DayZ Developer Blog 8th March

as far as I remember Rocket said that this will be in :)

I'd hope it would bear a negetive trait to it though... Like, you can eat it whatever your humanity is, although it will give you the shakes really badly if you it/eat too much of it. That seems to be a popular notion of cannibalism (if it's true or not, I don't know..)

Hi all i'm new, sorry for my english.

Well, i think the SA will be great but i can't hide my delusion for several things. I mean, i've seen so much to understand that we will play a dayz mod with more cool stuff and bug fixes instead of a revolutionary zombie game.

It seems that rocket and his stuff didn't want to risk rewriting the game totally, or maybe, they no have the abilities to do that, or the "rights" if you understand what i mean...

If i was "the dayz mod creator" and if i saw such an enormous feedback from people, i would have looked everywhere for partners, investors, using all the energy for a more ambitious project, not just an upgrade for fans. You can't use again the arma 2 engine, really, for me this is a bad choice. And more important, Chernarus again? Ok you added new areas, but for god sake, you have the chance to create the greatest game ever, and you just don't waste 1,2,or more years to build an entirely new structure/enviroment. And this is not a money problem, this is because you don't want to...unbelievable for me

Sorry, i know that it's easy to speak in a forum and the facts are other things but believe me, i loved the mod, i love and accepted all bugs because i know it was a beta. Now, a year later, like other people said before me, i see the game taking another direction. Anyway, i will play the game and buy it, but maybe i was expecting something different, i don't understand of this rush.

This is what i think

I think the fundamental point people are making... is that as more layers of survival mechanics are added... people will have less time/desire to do all the dumb things that people hate about DayZ in its current state. Rocket has said this in previous statements and I am looking forward to seeing it come to fruition.

For example, if I have to mind, manage, and account for...

- Diseases (treatment and prevention)

- Zombies (threatening, numerous, and damaging)

- Sustainability (food and shelter)

- Weather (self-explanatory)

- Ammunition (scarcity and differentiation from magazines)

- General Scavenging (weapons and support items for the above)

- etc.

... I will have far less time/desire/capability to just go deathmatch. Deathmatching will no doubt still occur, and I love the tension that PvP brings to Day Z... but I think most players that aren't trolls will agree that it shouldn't be the sole focus of Day Z. Nor that PvP should be the unchallenged alpha-threat to player health.

It really is exciting seeing the old mantra of "complex = better" game philosophy coming back to life in Day Z (complex =/= complicated).

yap this has been discussed a while ago and I would love to see this implemented ..imagine you meet another player and see his getting the shakes ( like in the Book of Eli)

...

A project like the game you describe would cost millions to develop. A map that has the scale and level of detail of chernarus, would take years to build in the first place.

The more your project is ambitious, the more chances it has to become a vaporware. And developing a game takes more than just money, it takes a vision and talented people that knows how to work together. I guess Bohemia have it all, and they're going to make DayZ a fantastic game.

EDIT : remember rocket wants to manage our expectations to avoid killing the servers when it's released... which means there is probably a lot more exciting stuff to chernarus plus than what was announced for the moment :)

Yep, we don't want another SimCity (I know it had other issues go away) on our hands.

snip

just to add, after your character has managed and survived all that, you will think twice, nay, five times before engaging someone...

this will be exactly like sim city. rocket insists that only a select few test

with a game like this, its going to be a disaster at launch unless they release the alpha for proper testing

Well, SimCity did release as a full game and then it damn better work. Since this will be released as an alpha the same rules won't apply. :)

I think the plan is to have it indicated somehow in-game but how they're going to do that is still either being worked on or super secret. All I would say though is that it won't involve health bars as far as I know.

Roger, we will probably have ingame displays of "major" stuff, like sneezing, vomiting, fainting, fever, coughing...

But for less obvious stuff, we will do something more like space station 13 and provide textual feedback that doesn't necessarily say the exact problem, such as:

Your stomach is rumbling

Or;

You feel light headed

Absolutely this.

The intention is to give a vague feeling to the decisions one might be faced with in real life. The mechanics, for example, of how you get sick from eating the wrong food are really complicated - but we don't model those. The interactions that cause it in game are complex but the players don't actually need to know and "game" those - they just play using real-life common sense.

you could add these systems also for a more complex mechanic-system. (a way to add subtle "microskills" btw ;))

Why do you need ingame displays for sneezing, vomiting..etc? To me, those things should be audio/visual and not displayed on the hud.

hunger --> sound of your stomach

thirst --> sound of your mouth, you eventually make when it is dry (i really don't know the proper word for this "dry-mouth-munching" :P)

Going back to the 'celebrity youtuber' thing, one thing I would say is that it was youtubers that led me to DayZ in the first place (Seannnners of all people) and youtubers that encouraged me to download the mod (from watching he who shall not be named).

Youtubers are good at voicing opinions, questions etc. They don't get camera-shy either and are good at ad libbing.

I tend to give any kind of 'celebrity' a swerve unless I actually find some use from their work.

And Rocket, as you're about :D ..... Immersion-wise has anyone ever suggested removing the ability to see how many other players are currently on a server? I play differently depending on how many others are on at the same time.

I think he meant sneezing/vomiting etc. will be represented in-game by animations, but more subtle things like feeling feint will be represented by text, lol. xD

some things could be "checked" by pressing a button. Press "X": anim with raised hands in FOV "i look pale" or anim with shaking hands or anim with hand touching head " i'm feverish..."

if things are really obvious anims could automatically be triggered; ???? --> text appears ("you feel sick") --> player starts vomitting -->player presses "X" which triggers the anim where the player checks his head "seems that i have a fever..." ---> conclusion: ???? = bad food ergo food poisoning

To change the topic slightly...

For the next devblog they I'd like to suggest some participants:

Jack Frags, Boo and (for the hard of hearing) Rhinocrunch.

Think it's be a good and opiniated group to include.

I prefer it if that SausageKing guy was in it. He's swell.
