Great thread, couldn't agree more.

By the way Gews just wanted to say thanks for all your work on convincing the devs to use more authentic ballistic data and for posting the shot dispersion charts and weapon damage values as well as educating people re: sub sonic rounds.

It's great to see someone putting in an effort like that as most (myself included) don't know how to pull the data out of the files. Also happy to see you educating others on subsonic rounds.

Keep up the great work!

I loved the zoom and don't see why its gone....

I always just thought of it like this...

 

Zoomed down sights - putting your eye right by the optics (loosing some peripheral vision)

 

Not Zoomed - having the sights/scope a little away from your eye so you can still get some decent peripheral vision.

Great. Now let's also petition for private hives.

 

The game is full of hackers and yet Dean is talking about immersion and all that.

 

How is that going to happen? What's going to happen when we setup a camp and have items stored in backpacks/refrigerators, how long until we do all that and get killed by a teleporting douche, how long? not very long.

 

Give us private hives, they will only make the game better.

+1 Bring back this feature! IT is an Alpha so maybe it's going to be back in the game since all the zooms are fucked in the game right now.

I think iron sight zooming could be nerfed from Arma but Arma one was good also. My main demandis that I want my out zoomed view back that we don't have in DayZ when aiming.

Also FoV shouldn't affect max zoom in any way.

As you should already know, private hives will come later. It is quite logical really, that they want to finish most of the game before giving it to the people.

 

People really do forget that game being in Alpha means, that sh*t ton of stuff is missing.

It's really not zoom it's focused view from your default zoomed out perspective. What most people refer to as zoomed in is really 1:1

Another problem with iron sight aiming in standalone is the smoke produced by the guns.

Almost like the devs have the guns shooting black powder

Great post there Gew, always a good read from you. Il say that im not keen on that you can zoom in with your players eyes, seems like i was cheating the system of the game {i know its in the game a perfectlly legal etc} but now i mainly go first person and never zoom in, even if i get a acog sights, only really zoom in with the hunting rifle, taking thats its a veribel zoom scope and not just a standard one of course.

The main reason I gave my fully accessorised FNX45 away to some fresh spawn is the horrible dot sight zoom. It's ridiculous and utterly impractical.

Remove zooming from game.

 

Why?  The unnatural element here is the non-zoomed default state.  

 

Making objects appears as large as they would in real life requires a very limited field of view.  The default field of view is zoomed out in order to balance apparent size and monitor resoution while trying to make up for a lack of peripheral vision.

 

Having a regular "hey let's look over here" zoom-in as we do now, plus a bit of zoom on irons, is perfectly fine and not unrealistic at all.

 

Personally, it annoys me when I'm using, say, M4 iron sights and they're freakishly tiny compared to real life.  That rear aperture should take up a good half inch on your screen if you're shooting nose-to-charging-handle, based on typical distance to a PC monitor.

Watch that.

 

Your monitors resolution is probably 1080p now imagine trying to simulate an eyes resolution using a super small monitor with low resolution such as a 1080p or 1440p monitor.

 

This is why zoom is needed. Zoom represents a small segment of what your eye actually sees. A small window of the whole picture.

But it really isn't iron sight zoom.

 

It is ment to simulate the total resolution that your eye can see. Let me explain.

 

Due to the games resolution without zooming in you are greatly limited by the maximum distance you can see.

 

While in real life our 300+ mega pixel eyes let us see out for miles and miles.

 

This also allows us to aim accurately with iron sights for a substantial distance.

I'm not against the ability to HOLD right click to zoom. However, I can't stand being forced to zoom in by simply aiming with ironsights. As already stated, it makes room clearing a nightmare.

Yea have you played arma 2 ?

 

Arma 2 when you aim down the sights its not zoomed, but once you are ironed sighted if you hold right mouse button you zoom in on your irons for accurate long range shots.

 

Good combo that allows for close in work and medium distance work on the same gun and with irons.

This was a good read but I still think zooming should be removed completely unless looking down a sight that is meant to be magnified.  The part about the human eye's resolution isn't really correct.  We don't perceive images in tiny dots, so you can't ever really measure the human eye in terms of resolution.  It CAN be fooled however.  The only real way to get a realistic field of view would be to play on a monitor that encompasses your entire field of view in real life, which would require a screen that stretches around your face 180 degrees (shmancy future VR visors anyone?  Can't wait for that...).  The current zoom could be replaced with some kind of mechanic where your character squints and leans their head forward slightly more than normal, because that does actually let us see things that are farther away with more clarity, however small the benefit is (otherwise we wouldn't do it).  All this would have to be is a very, very slight zoom with the focus being directed at the center of the screen with maybe some color fade on the edges for effect.
