Whats wrong with server hopping?

Recommended Posts

For awhile while playing Day Z I frowned on Server Hopping, but then began to actually think about it and I asked myself, how is it bad? Would you rather search for the same weapon that you may or may not find for four hours or would you rather just go grab said weapon or gear and have fun with it.

Eventually you are going to die and said gear will be redistributed back into the environment + servers restart so if anything you are saving gear from being wiped and becoming useless.

But now, I don't frown on Server Hopping nearly as much, I will admit I do it occasionally (did it at vybor today, although I didn't find anything that I really wanted (i wanted the m4) but i did find some good stuff) and call me a scumbag or what ever for doing it but until someone offers me a viable explanation for why you shouldn't server hop, i don't see the issue with it.

edit:

If someone offers me a viable explanation for why you shouldn't server hop then I will stop doing it

It defeats the purpose of the game, which is in essence- a time sink.  The "game" is basically finding what you need to survive, thrive, etc.

By server hopping and fast tracking that process, you're effectively skipping all the 'content.'

...As I understand it.

1. what is the point in playing dayZ if you're just gonna use an exploit to find your gear?

2. how is it fun to find a weapon or item by using an exploit?

3. you're effectively cheating, it's clearly not meant to be like that.

4. if you're gonna just server hop to find gear, why not play CoD or battlefield? or wasteland on arma 2? in all of those you spawn with a weapon and dont ruin the game for the rest of us

there's 4 viable reasons that i can think of off the top of my head. honestly what on earth happened to this community? as soon as the standalone came out there was a massive influx of idiots on the forums

Nothing wrong with it, I do server hop to get those special double magazines (60 bullets)

Now combat logging off is a different thing, you got careless and got ambushed? take your medicine!

This in a nut shell really, do you think if it was intended to allow jumping servers to loot grab why do you think the devs would be working on an anti server hopping mechanisim.

But even further if you hope a server and on the new server you spot someone and shoot them in the back do you think this is fair they havent had the chance to see you work your way into a spot in the first place ( i know just logging back into the server you play can result in this to but do you think it will happen more or less often when you start jumping servers.

You might ruin the fun for someone who does play legitimately. Maybe that person just took 30 minutes walking to the police station you just hopped in, on his server. And you steal the gear right from under his nose. If you do this 10 times, imagine how many legit players you might dissapoint.

Not server hopping, and actually taking a while to gather your precious loot. The value of your loot will increase by 100% if you had to search for it for hours. Which adds to the game.

you don't even deserve to get a reply, there's no way you'll ever comprehend these simple concepts. i just wish dayZ was less popular so the community wasn't littered with idiot cod kids who really should just not be playing this game.

If you have to ask the question, you probably won't understand the answer

Seems you already got an answer before you even posted.... Seriously the game can be played any style fashion you want i am not against KOS or anything else but when you start exploiting you already know your not playing it legit otherwise it wouldnt be exploiting now would it....

I did it extensively when I first got the game.

Learned where loot spawns, where it doesn't, what spawns where and with what frequency. NEVER used any of the gear I found to kill other players, and more often than not, died while doing it, usually due to clipping through the walls on the 50th floor to fall to my death (also a valuable learning experience).

In THAT circumstance: a minor sin.

But if you use any of the equipment or weapons you find in any kind of player interaction, you are utilizing an exploit to gain an un-intended advantage. In essence? CHEATING.

Having said my piece, I leave this thread to the inevitable flame war it is sure to become.

EDIT:

It could be said that having learned where everything spawns by server hoping was utilizing an exploit to gain an unfair advantage over others. IN ESSENCE? CHEATING. I cant deny it. I wont.

But to be fair, I never used the stuff I found in any kind of interaction with others. AND I was trying to learn more about a game I knew little about. For example, I knew almost imeadiately that there is no point in gathering shot gun shells. Or wood. Or matches. Or wrenches, hammers, and pliers. or defibs. or cooking stoves. Or cooking pots.....

anyway. goodnight. im tire.

Please explain why you think the one of the two is more legit?

Both are ruining the realism that the game is set out to deliver.

Server hopping detracts a lot of difficulty and decision-making from the game when the best solutions to certain problems can be solved by simply hopping to a different server.

Why run to Northwest Airfield when I can just server hop around low populated servers and loot Balota Airfield on each? Why spend any decent amount of time looking for a civilian weapon in a town when I'm more likely to find a superior military-grade weapon by server hopping around low populated servers while removing any risk of dying as well? Why spend time hiding from a nearby survivor when I can go "hide" on a different server entirely?

You are cutting the survival aspect out of the game, entirely.  Sure, one day, you might hop into a room that people are in, and get ganked, but the odds are most likely in your favor.  If you want to just play with toys, get Arma 2 or 3.  Quite easy to try everything out, without any danger to your character.

There was a time when this game was considered 'hard' or 'unforgiving', but little boys that can't stand losing had to figure out every way possible to, 'game the game'.

The game and the community are poorer for it.  So is gaming in general. *shrug*

They cant live without "instant gratification" henche why things like child competitions where EVERYONE WINS exist. I dont care what the Kids do. I found them hillarious. Saw a dude the other day with a mosy Shooting freshys...he missed me 7! times even as i stood still on a open field. Than came closer and missed again 6 times with the Magnum while i zig zaged the fool and gave him the axe.  His childish voice was so funny "hey you stop"...rofl...

If you feel the Need to Server hop, yes you dident understand what makes this game great or you justify it by saying ALPHA durrrp not much to do me so bored...blablabla....

Look at the bright side: they gave BI money (i'm asuming this is a good thing). Now let's hope they get bored soon, so we can enjoy the game in peace.

The "spirit" of the game is that you are supposed to wander the vast environment, surviving one bullet or can of beans at a time, avoiding zombies and dealing with other players.  Running to Balota on a low pop server, then hopping across other low pop servers until you fast track to full commando gear sort of defeats the entire purpose of the game.

Until someone pbo hacks and shoots you through several buildings.

With absolutely no way to store your most precious loot (yet) and exploits, bugs and hackers all over, people are going to get tired of working for things the hard way only to lose it to people being cheap assholes.

And considering everyone I run into is fully decked out in the best gear ever, I'm going to assume they were server hopping, because I doubt I keep running into that one legit decked guy on the server.
