". No response.I peek the stairs and see this guy shutting the door, while having my shotgun in hands I try to further communicate with him, but still no response. I heard him loading a weapon and I see him heading downstairs towards me. I back off and take position, I see him rushing downstairs. I pull off my two shotgun shell on him, both hit him. The range was about 3 meters. As I thought he was dead, I see the person just standing there, I didnt reload my weapon since I thought he was dead, as he obviously should have been from that range. But he turns around and shoots me in the foot! I quickly head outside and run around the building, he's still inside so I pull off two more shells into him as he was standing still, bandaging. This obviously hit him, and the range was about 5 meters. But he's still up! So I take cover, reload and pull off two more shells into his poor body and it looks like he broke his legs. I go around the building again to quickly bandage, theres no way he survived this. When I check the building, he's gone, nothing's there. Did he combat log? Why did he not die? Is the shotgun really that bad? FYI: The shotgun was not sawed off Edited June 1, 2014 by ManInTheWall
