getting wet: visual effect instead of text messages

Recommended Posts

when it rains, you get a message on your screen which tells wether you are getting wet or not. Running through a forest, it can be a bit irritating because you get dozens of messages.

What about replacing the text messages with a visual effect? When you get wet, you see some water splashes on your screen. When you are no longer getting wet, they disappear. Of course the water shouldn`t be static, but streaming down.

It can look al little bit like this.

We already have visual effects for low blood or for getting hit, so it would fit good if getting wet is also shown by a screen effect.

Sounds very good to me,in the past i proposed

a hud indicator that simply lights up,but keeps a low

profile to be plave on the bottom f the screen, but your idea is much

more realistic let's keep it subtle not to take toll of our line of sight though.

Sounds good to me, but what about weak Computers? I guess it might be too much for older Systems.

I'd rather have wet/drenched textures on the clothing.n

Just some rain on the screen is okay, i guess. i like it more then those messages. In general, messages should more and more disappear and the different things should be noticed in another way.

This would make the game too realistic. It would remind me of the time I went out and got water all over the giant lens that I keep on my face at all times.

But seriously, the messages are fine. Would also nice if the texture specularity on clothing became more intense the more drenched your character got, but please no water effects on the screen.

I would as well, but I know there are certain unclear areas where you are not getting wet, like being in the right spot under a tree.  I suggested this before, I think there should be a subtle sound of rain hitting clothing when the player is getting wet.  We can all hear rain hit our clothes, whether we're wearing a plastic poncho or just a flannel shirt.

I want there to be a visual effect of getting wet, but drying takes time and it might make things confusing for the player since the clothes wouldn't be dry right when they're not getting wet.  I think there should be both visual and audio with getting wet.

Very few discreet drops on corners screen, vanishing after a second, replaced randomly by others.

It's enough to notice when getting wet, no need to impair more player vision (the falling rain+fog already do it).

Messages just need to be set to current thought only when outside of tab menu instead of a list. When dealing with rain, it should only tell you "I am no longer getting wet" when you have stopped under something that provides shelter for a minute.

I like it too and it shouldn't drain processes - the effect has been round for years. However, it's kind of redundant, both systems. Usually when I look out a window and see it is raining I don't think I'll be anything other than wet standing out in it - it's a no brainer. Of course I'm going to get wet!

All we need is a status indicator in our inventory with some descriptive text

Damp

Wet

Soaked

Why even both with either system when we really don't need it?

I agree that it can be very obvious if you are getting wet. But in a video game, i would like to have some kind of Information as I want to know if I´m really protected by the tree next to me or if I have to be closer. It`s also usefull if you don`t know if a certain object protects the player, e. g. bushes of different size. And honestly, I want to have a comfortable reminder and last but not least: both a visual effect and a sound effect make the game more authentic to me

Trees and bushes only protect a little and when they are soaked through, it all falls on your anyway. You can also see where the rain isn't falling by the absence of rain drops on the ground.

In my opinion, it's not about the effect beeing absolutly nessecary, but it could be helpfull. To be honest who is looking on the ground all time? I'm not ;). When the rain is causing negative effects somewhen, it's needed. And it's better to have small visual effects than the notice.

Yes that's my point. Don't have text telling me I'm wet and visual clues on the ground will tell you if ur stood in it and the inventory screen can show you if ur damp/wet/soaked.

Maybe they should have a clearer status area like

Environment

Getting Wet| Status: Damp

Getting Cold| Status: Shivering

Health

Stomach pains| Status: Feeling sick

Etc

Something like that where we can see things. I hate the text crap that comes up and how much more will there be as the game progresses?

I need to pee

I feel hungry

my clothes feel damp

my nose is running

I am sneezing

I feel a turtle

I am thirsty

my leg hurts

my stomach grumbles

i peed myself

I stink

I poopied in my pants....

They only need one thing showing up in text chat and that is

"SERVER RESTARTING IN 15 MINUTES!!"

This or just a simple sound effect of rain hitting your clothes.

Just a subtle sound, nothing to loud and it could even sound different depending on the type of clothing you have on.

A rain coat would be a louder than a tac shirt kind of thing.

I play FPP servers only so a visual que for your character for any game mechanic doesn't really help for FPP.

Having both a sound and visual que like wet textures or water drops on the screen would be ideal.

But honestly do we really need anything to tell us were getting wet?

I mean, you can see that it is raining, what more do you need?

If it's raining, and your outside, then your getting wet.

If your standing under something then your not getting wet anymore.

I don't get the need for the text in the first place.

This is good.

Water dripping over my eyeballs is not.

This would be a decent source to work on.

That sound at a low volume would be great for when wearing a raincoat. Something softer for any shirt or jacket thats cloth.

If I was devs I would only use a single sound effect for that purpose, not because I'm lazzy but because of performance (each file have to be (pre)loaded somewhere).

A trick could be to clone its class and pitch up +10% or +20% that sound (it's just a line code to add, but same unique source file).
