mgc 92 Posted April 2, 2014 Turning off shadows should imo not be allowed. It takes away an important aspect of camouflage.

zifadel 48 Posted April 2, 2014 Wouldn't it only turn off the shadows your character sees? If I have shadows enabled, I will see your shadows even if you have yours turned off.
SmashT 10907 Posted April 2, 2014 Shadows also have a significant impact on performance for many people, a better idea would to make it a server side setting and have this filterable in the browser.

enforcer1975 1111 Posted April 2, 2014 It helps people like me with low end PC's and Laptops to play the game and get better FPS.No. Blabla my pc, fps...buhuhu...sometimes the advantage of disabling shadows or any effect at all isn't good for fair gameplay... So Sexy 259 Posted April 2, 2014 Blabla my pc, fps...buhuhu...sometimes the advantage of disabling shadows or any effect at all isn't good for fair gameplay...Yeah, and obviously these shadows, are such a ****ing important part of the game. And you shouldnt talk like that, there are people who play on slower pc-s for various reasons, and they shouldnt be denied the fun, as I said above, these shadows arent all that important imo.
btw001 19 Posted April 2, 2014 No. I only get like 20 fps on lowest settings without shadows. If shadows was required, I wouldn't be able to play.
DURRHUNTER 597 Posted April 2, 2014 people who play on slower pc-s for various reasons, and they shouldnt be denied the fun, as I said above, these shadows arent all that important imo.Thank you for understanding me. i play DayZ on a 4 year old computer (HP Pavilion p7-1110, w/ i3-2120 @ 3.3GHz and a fucking PNY Nvidia Geforce GT 610) and i have as much fun as anyone with a super computer.
SaveMeJebus 164 Posted April 2, 2014 I bet if we took out buildings as well it would help those still trying to play on their commodore 64, fek everyone else if they have a good enough computer they can turn buildings off too ......

SaveMeJebus 164 Posted April 2, 2014 Lol nah I'm quite able to handle any embarrassment thanks for your concern tho ... just sick of concessions being made in games that effect gameplay to make people on laptops and 10 yr old computers happy, The difference between terrain and shadow settings from low to high makes a huge difference in gameplay especially at dawn/dusk for the shadows. I know its a necessary evil in the beginning because of the lack of optimizations causing performance issues but I hope that once the game is sufficiently optimized these kind of options are not changable. So Sexy 259 Posted April 2, 2014 (edited) Well in case you didnt know, not all of us have top notch pc-s bought by our parents, and there is a big amount of players with older rigs, so the devs cant not think about a big portion of the community, and almost nobody plays on late time servers, so its still not an issue. SaveMeJebus 164 Posted April 2, 2014 (edited) ah .. why am I not surprised you don't like "late time" servers, just for the record my parents quit buying my things long ago so I hope that was just a general statement rather than aimed at me. FYI there are quIte a few people that play and enjoy the game in the dim/dark settings of dusk/night/dawn its a very immersive time to play but I suppose you wouldn't know much about immersion with all your video settings turned all the way down. Trigger Hippy 176 Posted April 2, 2014 Wouldn't it only turn off the shadows your character sees? If I have shadows enabled, I will see your shadows even if you have yours turned off. Yes. I remember playing Americas Army. If you had your shadows off you could sometimes wonder how people knew you were around the corner...they could see your shadow and you couldn't. qww 287 Posted April 2, 2014 shadows are a big part of cover, its not cool to think that players have them disabled, even they are not doing it to gain an advantage. i think it should be essential to have a minumum shadow setting in place.
BeefBacon 1185 Posted April 3, 2014 Grass may be a problem too. Pretty sure you can turn that off. Good luck going prone to hide if someone has a pc that can't run DayZ. Obviously not all computers can run all games. Until recently my pc could barely run Arma 2. However, there are certain visual effects that, when turned off, provide an advantage. Not that it matters anyway. Even if there was a mandatory "you must have shadows and grass" I imagine people would edit the .ini or whatever and find some way around it

My rig is 3 1/2 yo by now and it might still be better than your hardware but thinking shadows are not so important especially when they are part of concealment it's obviously a big deal when you turn them off. There might be players with even worse rigs but asking for a downgrade is too much imo. It's not like i'm asking everyone to go ultra shadows... Capo 323 Posted April 3, 2014 Set a minimum shadow setting, or at least some other workaround. low end PC or not, it's an unfair advantage. People who are going "why do shadows matter". Well they provide camouflage, so they're pretty important when you don't want to be seen. The difference between a flouro survivor and one in the shade is pretty stark once you compare them.
DURRHUNTER 597 Posted April 3, 2014 If you want camouflage, go on a damn nighttime server. Plenty of shadows there.

kichilron 8550 Posted April 3, 2014 As many people have pointed out previously - it's not necessarily about having an advantage. I personally have constant 60 FPS (even in towns) on ARMA 2 / DayZ Mod with VSync turned on. And I consider my computer being rather powerful. However, for some reason, shadows really do have an immense impact on my performance, making me drop in frames significantly overall plus some stuttering I get from time to time. That is the reason I have shadows disabled on any BIS-game immediately while setting up my Graphics. You can't always chose what you want to have.

You can't always chose what you want to have.""it's not necessarily about having an advantage.""It allows for one and that's enough for me to disable shadow as well. The obvious fix would be to put some effort in this relatively important feature (talking about camouflage) to make it less of a drain so low end computers can run the simplest setting.
