Players Become Zombies After Death

Recommended Posts

I think it would be a nice touch to the game world if after a set period of time deceased players would rise up and become AI controlled zombies themselves.  They would shamble around with whatever gear they had at the time of death.  Other players would be able to kill them and loot as a normal player.  Give it a timer of 30 minutes or so.  Reanimation could be prevented by burning the body (give those matches something to do)  May help address some issues with zombies respawning and adds a nice touch.

Zombies are too freaky, the sight of being one, especially a girl one, i would run into a player and kill myself.

The zombies aren't dead, they are living infected people.

That's something I always wanted. It's been like that in The Dead Linger for a while. When you get scratched or bit by a zombie, you have the chance to get infected. Once infected, there's no cure and eventually, you die and come back as a zombie. (AI controlled) It's a very nice feature and is not often seen, while it's always been in the lore of the zombie genre.

In multiplayer, it's up to you to tell you survivor friends or not...

Seriously? So they're not walking dead, undead or anything close to the "conventional" zombies right?

Well, get attacked and have a chance to get infected, then turn into a zombie. There's no cure right? If there's no way for "new" zombies to come up (instead of just the server restart or a respawn timer) then it's not an infection anymore.

Anyway, makes it way more interesting to have OP's feature in game. (if not possible for technical reasons, that's sad but understandable)

With what little Lore has been released about DayZ, the zombies are living infected humans, and the players are the 1% or so of the population that is completely immune to the zombie virus (confirmed by Dean).  Being Immune we cannot catch the virus, therefore even if the virus did reanimate the dead we would be the only dead bodies that say down since we're immune.

As mentioned above the technical reason why we can't be zombies when we die is because zombies have 1-2 layers on them (body and clothes) where as players are multiple layers (body, pants, shirt/jacket, gloves, helmet, backpack, and an AI as such would lag the server more than (especially with the amount of 'man I spawned in Solnichny again, I better kill myself' players we have.)

Thought of this as well, I don't see why not plus it would give players that extra hidden loot excitement, like finding a tent in the middle of no where.

i thought this myself. . .or possible having the option to play as zombie only hunting down survivors. . . and using restraints ie, rope, cuff to inject the antidote turn said player back to human. . .

Dean said in a live stream that it isn't really possible, I forgot the specifics. I think it was something to do with all the gear a player has or something.

It has something to do with the fact that Zombies are a singular object within the world, like a piece of fruit.  Once the object has been acted upon, it vanishes, freeing up server resources and eliminating it from existence.  This was done to make the zombies as resource-stingy as possible, allowing more to be incorporated into the game down the road.  The "infected" bit, while true and confirmed by Dean, is likely nothing more than a cover story to assuage gamers from expecting a complex player object from turning into a simple zombie object. I.E. People turning into zombies makes no sense like Will Smith becoming a zombie in I Am Legend makes no sense. It's just not in the cards.  The trade off is that instead of having relatively few manipulable, loot carrying 'infected', we'll have plentiful, dangerous numbers of simple 'infected'.
