Are All "Hackers" Bad?

Are all "H4x0rs"that bad? When is it okay to cheat, and when isn't it?

I've met some real jerks in DayZ, of the "Hacking" variety; auto-kicked when you shoot them, mass-server-kill (of course I quit the server before dying), nuking Elektro/Cherno, spawning in 1000 zombies and a helicopter to escape on, being teleported into the ocean... et cetera. I've seen it all, on youtube or through personal experience. And it's annoying.

I bring this up for 2 reasons:

1: I was recently playing, and a hacker joined. He gave everyone (I'm assuming) 2 AI teammates. It was... odd. Very odd. Kind of fun. They killed a few zombies, before I shot them; I didn't want to run around with Hackbot 1 and Hackbot 2 at my disposal.

2: I used to play with xPenguin, a good friend who I've made a few youtube videos with. He likes to make machinima videos, and did a series in DayZ following the story of Jack Carver (No, not the Jack Carver from Far Cry 1, 2, and Instincts Evolution). It was fun, and it made me cry... but in order to do it, they had to do admin-side script commands to disable zombies for some shots, or spawn in stuff if they accidentally died while recording and needed a "Redo." At one point they created an entire town in the north-west after burning a forest down in order to do an episode that involved cannibals.

Well after this episode was recorded (about 5 months ago?), some little spit-fire pinprick starting bawling, "YOU ARE A HACKER YOU HACKER BLAMAMAMAMAMAMA." We explained to him,very carefully, and said at the beginning/end of every episode, "This is a private server and all the cheats are done for the sake of content quality." Instead, xPengiun received a global BattlEYE ban.

He went to BattlEYE support, emailed them a manuscript of the youtube comments/the video and explained, carefully, that he was not cheating or using cheats to incite cheating on servers other than his own, which he operated on his own, and had the permission of the players therein. BattlEYE support told him they were very sorry for the false accusation, but there was nothing they could do to lift the ban. He hasn't played DayZ since :(

It's never OK to cheat. Next time you're wondering about why games are so expensive, well blame hackers and pirates.

Your friend should have done his research. Hacking on any servers, private or not that have BE enabled will eventually result in a global ban.

We did used to have a guy posting on here called "the Friendly Hacker". He made some very long-winded posts justifying his actions and blaming the the community or the mod itself for making him resort to hacking.

It didn't end well for him.

For anyone interested in a Machinima, use the in-game editor! Not client-sided Scripts which will lead to a Global Ban. You can either do it on ArmA: II Operation Arrowhead if you wish to save time, or use the Editor which is accessible from the Home Screen (..With @DayZ enabled) by pressing ALT+E. Either-way, you're free to play to your heart's content - You have access to any Vehicle, any Character (Yes, even Zombies), any Weapon and any Map you have installed, provided it's also enabled. This is how many current YouTuber's, namely Frankie / Jack, make their cinematic beginnings & endings.

Whilst it may be a little difficult to understand at the beginning, there are plenty of Tutorial's going around. Also, if you need multiple people to act out something, as is shown in the '12 Dayz of Christmas', you simply copy the .pbo file which is located in your ArmA: II OA Folder within 'Missions' and move it to 'MPMissions' or add it to your DataBase if you've a 3rd Party machine hosting your Server (Some, such as DayZ.st, allow you to directly upload the .pbo from the Control Panel)

As hackers are usually the programmers who write the exploit, while the cheater is using it, I think there are several reasons hackers can do good work. They Usually get employed by security-firms and get quite a nice payment.

Considering Cheater and script-kiddies, the Script itself is a tool that allows to manipulate the game. In a way, the admin-tools on private serves are the same thing.

But in general the hack-software is like a Firearm itself. in 99/100 cases using it will only cause problems. In some rare occasions they can help to reduce the damage done by someone using them. When a cheater has devastated a server, destroying cars, players and bases, Respawning some of that stuff or removing the queue of 200 buses from nwaf to repair the game again, it's not that much of a bad thing, but the tools have to be tools for a responsible admin, not toys for a gamer.

In general: if you cheat in single-player-mode, without affecting anyone else, you should be allowed to cheat as much as you want. But as soon as there are other people, play according to the rules or don't play at all.

I understand players who think that activating godmode to counter immediate death is a good idea and doesn't harm anyone. But as a fact, there is no "god mode only" cheat avaliable and once one starts to use "only godmode" he starts to "only respawn items that glitched away" but thinks the loot-table in general is a bit glitchy, so rare stuff not found is a glitch too. Then there are other players who could benefit from that and it goes on and on and on.

Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

(Of course, using a cheat-software as a dev, to test different settings, items and scenarios in a closed development-environment is completely agreeable, Also Testing Cheats on your own server as a Stress-Test to see if the Protectionsoftware detects it. As long as it does not happen in a live game)

I remember watching a vid on youtube of a hacker watching people move about the map, then choose a victim, spawn in front about 200m away give himself a ghillie,AS50, and all the other gear he needed to which then he killed the player and teleported elsewhere to rinse and repeat on some other poor ba*tard.

Then you have the other hackers who maybe just like to spawn an apache or 2 which happened to me, 2 of them moved about the map in concentric circles just looking to ruin people's day.

I get my kicks out of helping people and working hard for my gear, that's not to say when I finally finished getting the gear to repair a little bird which then got stolen or just glitched away after one short flight that didn't royally piss me off but never once did I think 'oh maybe I should download a hack to insta spawn me a new one as I deserve it'. Everyone knows the risks of choppers and trying to hide them......the fun of owning one far outweighs that.

So to answer your question, No I think hackers are lazy bored individuals who need to go find an interest that doesn't involve bullying other people and ruining the progress of a brilliant mod.

What your friend did was different to the Hackers we're all used too but at the end of the day in the world of hacks there is only black or white, you're a hacker or your not. Sadly for whatever good intentions your friend was doing these vids he was hacking and that is unacceptable.

I'm amazed this topic keeps turning up.

Hackers/scripters are Scum. Sub Human Scum.

They have no place in our game.

Saying that though, if one wants mess around in SP then that's fine. Nothing can be carried over to the main online element and that particular realm is confined to that local machine.

Scripting online to help your oh so important video or to avenge oneself on hax0rz is utterly wrong, stupid and hopefully will get you banned.

@OP I'm sorry about your chum, but he should have done his research. His ban is legit I'm afraid.

As to "good" scripters, just because they have been "amusing" once online does not excuse the trouble they cause at all other times to many many players. If they help you its because they want Lulz and worship, not because they like you or are being nice. There's no altruism there.

Is hacking FUN would be a far better question. I assume to those that get to hack they would say yes. I on the other hand dislike 99.9% of hacks i've seen, with exception of a one flying PBX me and a friend found on a server after a hacker's client crashed

Some people will view all hacks, be they fun or otherwise as an evil vile scourges and some people will view some hacks (such as flying PBX) fun.

But on the note of your friend, yes he did infact deserve his ban as the rules are VERY clear, and I am sorry to hear about that. But he should have done his research :/

Can we please use the correct term "cheating".

Hackers are Programmers, who exploit weaknesses in code. Cheaters use tools written by Hackers. There is a difference.

The first one does it, to gain knowledge about a program or test his skill. The second does it, because he has no skills.

Please don't confuse those two. Hackers already have a bad reputation, they don't need the shit Cheaters do on their rep-sheet too.

Bandits Is not KoS is not Deathmatching. They are 3 different things, that by coincident all involve shooting at another player at one point.

Bandit : Outlaw Player who robs, kidnaps, extorts other players, to gain gear without looting for himself.

KoS : Kill on Sight - To shoot other player as soon as you see them, without warning or giving them a chance to get away alive, as a way to "ensure" not getting betrayed.

Deathmatching: Confusing dayZ with Call of Chernarus, believing that killing as many other players as possible is the one and only goal of the game.

3 entirely different motivations. 3 entirely different outcomes.
