Nighttime in this game is horrible

Recommended Posts

Seriously, its not even realistic, you just turn of all the light.

Where on earth do you find such pitch black nights when you stay in open fields?

Even when you are in an area with no artifical lights around, you have the moon, you have stars... makes me wonder if the guys who made it ever went out at night.

Yes there is less light but there is no no light at all...

Nights in DayZ feel like you went into a deep cave or someone just threw a blanket over you...

Yeah, I agree.

Plus, I can't really come up with a reason why someone would move around at night at all. Humans are diurnal creatures. Sleep, eat, or maintain gear during the darkness. Running around at night without knowing the terrain is asking for a broken leg/ankle.

You got those pitch black nights everywhere with no civilisation around (cities create some kind of ambient light that makes the night less dark around them) and weak moonlight (the African savanna provides a pretty good example).

As its after the zombie apocalypse there are no cities to create light. Arguably you should have more moonlight just to see a little better and maybe a wider cone on your flashlight or head torch.

Hello there

The "night" is still being worked on dont worry.

As to being active at night, its easier to sneak past other humans. Its worth the risk.

Maybe you could deactivate night until its finished, cause right now the only option at night is to log on another server that has no nighttime.

I see what you try to do with night, but right now, you cant even see whats in your way at night when you cant move on when you dont have a flashlight on.

I honestly love the night in DayZ. I live up north in the woods, and when there's no moon out, it's pitch black. It's the most accurate night in video games for me. You see too much in other games, like you have cat's eyes or bionic eyesight.

The only thing I truly hate is the gamma and brightness exploit. Wish this was fixed. (Asking too much , I Know. It's been like that since ArmA2/DayZ mod long, long ago...)

(Took this screenshot a while ago. Lovin' it.)

And now with camp fires, it's awesome. B)

Well, you got flashlights, weapon flashlights for the M4 and the pistols, gas lamps, flares, and finally, the "low HDR, brightness and gamma cranked up" exploit to see at night. The later lets you see in black and white, but clearly. I hate that exploit, but if it suits you, then try it and see! (literally, at night that is... ;) )

Just that flashlights basicly make you a big neon sign for every Sniper...

I'll use my old anecdote... I have trouble telling whether my monitor is on or off at night in DayZ.

It is being, and needs to be, worked on. So, we'll see what happens when they replace the renderer and work with the HDR.

The point is, a healthy human can at least see a bit at night, at least silouettes.

In DayZ, you basicly turn blind at night. I could as well turn my monitor off and I would see just as much.

I am happy that its worked on, but until then, night is unplayable. You see it alone on the fact that once night hits, even a full populated 40 man server suddendly drops to 3 or 4 players.

Hello there

The Gamma Exploit is "unfixable"

There are some things that can be done to alleviate the issue but if someones wants to turn it up they will.

What needs to be done, and is (will be) underway, is to make night pretty and useful enough for people not to want to Gamma up.

In A2 single player, I did Gamma UP but in A3 due to the lovely night I dont.

It wont stop everyone but it will deter many.

I live 20 miles from the nearest town and even on a over cast night with no moon and stars I can see.

The solution is to just not play at night time which is already overwhelmingly the norm...  It seems that many have already been broken to the notion that the problem is "unfixable" which means that any resemblence of "fair play" is and will continue to be out the window...  Orlock did mention that there are methods that can be taken to help mitigate this problem, however removing it all together will never be possible outside of heavily restricted lan parties.

The Gamma Exploit is "unfixable"

This is very disheartening to read and may be the final nail in whether I keep my server up.  No offence but this is actually kind of bullshit to those who pay good money to rent servers as this is a game breaking exploit and it's more of a slap in the face to know that Bohemia won't or can't fix it.

I think too many people are used to "tv or videogame night".  Basically where you can see as well at night as you can in the daytime, just everything has a blue tint to it.

I remember being at summer camp or rural areas or even the city where I live when it was blacked out by Hurricane Sandy.  With no moon, night is fucking BLACK.  Especially in a blacked out city where all you see are black silhouettes of buildings.

I light the black night of DayZ.  I mean if you could see at night, why would they have flightlights and road flares and chemlights?

I don't think you have seen true darkness when it's night time...I went to my grandfather's ranch FAR away from any civilization in Arizona and when it turned into night I couldn't see in front of me nor my hand (barely). AND not to mention that the moon and stars were out too, but I still couldn't see. So, yea you must have so badass supernatural eyes or something.

Raoul, I'd like to know where you live. I live in a town of less than 200 people out on the Alberta prairies. There is tons of light pollution even here. Street lights, drilling rig lights, those lights out on the front of a farmer's shop. But every once in a while you can get completely away from everything (not unlike the mass loss of electricity in DayZ), and you know what? Its bloody dark at night, especially if you are out in the woods. I've had times where I literally could not see my hand in front of my face.

Now that's not saying I disagree, I think night time could be much better coming from a gameplay standpoint. However I just have to disagree with your perception of night time.

You sure it is unfixable? The work done in Arma 3 concerning this seem to be rather effective as far as I understand it.

I have been in areas where there is no light.  But the stars and the moon.   Its lited up for me.  The people who says its pitch black.  Most likely had a flashlight and turn it off.  You have to let your nite vision kick in.  It takes a while.    The night is too dark.  If there is clouds its a different story but no clouds it show be little bit lighter cause of the starts and the moon

H1Z1 is doing night pretty good. Hope dayz takes a tip from them. I personally like the night how it is, but with the gamma self setting option, there's no point unless you adjust as well.
