Please, say NO to helicopters.

Recommended Posts

The vast majority of us have played the mod and know the joys and pains of having helicopters - broken window causing fuel to leak, main rotor parts being nowhere in sight when you needed them, the joy of fixing your first heli... Then taking to the skies to find every possible clan camp on the map...

Good times!

However, thanks to the mod I have experienced the potential benefits and downsides of helicopters and came to the conclusion that they should NOT be included in the stand alone.

My main gripe with helicopters is simple - whoever has one, controls the map.

Helicopters not only nullify distance, but also the threat of other players. When you're moving at 200 KPH, way in the clouds, you're not in any danger at all. Small arms fire barely tickles you when you're on the ground, in the air it's nigh on impossible to get hit.

This is a huge problem in my opinion, as it allows one group of players to have an immense advantage over everyone else. Players who die can be instantly picked up at the shore and dropped at the camp to re-gear in no time. At least when you're taking a car down to the shore, you're risking not only the vehicle but also your gear - is it really worth it risking your car just to pick someone else up?

Groups who control helicopters have supreme reign over the server and quite frankly destroy the server - trust me, finding camps in a heli is very easy, camps are the only thing holding groups to a server, so when the camp's gone, so are they.

Helis are basically too good. You can make them only have space for 2 players and my opinion would remain the same. All the other vehicles have serious disadvantages.

In my opinion the period of time when Helis were disabled but cars were about was some of the most fun I've had on DayZ. Searching for players and camps on foot with my squad, yes please!

Planes IMO could work, since they require a good bit of land to land and take off and if the 3rd person is disabled, it's very hard to see anything out of them.

Thoughts, opinions?

they should add heli but it should be hard to take care of it like maintenance and more fuel drain ? btw its too early to talk about helicopters imo

Helicopters are probably going to be added, whether you like it or not.

Why?

Because there are plenty of COD kiddies still whining about it, and by plenty, I mean hundreds of thousands of COD kiddies.

Besides, I rather enjoyed my time shooting people out of choppers in epoch, so I'm going to say YES to helicopters.

P.S - Gunfire barely tickles you on the ground and you're nigh invincible in the air? What kind of weed you been smoking? flying at 300 metres height I was shot down by a sniper in epoch for christ's sake, so that "fact" is wrong.

Seems legit.

What brought you to say that helicopters is something only CoD kiddies want? That actually doesn't make any sense and I doubt you have anything to support that.

First of all, didn't say it's a fact.

Lucky shots happen, just because ONCE you were shot out by either a lucky shot or aimbot (more likely), doesn't make my point null and void.

Hello there

IF helos are indeed added, do not expect them to behave as they did in the mod. The same with all vehicles.

Yes, having air power will be dominating, but don't expect to be able to get a bird in the air as easily or to have it immune from ground fire.

As to COD "whiners" having an impact on dev decisions, well thats just not how they work.

Go to the steam community page for stand alone, and search for the tons of forum posts talking about how helicopters should be implemented in poorly written grammar, then search the OPs profile, and look at his games.

I'm not going to fight here.

No. There was the AS50/Barret but they were very rare before duping glitch.

Neither stingers nor helis have place in the game.

The only helis in the game should be random heli crash sites - which by the way used to be farmed by groups in helis, causing a further imbalance.

what , who are you to say what has a place in the game or doesnt.

id be happy to see heli in game, as someone already said, its not going necessarily to be the same as the mod anyway, if it is included. if m4s have  place in a game, why dont stingers?

if heli is included, aa should be too, thats my view,

Yeeeeeahh uhhh...your post mirrored my first thought regarding this thread.  Maybe he means all the Battlefield kiddies.

Anyway for helicopters....hmmmm....you know I honestly can't give you an opinion on them.  I know I'd think they would be cool as there were many a time where I cruised over Cherno in a Helo when playing ArmA II,  and had fun, but yes I can see how OP this would be with having such a fast transport.  However we shall see and wait, like Orlok said, if they are added they will probably behave a lot differently than the mod, and I'm guessing they will be a bitch to pilot too.  Furthermore, IF (this being the key word) there ever comes a time where BI decides to do the entire country of Chernarus as a playable map helos will be a blessing.

Take a look at the full size of the country.  What we currently have is the South Zagoria region outlined in the red square.  Note Utes Island to the south.

I assure you this isn't a fight. I was just curious as to why you saw helicopters as something that primarily coD kiddies seem to support (and I was somewhat disappointed by helicopters being looked at in that way)

I agree, with a map that size, we could have a couple of helis, but also the servers would have to allow for over 300 players to fill this epic map.

indeed sir he is right anything that's not high powered and in the right spot will not fuck with a heli. atleast in the mod. i think though in SA its gonna be a bitch to make one let alone a vehicle atleast i hope(I'm thinking cherry picker). so i think they would be used more for recon and since they are kinda built buy us weapons will be kinda crappy.

Why does people still decide if a feature should or shouldn't be in game in terms of pvp balancing?? Helis give you a tremendous advantage? sure they do!. Camping inside the jail building makes it imposible for attackers to take you down? sure it does. Removing hiding body feature allows for people you shot to regear? more than probably. DMR gives a nonskilled sniper the chance to still kill you by just spaming bullets? totally. There are much better weapons than others? indeed.

But you know what guys?? this game isn't a competition and is not about pvp. You are not a badass for killing anything ingame and there's no record of your K/D, deathmatchs, headshot rate, accuracy rate and so on because it's just a side part of the game, not the main game. So what does or doesn't have to be ingame isn't based on pvp balance.

So, ignoring the pvp sides of this. Yes, helicopters have to be ingame. They have to be fewer and of high maintenance, plus difficult to pilot without forcing you to have a joystick (but for intance ToH starting engine protocol would be awesome. And no instant reaction when changing helix position).

I'm not particular keen on having helicopters in the game either. They seem too powerful and destroys the purpose of having a bare survival game. But it is difficult to say what they will be like until we have some sort of vehicles in the game to compare with regarding repairing, gathering of parts and vulnerability.

This game in it's present and past state has ALWAYS been about players interacting with each other and the environment is "just there". Helis bring a HUGE imbalance (imo) to the game.
