Interview with Matthew Lightfoot

Recommended Posts

Great interview. Content-wise I am a little bit disappointed.

Like stuff that I would consider extremely basic and therefore important to fix before the initial alpha release aren't coming till later. This includes

1) Zombie AI [and more different types of Zombies]

2) Walking down/up hills and stairs behaviour

3) Indoor walking behaviour / moving around corners => Currently it's simply shit

4) Player skeleton => Please fix before release. Getting killed by doors... srsly, that's not something that should be postponed.

All these things I consider basic, because that is stuff everyone has to deal with by the first minute of gameplay and thus jugdes the quality of improvements made based on what they experience the most.

Love the new information, thanks all for the hard work.

Sadly, I have to agree with this post. If avoiding the initial rush of people complaining about the quality of the game is a priority, especially after the [game that shall not be named] fiasco, things like this should be very high on the list, and a definite before release.

Phooey I was amazed at your question. Dayz has always been a survival game and never a PvP with zombies! :o That's why I raised my question during our interview with Matt.

Lots of good info there, Thank you for this.

One thing Im unsure of though.. is there going to be more of an incentive or are they going to promote more cooperation in the game. Dont get me wrong, I know this is a PvP game, but it sounds like they are really trying to make it a zombie survival game not just PvP with some zombies in it. I just wonder what or how that is going to be accomplished.

Also when he was talking about the inventory system he compared it to the original resident evil. I havent played that, but it kind of sounded like diablo / diablo 2's Anyone whose played both.. am I right in thinking that?

Awsome day of info today, wow, really just wow.

the thing i am most interested in the standalone is how they manage survivor interactions...

if it is possible to make bases where survivors can stroll around, talk, trade... especially a holster weapon feature would be absolutely necessary if you want to be in a friendly enviroment.

imagine a base controlled by a clan of like 10 people, all armed, letting people in aslong as they look healthy and holster their stuff... and interveining if a survivor pulls out a pistol or something...

a base could not only serve as a safe harbor, but it also might allow sanitary installations, such as toilets so that shitting on the ground and infesting other people would not have to happen, also using showers to remove potential contaminaton on the body.

and imagine finding single bullets, which you can stuff in your mag. not only would a magazine system make ammo conversion alot more realistic, but it could be used as a currency for trading...

i really hope they focus on such stuff aswell, because this is one of the things allowing "friendly" players to socialize...

Well what "they" need to realize is that people asking about it is a good thing for them, it shows interest and it shows that when they do get the game out these people are going to give them their money. And the forum admins need to understand that this forum right here is the best place in the whole wide world to ask about such things instead of telling them in big bold caps to stfu.

When and where has anyone been told stfu?

Funnily enough the Forum mods and Day Z Devs do understand this is the best place to get information - hence the Q&A with Matt.

I got killed by my first tree yesterday while looting my tent, brutal... -8k blood in seconds.

Probably wont play the mod again due to this so it is indeed high high priority if it is going to stop people bothering to play when hours of work can but ruined by a "£$% off tree

A friendly warning, don't listen to the interview while you're on Teamspeak yourself, I had to alt-tab a couple of times, because "someone entered my channel" or "posted in chat." :)

Sorry I wasn't being literal, I'm talking about page one post one with all the giant caps and exclamation marks and the "they said don't ask" post on the previous page ..... not good.... and in my opinion may as well say "STFU"

Griff, Lovely accent mate and to the lady mod you should start singing bedtime lullabys (: cant wait till SA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks! *sings* Dooby dooby doooooo....

Good questions mods, although I am disappointed none of you asked about my custom Ben Franklin skin. Derpy you asked about muffins (important I agree) but left out ol' Ben? Tisk tisk!

The only thing that made up for it was Sula's angelic voice. Sula one day please just jump in TS and say "Mr. Franklin you've been a very naughty poster!" ;)

That's very kind of you, thank you. You should come see what they make me say at Balota Buddies on teamspeak! I have to say things like "Coming up on our right we can see Elektro..." and "Press 4 for Cherno...." All day long!

I have to fend off Fraggle and 'hooves on a daily basis and the rest of the mods keep trying to sidle up next to me. Funnily enough, Sula avoids me completely.

Good question about loot farming. A question for the next meet perhaps?

Rgds

LoK

That's only because I can't get near to you for all the guys ask you to tell them stories! Sing me song, Mr Orlok, please! :D

And I just wanted to say, I thought all the mods had great voices. I know that sounds like I cop out but I really did.

18 euros? You gotta be kidding me...

Would you like to expand on your comment.

Matt said between 15 & 20 €, therefore 18€ is a happy medium.

This is the price of the Foundation build, the price of the full game will most certainly be in line with market prices.

Is there any word on whether the slightly glitchy access to tents will be fixed for the foundation release?

Yours, the sad owner of an awesomely hidden tent packed with loot just outside Elektro that he can't get access to any more.

Wasn't it supposed to be Minecraft model pricing? (for those who dont know Minecraft did cost 9.95€ pre-alpha stage.)

So basically that's nearly twice as much, i'm not saying that's too much but it's another Rocket's fuck up.

Even if we take the price from he's twitter pic ( https://pbs.twimg.co...Ac2Dx.jpg:large ) 15$ = around 11€.

And Minecraft which has been released costs 19.95€ , which is almost price for the DayZ pre-alpha, sorry but am I missing something?

So released game will probably cost like 40€, that's hardly Minecraft pricing model for me. Rather EA pricing model.

I guess that's what he mean't.

Yes you are missing something. You appear to have misunderstood. You refer to something called "pre-alpha" but we are already at alpha stage and that remains free. The reference to Minecraft was to its pricing structure and as an indictation of price. In other words, an initial price that is small and then going up in price with time and development.

The rough estimate of price Matt gave is for the first release of the stand alone game, not for an alpha or beta test version. So I don't see how you can try to blame Rocket for a "fuck up" when you're the only one making one.

If you don't understand just ask questions and we can provide answers. You'll get more positive replies that way.

A toilet system in a base that gets around disease would be a cool thing to add into the game...could set up a public toilet base and charge people for entry!

I hope underground bases consist of a hole, some timbers and a tarp over the top.

James Bond Villain super bases seem a tad unreal. Working toilets? A hole and some lime sprinkled over it would be the limit.

If people think they and 10 people will be able to construct the Umbrella Corps underground lair i fear they could be disappointed.

I do think folk have to stop taking the dev's or our words so literally. People will only end up dissapointing themselves.

Sooo... You are thinking of adding toilet animations... Does that mean I have to remember back to my old army days when we had to do the "One Finger Ass-wiping" with one square of toilet tissue?

This!! the famous "make that one sheet into a tiny square, place on finger tip and make sure it's the most accurate wipe of your life!!" Drill, oh how i loved field exercises!

I know i am soo sorry, (Can't remember if custom skins were asked) I had barely the time to ask for muffins... and yes that was a serious question lol!

Yeh, soz, it'll be muted next time. Initially it was just gonna be a meeting to fill us in. It was a last minute idea to record questions and answers so we didn't really think about it TBH.

Yeah last minute thing, suppose we arranged our Recording in the same manner some other game company arranged their product...

Sorry for any typos or lack of sense, at my mothers and the cat is wrapped round my leg letting out pittiful meows.... distractions!
