DayZ Developer Blog 8th March

Recommended Posts

It's an unfortunate scenario.

When DayZ was literally being killed by hackers, the private hives saved it. But now it's become something else entirely.

Server lists are full of the bastard children of DayZ. There's no denying it. But if it's spoiled folks to the point where people are truly disappointed by the content of the standalone, they will still be able to carry on playing their mods.

To change the topic slightly...

For the next devblog they I'd like to suggest some participants:

Jack Frags, Boo and (for the hard of hearing) Rhinocrunch.

Think it's be a good and opiniated group to include.

Or maybe just stick to the devs giving us info. That'd be nice. I see where you're coming from but I don't want to hear an interview or the other guy's opinions on it (no offence Rhino), it's WAY too early for that, their time will come when the game is in a playable state.

I'd just like nice juicy nuggets of info and some screenshots. Also, I'm at the point where I don't really want to know too much more TBH so I hope the devs (I know they are) keep some surprises up their sleeve, too much info is a bad thing. If people keep crying for more and more info then let them cry I say.

honestly...people like Bushlurker, Mondkalb or Sumrak ( arma modding community members) for example would make more sense for testing than youtube heroes..just my two cents

To be honest I'm happy with what I've seen so far and I love the whole style (or lack of) they go about sharing stuff. They have set a great benchmark for all games.

So are Youtubers the new celebrity? Their opinions are suddenly worth more than everyone else.

I will always remember a newspaper article i read in my youth in Perth, it was a story about whale hunting, and the headline was:

"Paul McCartney says Save the Whales"

He also said "where rocking-horse people eat marshmallow pies". Food for thought indeed.

This is in my eyes the problem with DayZ and that's why I am suggesting that teamwork should be more beneficial. NOT forced. Different diets required is a step into the right direction imho because it could make people trade food items with each other. Another idea that I would have to actually "penalize" shooting players (mind you, I have no problem with bandits, but with guys that go PvP only) could be that if you shoot another player, there is a high probability (maybe 50%), that you damage the stuff they have in their inventory. Like a guy with NV goggles get shot and there is a 50% chance that by killing him, the item gets damaged.

I liked the idea, that some tasks might be only possible when done in a group. (f.e. lifting a broken motorcycle onto your car to move it; Building bigger things; etc.) and other things to be done faster when done in a group. (f.e. repairing cars. 2 people are faster than one).

In a real survivor scenario, a lone wolf would live in a small, hidden camp, while large groups might be able to fortify a larger object.

I would like to see a balance, that considers these differences. That allows a lone wolf, to build his small hidden camp, have small stashes. But if he wanted go bigger, he'd have to trust other people or he will never get it done.

In end-game aspects I'd even love to see projects that require 10 or 20 players to work together on the same goal. Like reactivating a plant that converts saltwater into drinkable water, Reactivating powerplants, etc. Things that no single group could do on their own, unless they are half of a servers population.

As long as there is nothing you'd need another player for, there is no need to keep any other player alive.

What I'm really looking forward to is the potential social interactions that all these features will be able to offer. Here's an example:-

You and 4 other people are walking along, and you see a guy who's got some sweet kit. If you shoot him, you're gonna damage the items he has. All you want are the items. If you engage, you take the risk of you's getting clipped yourself.

The guy with the gear is then ambushed by your team. He relinqishes his weapon, drops his gear. At this point, you've got what you want and he has nothing to attack you with. To shoot him would be a waste of bullets, so you go your seperate ways.

Can anyone see this actually happening?

Can you imagine a gameplay style coming into mass effect where people aren't just unloading magazine after magazine?

It's definitely one of my larger concerns for the game...

I'm glad someone else thinks this too. I'd much rather have someone (like Ivan Buchta for example) talk about the games progress and development rather than some Youtube 'star' who frankly knows less about the game engine than I do.

Offtopic: Paul McCartney - Keep picking on a dead man Paul. Classy....

Hello there

I'm 100pc against any 'tuber regularly participating/handling media output from the devs.

I'm surprised folk are so focusing on a rough and ready video that's obviously for folk interested on the build progress, rather than looking for a multi million dollar trailer.

In fact I can't believe I've now wasted a minute or so of my time on the subject.

I just advise those who didn't like the video never to walk into a restaurant's kitchen, a car repair shop, factory floor or anything similar, it will shatter your world view.

Rgds

I've really enjoyed the fact you can eat people meat in 2017. I hope that makes it into the SA. Even just people who are either totally starving (Alive style) or have very low humanity.

I agree, I watched a brief update about DayZ on a Australian gaming show called Good Game. All they mentioned was the private/modded hives and how much they loved the ones with 200+ vehcles and more military bases/loot. Then in the next breath said they can't wait for the SA - I think there is a bit of a disconnect.

The current build isn't ready for gameplay testing yet.

I didn't think it was even gameplay testing we was doing... just stress tests on the multiplayer architecture?

Well we've done some capacity testing already, I assume the next phase will be more of a 'making sure everything works' type deal to make sure we don't end up with a WarZ Steam release type fiasco, lol.

Oh sweet.

Looking forward to that, then!

(the testing, not the WarZ)

I actually can.

In my opinion. Ammo is far to common at the moment.

I usually find 20-30 AK mags, before I even see my first AK. Going to Cherno with your military weapon will never cause you to run out of bullets.

There are a few things about Standalone, that makes me think this will change in the future.

a) you will be required to load ammo into mags, hopefully you will have to find the mags too. This could cause problems with ammo, if you only have 1 mag, that needs manual refill once unloaded.

B) destructible gear once shot upon. Like mentioned, it would give an argument not to shoot.

c) Infections that might be on clothes you pick up of players, might have an increased chance when the clothes are bloody, so shooting someone for his clothes will be a worse option, than robbing him.

d) Environmental effects, Infection, Disease, are all risks that will come in addition to what we all know now. Having to take care of your injury or disease for several hours, just because you wanted to kill that noob and he got a lucky shot, will cause people to think twice before approaching.

e) Server-spawned and controlled zombies with improved pathfinding, that will roam through the forests

I really hope that these things will play out the way I imagine them. I hate it, when I avoid players to immerse into the feeling of things being rare, just to have that player running straight at me, spraying his AK in my direction, the second he sees me.
