More than 200 votes, not something I would have expected. I think we can all agree now that we kind of want a further character value than just the gear someone is wearing. Many people do not want it, but many people also like to spawn in electro and do deathmatch, I guess.

Maybe we can get some more votes.

Reward =/= Character value

Why not? It pretty much does. Any reward would give your character more value. Other wise it wouldn't be a reward, or atleast it wouldn't be very rewarding.

Personally, I actually like re-gearing after a long time surviving. At a certain point my life and the lives of my squadmates don't really mean anything to me, I start doing a lot more dangerous things and taking bigger risks until I die and can enjoy searching for loot again. It doesn't have anything to do with the amount of gear in-game currently, but more just knowing that the character I've worked so hard for is just a bambi under all of that armor, if that makes any sense. There's nothing really to work towards in my eyes is what I'm saying.

What I would like is something that would make me actually cringe if I died after surviving a month simply because I lost it, something that is character based instead of gear based. That would be something worth fighting for or even worth giving up during an encounter with someone else in the hopes they might spare my life. Gear can always be found again, but something that made me truly feel a sense of loss at the point of my character's death would be amazing!

Same here, I get kinda bored after getting geared out and usually end up almost wanting to die just so I have something to kinda work towards. The game definitely needs someway to make the character more important than loot. There is too much YOLOing when people get held up because of that. People would rather die than lose their gear.

A reward could be a Steam Achievement or email from BI informing you of your greatness.

Would you like a reward for staying alive? Do you want DayZ to be about survival?

Are you implying that DayZ can't be about survival if there are "no rewards" for surviving?

DayZ is not about chasing the carrot.  If you want a reward go back to WoW, BF, CoD or whatever game that will hand everything out to you on a silver platter just for playing.

Skills:no. What would stop someone from going on an unpopulated server for 20+ hours and padding time?

Would grant them a boost they don't deserve.

However, a beard would be a fun idea that wouldn't break the game.

If you artificially inflated your lifetime by camping out and cheated to grow one, that beard would know.

It would never look you in the eye again when you made love.

who the hell plays alone? what the hell.

Well, your argument applies to loot too.

If someone plays on an empty server, loot is way easier to get, so they dont 'deserve' it? dont think so.

Beards, as it has been mentioned. Nothing else.

Especially ladybeards.

Bwaahahahahahah! What, are you kidding?! You are, right? Because I don't hear people often who play DayZ not have the shit thrilled out of them when they find a DMR. DayZ is currently all about chasing carrots!

dayz circle of life

spawn

gear up

kill everything

gear more up

become a even bigger douchebag

get killed by a bug or other douchebag

respawn

....

http://youtu.be/AFl29U1krYc

serious, it would be something if we can get away from the whole Call of faggot deathmatch master l33t haxx0r gameplay and think about how to turn this zombie genocide up!

Iam pretty damn sure the basic idea behind DAYZ wasnt to have a friggin Deathmatch in a very very big arena

The goal after gearing up will be desperate defense against horrific hordes of zombies.

Everybody seems to forget about the zombies.

Poor harmless zombies.

Reward?

killzcounter!

Reward =/= Character value

Couple thoughts here.

Your example of a Steam Achievement, though an example, would just lead people to afk logging out in some random bush somewhere they are very very unlikely to be found, for days, only eating from the massive amount of supply's they have stocked up or have their friends bring them.

Secondly, any type of reward would be ripe for trolls to prevent people from achieving it. This could directly increase KOS, as you are now competing MORE to survive for said reward, and some people just want to watch the world burn.

And finally, why Is being alive not enough of a reward? If anything this thread seems to indicate that death isnt serious enough. You could reward surviving by having a forced lockout for an hour after you have been killed. That would certainly reward surviving, but would that be better for the game?

An alternative question to ask, what could surviving allow you to achieve, that dieing prevents? Are the systems in place that could support this? Could one be created?

What is the reward for playing mine-craft? There really isn't one. Yet people still play.

Well, yes it IS a role playing game. Right now characters just accumulate stuff (VERY American, btw) and people bitch about losing their stuff. Make their life worth more than their stuff.

That is an unfair and rather xenophobic remark.

My priority's are as they would be in real life. Food, Clothing, Shelter, protection. When my basic needs are met I expand to help those around me as best I can.

Food is STUFF. Without it I will starve.

Clothing is STUFF. Without it I will freeze, and not be able to carry food.

Shelter is ... well its a thing but it falls under STUFF, to make sure I dont die in the woods alone at night.

Protection can be best achieved by weapons, STUFF. I can defend my food, shelter, and those who can not defend them-self.

Its convenient that you seem to bash Americans, but you offer no alternatives to 'stuff'. But Ill do you one better. By gaining the ability to defend myself, and finding extra ... stuff... I can choose to interact with people in such a way to offer real help, or defend myself if needed. Non of which is possible without stuff. Therefore, stuff enables people to have meaningful interaction, because the people who have stuff have an advantage over people who dont. This creates a dynamic situation that is at the core of this game.

Judopunch, my example of those achievements was to simply point out that "reward does not always mean character value"

But you dont mention what kind of value other value there could be. You gave the example of an achievement. Great, than what? It doesnt really reward you for surviving after you get it.

You also dont bring up any of my other discussion points from the post you just quoted. Why?

I think you are missing the point.

My Reward =/= Character value statement was in reply to the person who suggested that Reward = Character value. I was simply suggesting that was untrue and providing an example.

Also I did not quote anything there...

There's already a reward for surviving longer, and that's >insert accumulated stuff, experiennce etc<. People that blatantly want rewards for doing one thing don't understand how sandboxes work

Oh wow! >.>

I'm pretty amazed that "yes" got so many votes.

I think the end goal is to create a gritty hardcore risk management survival game that doesn't lend you free handouts.
