Powell (DayZ) 734 Posted April 20, 2014 I'm pretty sure every dayz player at one time or another, especially at night, has simply opened up their inventory and walked around, waiting for items to pop up in their vicinity tab, to loot. You pay no actual attention to your immediate surroundings and simply scan the room, letting your inventory do the looking for you. This is especially prevalent at night when you have no visibility and you can just walk around, picking up items at they appear as a large, obvious icon. This completely destroys the point of spreading loot into hard to reach places, making items really small (like batteries), and takes the whole "I'm using my eyes and hands to pick up things" away. It makes looting way too easy. More than once I have quickly skimmed a military tent, saw nothing, but suddenly a huge icon showing ammo pops up into my vicinity tab letting me know there's ammo on the ground - there is no way I would have seen that otherwise unless I actually took the time to look. blackberrygoo 1416 Posted April 20, 2014 I like the hardcore feel of that but it's kind of one of those things we need cuz we can't move and search as fluently as we could in real life , I mean when I'm on the ground prone I can't even crawl under stuff , in real life obviously you could . And for me I mostly use both (ill look around first and if I can't find anything or can't seem to reach something simply by pointing ill go vicinity ) or for when you're runnin through a hotspot real quick , it's nice to be able to scoop a weapon up that you see , as you could in real life , instead of just getting rocked by the dude chasing ya haha ..So in my opinion I say keep vicinity , I see where this could break realism for some but I think for the people who first try and look around , this is a great thing to have to pick up anything left behind .
Goove 70 Posted April 20, 2014 There are many more issues for them to fix besides "Vicinity". I dont see because the OP says they walk around with the tab button up that all players do...Point is moot and i highly doubt Dev is going to suggest this! Grapefruit hit the nail on the head, i never use vicinity until ive actually saw my loot and or when your friend is dropping stuff for you in the woods. monolith1985 109 Posted April 20, 2014 i never use the vicinity to find things, but i do like having it as i can move items to where i want them, or replace one thing in my inventory with something that is on groundits a good idea in theory, but i think practically it wouldnt suit
nexventor 429 Posted April 20, 2014 I am going to say I have to disagree and on two points. First using the vicinity technique is equivalent to "feeling" around with your hands, something you can do in real life but not in the game and the argument of well put your dot on the item is weak at best as it doesn't simulate a hasty search eg If I was doing a search, at night, in a zombie infested town I wouldn't be mucking around. I would be grabbing shit left right and centre and then sorting it when I was safer. The second point is the vicinity doesn't instantly appear anything in that area eg you still have to go prone to get it to work for stuff on the lower shelf or under a bed.
BeefBacon 1185 Posted April 21, 2014 I use vicinity to pick up items that I can't reach otherwise. Things like clothing on top of wardrobes and rifles under beds are extremely difficult or impossible to pick up normally. In these cases I use vicinity. It's also very helpful for organising inventory. If I don't have enough space it's easier to be able to replace items at will rather than dropping items and then manually picking them up again.
gannon46 788 Posted April 21, 2014 for one if night was actually decent maybe folks wouldn't do it. I've been in the woods with no flashlight in real life and can see pretty good once eyes get adjusted. just like in a building unless there are no windows or doors open you can see pretty good so until they fix the night time leave it alone. and there are other pressing matters to fix and that list is long. I shouldn't be forced to use a flashlight who in there right mind would turn a damn light on in a town full of killers and zeds its stupid. flash lights are a beacon saying here I am shoot me and are useless for survival. applejaxc 2500 Posted April 21, 2014 While I agree this makes it too easy, ArmA is too bad for picking up small items like batteries off of shelves without it for now.
colekern 1364 Posted April 21, 2014 No. I kind of see 'vicinity' as feeling around with your hands.
Zedertone 378 Posted April 21, 2014 As said above, I think of it as feeling with hands. The vicinity it picks up from isn't that big anyway, and if you're not even looking in the right direction it won't pop up.
AnyoneInCherno? 187 Posted April 21, 2014 Loot is too bugged really, its pretty much necessary at least at this point in development.
qww 287 Posted April 21, 2014 i dont ever use the method described by op, while i havent been playing much at night. the lack of mouse movement while tabbed and knowing that i could miss things by just replying on that, mean i would have to check more out of reach areas anyway visually, so thats what i do.if ive made teh effort to be in an area where i can find something i want, i wil just check it properly and also try and stay aware of surroundings
joe_mcentire 2074 Posted April 21, 2014 (edited) the problem i see here is that inventory/looting of the game very much seems to be build around that vicinity window. it is really a problem which i too pointed out way way back in the day. it truely undermines the whole scavenging aspect. The main problem i guess firstly is, that looting via point'n'click behaves totally different than via vicinity. at times you can only reach objects with your mouse that don't show up in your inventory and vice versa. this also relates to the used radii: narrow them down and adjust accordingly. so the first thing to do is basically balancing, so that there is more or less an equality in use. I think there may be some other possibilites such as:timers: loot just pops in after some x-(milli-)secondsdaytime/ambient light based: radii, distances and also timers could vary according to daytime or the ambient light available (to take flashlights into consideration e.g.)other than that, i don't see the vicinity window to lose its functionality, as there seems to much work and effort already spent to get rid of it entirely. Zer0HD2 (DayZ) 40 Posted April 21, 2014 When they fix loot sinking into certain surfaces, sure. Until then, it would be impossible to loot some areas, as you literally have to walk around with vicinity open to see if anything is there.
Insane Ruffles 74 Posted April 21, 2014 Vicinity is extremely important, even if the game wasn't buggy at all. Vicinity allows you to organize stuff on the ground before taking it, just like you would in real life. Looting in the Mod was kind of painful when going into a place with a lot of ammo or loot, and it was just a waste of time.
Wili 156 Posted April 22, 2014 The problem if they remove vicinity would be like in the mod where you were unable to pick items that are under a tree for example.
gaveroid 1 Posted April 23, 2014 (edited) Removing vicinity is an, no offense, stupid bad idea in my opinion. It's a key feature in not only picking up/sorting items, but also in general inventory management. There's only so much you can do with the scroll-wheel over items method of looting - not only that, but the scroll-wheel method is wonky when you're trying to aim at something. I can see why you don't like it, though. Now, what about making it so you can't move while in your inventory like in Arma 2? That's how it was in the DayZ mod (for A2) and it wasn't abused; everybody was happy with it, no complaints. Gavin Edited April 23, 2014 by Gaveroid
