kichilron 8550 Posted April 3, 2014 ""it's not necessarily about having an advantage.""It allows for one and that's enough for me to disable shadow as well. The obvious fix would be to put some effort in this relatively important feature (talking about camouflage) to make it less of a drain so low end computers can run the simplest setting. Where exactly are shadows a very important feature when there's the option to turn them off, thus eliminating the problems it was creating it in the first place? Why work on shadows when there are people all over the forums screaming "fix loot" / "fix zombie" / "ololol shit gmae!"?
Trigger Hippy 176 Posted April 3, 2014 Blabla my pc, fps...buhuhu...sometimes the advantage of disabling shadows or any effect at all isn't good for fair gameplay... You have the option to disable it too.
enforcer1975 1111 Posted April 3, 2014 ... So basically why not play on lowest settings to get every frame you can possibly get? Fuck graphics quality as long as the game is good enough it doesn't matter? First people loved games then suddenly graphics mattered but the contents suffered because people wanted EFFECTS!!!! This is basically where the gaming industry is heading atm...

I've got time.Shadows are an important aid to camouflage. It also helps with realism / immersion. This is fact. ""people all over the forums screaming "fix loot" / "fix zombie" / "ololol shit gmae!"?""Obviously preference must be given to the less articulate members of this mature and balanced community.
Jex 1104 Posted April 3, 2014 Shadows also have a significant impact on performance for many people, a better idea would to make it a server side setting and have this filterable in the browser. This. But if not, I have a shitty laptop that chugs along, shadows would ruin it for me but I'm still not against it. I'll be fine once I get my new PC but in the meantime i'm prepared to put up with it whilst I wait. DayZ seems to be a game where using the terrain and the effects of lighting have a big impact on playing. Or....BIS buy us all new PC's from the sales of arma 2 after dayz came along! taco86 156 Posted April 3, 2014 I'd say that the motive for wanting shadows (or really any camouflage aiding graphics setting) is completely genuine here... The goal of such a change suggested by the OP is to try and level the playing field for everyone in regards to how players see other players. In principle this notion is correct imo, however the reality of the current state of the game certainly favors the availability of a client side shadow option... When the client gets heavily optimized in beta, I'd think pushing a server side setting forcing player clients to render shadows at a minimum setting would be perfect... TEST_SUBJECT_83 465 Posted April 3, 2014 (edited) Disabling shadows gives an unfair advantage to those who disable them.Same goes for post processing, most people disable this, but it is a huge part of the game, knowing how low your health is. But honestly this is all just an alpha thing.By beta, you wont be able to disable these things and it will be a level playing field for all. I will look for the stream I heard Dean say that he is going to change this later onand that being able to disable shadows and post processing is only temporary and is only allowed now for performance reasons.Eventually when the game is running at a stable 60fps (believe it when I see it, lol!) then disabling those settings wont be allowed anymoresince people with low end PC's will be able to run DayZ without issues. teapot156 79 Posted April 3, 2014 Shadows have minimal tactical advantage in game. What conceals your position mainly is your movement and the color of the clothes you have on.
Chaingunfighter 917 Posted April 4, 2014 Shadows have minimal tactical advantage in game. What conceals your position mainly is your movement and the color of the clothes you have on.Shadows seem to hardly make a difference in most cases, unless you're in a big city. I run DayZ at max settings and I can't say the shadows stand out as "amazing". Even Arma 3's have some quirks, although they heavily improved them over A2:OA & Take on Helicopters.
