tmbt 34 Posted March 14, 2014 Before you think I'm crazy let me explain.I was entering Balota and i decided to do a rapid check before going in. I immediately saw that on the radio tower there was a sniper. He was proned so actually i was able to see only his backpack ( I was between the radio tower and the fence). He hadn't see me so I moved back trying to find a spot with a better view to kill him but i only had an SKS without any scope so i was forced to stay near the radio tower. In the end i decided to take my chance and i start shooting at him or better i start shooting at his backpack. 3 shoots and he was dead. From where i was i could have not hit him because of the inclination (there is a little wall all around the top of the radio tower building). So my guess is : when you wear a backpack is like a part of your body. What do you think guys ?

Elle 562 Posted March 14, 2014 I've seen the DayZ SA mythbusters video that shows a person getting killed with shots to only the weapon so it makes sense that the backpack would be the same.

Disgraced 1123 Posted March 14, 2014 I've seen the DayZ SA mythbusters video that shows a person getting killed with shots to only the weapon so it makes sense that the backpack would be the same.I was gonna say this. I would say that anything you are wearing/using becomes part of your overall hitbox for assessing damage. Realism!!
eleventhavenue 204 Posted March 14, 2014 In ye olden Arma, shots would ricochet when they hit your weapon? I find it strange that this doesn't happen in the SA
Grimey Rick 3417 Posted March 14, 2014 I guess I'll go back to using the Improvised Backpack. IIRC, it's the least protruding backpack.
problembarn420 3 Posted March 14, 2014 (edited) I've started using smaller backpacks for two reason; this one you described (which I wasn't certain of) and how much easier your spotted with a large backpack.Hunting is the largest one I go for, which I put above taloon because of the colours (it's fabolooouus). Best one might be the rope-burlap(+sticks). That beeing said it's hard to say if this is true though, bullets can ricochet from wall, or so I believe. Some walls can be shot through, even when it makes no sense. There's basicly alot of things that could've led to that person you shot at dying, your suspicion beeing one of them. EDIT: did you loot him afterwards? If you did, how much of his clothes were ruined? Would be nice to know, but I assume his shirt and stuff was also ruined? Elle 562 Posted March 14, 2014 on the subject of ricochet... I did see a vid of a couple of guys messing around in a lil town, they were standing next to a wall and one of them accidently discharges his FNX and the ricochet wounded his friend to the point of requiring a bandage. you could see the bullet impact the wall and the friend was to the left of LOS. so ricochet was happening a month or so ago so I assume it still does. on a side note: I need to stop watching so many videos... rydekk 250 Posted March 14, 2014 Oh, wow. Another reason to not wear a mountain pack.If this is true, they need to fix this. In theory, everything you carry is in your hitbox. Thus, in theory if someone shoots you in your backback. You take damage.

So my guess is : when you wear a backpack is like a part of your body. What do you think guys ? This is 100% accurate. I just killed a guy who was camping underneath one of the jail floors in Balota. He was attempting to open up a can o' whack-a-mole on people coming into the jail by crouching through the floor, shooting, then laying prone again. He shot me, ruining my shirt, breaking my arm, and causing me to bleed. I dashed upstairs and fixed myself up. I then watched from upstairs through a little vantage spot through the railing as he was crawling around downstairs. At one point I saw his Hunting Backpack so I just sprayed the area. He died. I mocked the mitochondria straight out of his eukaryotic cells, baby. +1 for this thread. BadAsh (DayZ) 1513 Posted March 14, 2014 (edited) There has been several videos showing people camping prone on rooftops being killed because they were hit in the backpack which was sticking out. So yes, so far that is entirely possible. Example (around 6 min mark): Edited March 14, 2014 by BadAsh
Irish. 4886 Posted March 14, 2014 If you get in a firefight, and are pinned down.. take the pack off. Set up your gear, if you get in firefights often, so that all you need is on your person.. bandages, ammo, etc. That way you can ditch the pack and worse case you lose your gear, which happens when you die anyhow. If all you lose is a pack full of food and tools, you should be fine replenishing that. Anything you have on becomes a hit box for you. Anything.. that nice pilot helmet? Just made your head a larger target. This is not how it should be, and I would hope that in the final release your gear gets damaged with a slight chance you do too via bullet physics and travel on impact. But dying from simply having the tip of your Mosin shot is just absurd.. and I hope it gets fixed.
Karakoz 141 Posted March 14, 2014 (edited) Pristine stuff actually protects you from damage. I don't know if it works with the backpack, but it works with clothes, and I think that the stuff inside also protects you especially if it is pristine. I wouldn't be surprised if the backpack also protects your back. So it could be useful to wear a backpack when you are not camping. xRann 126 Posted March 14, 2014 Also, the backpack counts a part of your torso as far as the game is concerned when processing damage. So, a shot to small piece of your bag showing results in damage directed through your clothing->items carried->torso. Shooting someones weapon can have the same effect, save some of the melee weapons which block bullets. So if you can see someones rifle sticking out around a corner or something, shooting it will result in damage to that players clothing->items carried->arms/torso. Makes sense when you understand how the damage is dealt, but doesn't really make sense in any realistic way. Ballistic and melee damage are dealt differently. Melee is through the arc of the attack, whereas ballistic is direct point. I know Rocket was talking about having ballistic damage deal through the ballistic trajectory but I don't know if that was ever implemented. By that I mean, if you were directly above someone and shot them on the top of their head in a direction where the bullet would pass through and out somewhere near their legs you would deal damage through all clothing->items carried->entire body.
