    Lets talk persistence.

Well, everything is a bit subjective and depends largely on personal experience. I believe if had DayZ team had more experience they would have seen the problems ahead of time and taken action to solve them first. Had they had a clear vision and goals for DayZ, they would have understood that their current technology is obsolete, enforcing unnecessary limitations and makes it difficult to create a game they want. Thus we would hopefully avoid having to rewrite rendering and animation parts of the engine 2 years after development. Ah, I get so frustrated thinking about it I want to bang my head on the table. First you design and plan for all the features you want to implement. Then you look at the technology you have at hand. Make a choice, do you cut features or create new technology. This is how you should work and what have they done instead? "Oh we will just take everything from the mod and put it in its own game separate from Arma 2, brush up on anti-cheat protection and release it, will only take something like 3 month". Later on they tell us that "We had some difficulties and decided to rewrite the whole engine to make a better game". Even further down the road "We've rewritten the net-code part of the game and added new server architecture, but we completely broke our server performance". Now we get stuff like "We must rewrite the rendering system bla bla bla". Two words, just two words to describe this... production method: Lack of planning. Junk items are useless, they are garbage, they populate the game, they populate the database and we don't need junk to eat up server performance. Of course they will probably have a future use, wrenches are going to be needed for vehicle repair. Screw driver can be used to open cans at the moment and will probably be used for other things too. But look, we have disinfectant in the game that does nothing except make people sick. Why not tie it up to a survivor function like when you use a machete to kill a zombie, it becomes dirty and requires to be disinfected before you open cans or cut meat with it. Bam, game play value. To be honest, I know charcoal tablets server some kind of game mechanic, but am unsure what. All I remember that when you eaten rotten fruit you would get sick, charcoal tablets supposed to make you better but they didn't. In fact, before when you used to eat them, you actually would get sick. I was not surprised that zombies did not work at the release of the game, but I do feel unsettled when after two years of development zombies are still not working. They are a core element of the game play! Please go read post mortem of Diablo 2 as they explain that they strived to get a working version of monsters into the game as soon as possible. Well the devil is in the details, isn't he? I called these things small because I consider base building, vehicles and persistence much bigger tasks than getting core concepts in working order. I do get your point and I feel really dirty for "ranting" about DayZ progression, but hopefully you understand that I am really passionate about DayZ and hate reading in the news how some second rate competitor (ala WarZ ala Infestation: Survivor Stories) makes money on someone else's original idea. Now we have h1z1, which I shamefully have to admin, looks more polished than DayZ. I mean, looking at the current loot iteration, I bet they don't even have a clue on how to make it work. Deans talk about hive based loot tables and restrictions makes me feel like he is fluttering somewhere in the skies believing he is making an MMO with two million subscribers. They need to take a page or two out of original mod and its version, and remember what made the game so good. Then plan ahead, plan for everything, even their backup plan has to have a backup plan.

    Lets talk persistence.

Why persistence so soon? I think the main reason is that people keep whining they wanted it. (I remember back in December, the alpha had just been released, and the forums was flooded with "Where are vehicles? Where are the tents?" etc, and the first answer was "Were gonna try and make backpacks persistence first, then add tents, fridges, etc." The good side is that they can get data from this and balance the system. The bad side is the bugs/crashes it provokes. Personally I don't mind at all. They can do whatever they want to make DayZ better. It's sad that we're living in the era we're in, cause I wish we could go back to the age people didn't have access to unfinished games. I love having a chance to see the progression and various stages of development, I always did. But it just slows down development process as they make a playable version of their software too early. The world wasn't prepared for that. Thus the 80% of the community whining about anything and everything. My humble opinion.

    Lets talk persistence.

Stable is still alpha, it's still testing. IMO they should push shit onto stable faster than they are, because they usually try to get things working on experimental for a month before throwing it on stable just to have it break again. I think the devs already make a huge mistake in not treating stable as a real testing ground, and trying too hard to make things "nice" before putting it on there and I think as a result players have adopted a bad attitude of expecting things to work once on stable. It's a completely different beast. I know it gets thrown around all over to the point of not carrying any weight. But this is what the alpha is for. It's not like they didn't do what you're suggesting. They tested it internally, they tested it on experimental and now it's being tested on stable. Because they have to do it sooner or later, it's going to break things regardless of when they do it. Why not do it now, when persistence is such an integral part of the experience. Barricading and vehicles are reliant on persistence to be meaningful in any fashion. Loot economy is also heavily affected. They should have had persistence in even sooner honestly. Alpha is for throwing systems in, later they refine them. Those basic game play mechanics (I assume you mean stuff like zombies/melee and all those sorts of "little" things) can all be tweaked down the line. A lot are also heavily influenced by server performance. What's the point of optimizing systems around server performance just to throw the entire thing heavily out of wack with the introduction of persistence at an even later date? It hurts, but it has to be done. Get the hard shit over with now, not later.

Dean Hall on Vehicles and Barricading

I don't think they will manage vehicles well in the first 10 iterations. Remember what happened in vanilla DayZ? NO SERVERS had vehicles, they where all hoarded and hidden some place on the map. If you was lucky enough to find a broken down vehicle, you needed to look all over the place to find spare parts. You needed wheels, engine, scrap metal, fuel tank, jerry can and maybe a bit of glass. Now Dean "Rocket" Hall talks about tripling the amount of parts you need for a vehicle. It was difficult enough to collect parts to repair vehicle in vanilla DayZ and keep your vehicle well maintained. But with this new system it feels like they want to make vehicle ownership a complete nightmare and a chore. I am convinced that developers of standalone are determinate to prove you wrong on this one. But you know what they say about hope, it dies last. Here is a prime example of hope, some optimistic individuals still believe that Relic can bring balance to Company of Heroes 2, hah! I was only considering the KoS situation from a different point of view, while doing so I kinda ended up taking this point of view. In reality am the opposite of cold and calculating, I always try to avoid KoS when possible. Yesterday I met another new spawn and really wanted to try stun baton on him, cuff him and molest him, but ended up helping him out and explaining game mechanics. Besides we both entered Solnichniy and there was abundant amount of loot, more than enough for both of us (Birthday party bug). During my DayZ epoch time I was a big damn hero type. Why? Just because something is better than something else why should it be restricted? Look, making certain loot like night goggles, range finder and SD weapons spawn only on helicopter crash sites was a bad thing in the vanilla mod. It made these items very rare and finding them as an average player were nearly impossible. SD weapons was completely useless as it was nearly impossible to find magazines for them or the complete opposite like when you could find STANAG SD mags on hunting stalls, but impossible to find a rifle that could use these mags. As you progress deeper inland you should be able to find better gear, what is the point of walking for miles if when you arrive at a military base and find the same gear you found at the coast? At the same time time rare content should be common enough to make using it meaningful or would you rather promote people into hoarding rare weapons and ammo and never using it? Another important thing is for servers to be self-sufficient and have working loot re-spawn mechanics capable of servicing 30 to 50 players within short period of time. If there is less than 20 players on the server, that means they will have abundance of loot. On the other hand if the server is full up to 50 player, they might have to start fighting each other even over cans of beans. When loot is picked up by a player, that loot is no longer part of the server eco-system, it belongs to the player, not the hive or the server. New loot has to be introduced on the server to prevent loot starvation and migration between servers. At the same time, if well geared player joins a server, it should not affect how much loot is spawned.
  5. if you aren't used to do exercise sure you can shatter your leg, but die? Sure you can get hit by someone (zombie in this case) and bleed, specially if they bite you, but die from bleeding by being bite by a someone with human traits and human teeth? not likely. Getting infected, feeling worse, those are acceptable. Dying? come on. I maintain what I said. There's no survive here. You just go fine and dandy until something happens and then you die. Saying this is a survival is ironic at its best. I want to play and find people missing some fingers of a hand, or an eye, or with a smashed and permament injured knee, making them unable to run not for a period of time but forever until they die (though I understand having these before vehicles would be gamebreaking), Or find people deaf from one ear because he got bite by a zombie and the wound got infected. But for this to happen, first we need some mechanics when if things go wrong (not to much tho), you can manage to survive...or at least whats left of you. Thats survival, apocalyptical & fun. Now its just like any shooter, you just go killing/griefing without any consequences until you die. Binary. No mid term.

Give a man a fish, he'll have food for a day. Teach him how to use the search-function and he will have found the topic in question quicker than typing out those words you just did...http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/202125-dean-hall-on-vehicles-and-barricading/ A search for the video would have sufficed. Literally took me 10 seconds to find it - and that's on an iPad. I have not been condescending. I have been pointing directions. Do you think your teacher is condescending? It's his job. Speaking of doing my job: Merged.

    Respawning randomly near city choice

The general spawn locations are fine, IMO. They should, perhaps, add many more of them around the whole coast. Also, you should spawn in a safe location. Buildings/vehicles/hospital beds.
  8. Wow total survival experience! Lots of military vehicles w/ ammo (mostly). If you know how to play this game then this server is for you! I started out with a pistol and 2 days later Im set up with a base and a few armored vehicles. AI are in towns waitin to kill you!! Missions are tough so you might want to bring a couple of friends! This server is awesome you have to be on the look out ALL the time!
  9. Hi guys, im letting you know that the NCR has been shut down and the clan is no longer active. (You can probably realize that because your applications are being ignored) A couple of retired members from it and the owner are playing on http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/213130-ft-fire-turtles-overpochnapfcustom-scriptsextra-vehicles/ which is an overpoch NAPF server. More clans join everyday and if your looking for something to join you might find in there. Thank you.
  10. CLAN INFORMATION: The =167= Clan is actively recruiting new troops to join the fight in Chernarus! We are a US Army based clan that was formed back in 2003 and we have been running strong ever since. We currently have several members who are retired US Army and we are constantly training and utilizing real-world tactics, or modified versions of them. We communicate in Teamspeak while we play DayZ, and when we split up, we go into separate channels so we can communicate the little things with our squadmates, such as "Zombie to your 11 o'clock." and "Do you have any water?" without interfering with another squad who may be operating 5 km away. We have whisper lists setup in Teamspeak so that we can communicate cross-channel to the other squads when necessary. Think of this as a two-way radio. When we communicate cross-channel we utilize call signs, code words, and phrases to give a more realistic feel to the game play. This will be especially impressive when we start pumping out videos. We are much more than just some friends playing games. We have plenty of structure, opportunity for advancement, and we treat each other like family. Here are just a few reasons why you should join =167=: Solid Leadership. We've been running for 11 years and our leaders have accumulated quite a bit of knowledge and experience along the way. We also have a very extensive week-long leadership training program that all officers must attend. Teamwork. We train our members to work together as a cohesive unit by promoting teamwork and selfless service. We will often recognize clan members for performing outstanding activities that positively affect their team, even if these activities are out of the limelight. Member Recognition. We are always on the lookout for members doing outstanding deeds. We have custom-made ribbon awards which we issue for a broad range of things including attending training, performing service to the gaming community, volunteer efforts among the clan, and much more. We also publicly recognize members and their accomplishments through promotion in rank and delegation of responsibility. Hassle-Free Organized Structure. The =167= Clan has always had a very organized, military-like structure. This can be a huge benefit for those who wish to advance in rank, learn how to lead, and take command of groups. However, there are people who wish to come online, play with their clan, then log off with no more responsibilities than being a team player. We understand and respect this fact. We will never pressure members to advance in rank or take a responsibility that they don't want. Good Times with Great People. Everyone in =167= comes on to have fun and enjoy each others company. The environment in Teamspeak is very friendly, and usually involves a lot of laughing and people having a good time. We can get pretty serious when we need to be, especially during a firefight, but everyone treats each other with respect and has a good time, whether we're horsing around or we aren't. Does this sound like a good time to you? Do you have what it takes to join =167=? What do you have to lose? Find out more and join the family! Is it time to come back?

The dev tracker linked to a reddit post about a month ago... I don't remember who said it but it was something like this. The team is working on a new AI sensor method that will be at engine level. The current AI sensors are at script level so they are both performance hungry and not very flexible. Once the new sensors are in place they expect to support a large amount of all AI types that will enable stealth gameplay in a great way. They also suggested the goal is thousands of zombies per server. So if the new sensors, vehicles, and barricading are in place for the holidays, dayz will probably hold steam #1 sales even through the steam winter sale. My most anticipated feature is zombie bears. The devs have never even confirmed it but you dont see me raging. (Yet)

Dean Hall on Vehicles and Barricading

I will copy-paste what I said in a different thread that was basically identical to this one. I have to say this, in terms of trashed vehicles on the map there should be a crap load of them. I mean vehicles that cannot be repaired at all, there needs to be way more apocalyptic details like that in the setting for the game because right now, and I think anyone would agree, you just don't get that feeling whatsoever. The map is huge so the entire map doesn't need to feel like an isolated 3rd world farmland, add in a highway and put some trashed cars on it. As far as how many working vehicles should be on the map, 10 is ridiculous and so is 20. This map is absolutely huge, and if somebody finds a vehicle knowing they are so few in numbers the potential for griefing the entire server by hiding it someplace ridiculous is extremely high. If they are persistent like tents are, the potential for griefing would be astounding. I watched that video, dean wants the vehicles to be super rare and all that, but I don't agree. Transportation in a game like this should not be rare. Nobody wants to play a running simulator, its just boring. If they keep making everything so frustrating and annoying, I feel like a majority of players who want to play this game are not going to. I mean my time is valuable and I want to have a good time in a game, not be harassed by its bad mechanics. As far as using the walking dead as an example, it would be the most accurate representation of this though. I think they're hell bent on making their game the most boring thing in the world to play or something though. I really don't know what their deal is with this whole rarity thing. I understand you want the player to have some sense of dread for surviving any situation especially when they find something rare, but honestly... you always have that sense while playing anyway. Just make the game fun to play. I'm not asking for 500 cars, but 20 is way too few. Also please make the game look and feel more apocalyptic. Right now everywhere just looks completely normal, like nothing bad happened anywhere. As far as hopping for car parts goes or making this some kind of group activity thing, that is so far from realistic its not even funny. First of all, vehicles are bullet magnets. A clan isn't going on a public server, find a car and then start huddling up in it so they can get sniped like imbeciles. If they make it this rare, smart people will use them as kill bait. I think this developers perspective is a little warped on the reality of making these cars so rare. Rarity means nothing in a game like this. It doesn't matter if you find an M4 assault rifle or a crappy 22 pistol, if you get the jump on somebody before they see you it doesn't matter what gun you have. The same thing applies to all rarity aspects in a game like this. The moral of this story is this. Rarity means NOTHING in a game where you lose all your crap when you die. All rarity does is make the game boring to play. If you can't understand that, you can't be helped and maybe you shouldn't be working on this type of genre if you don't understand where I am coming from. That goes out to any dev reading this.

Only that this is basically impossible with the connectivity as you can take the SVD from one server and switch to another. I think it mainly means that the loot economy is far from moving to the "hive level" yet but every limited item ultmately needs to be limited per hive (depending on the number of servers/players). Exception are non-switchable items like vehicles but here it would also improve the game if not every server had the same numbers and types. In fact server quantity control is one of the basic steps to hive quantity control. First by allowing it to happen in the first place - hive quantity control would probably work by permitting a random* server to spawn an item - which means the server now controls the quantity. The feedback would be tracking of rare items which is basically the other part (probably much easier as items are storged inside the database already). The final part are some security measures: How to prevent people from picking up an item, logging off and newer coming back? How to prevent one server from getting all the good stuff? And so on. Especially the second question can be answered by server quantity control as well - if a server already has a lot of those limited items it won't spawn any more of them and in turn not accept any permission to do so. *Pseudo-random, weighted and maybe fullfilling some conditions though.

The future mod of Dayz SA that will become the new SA

I still have my hopes set for HollywoodZ based on Demon Groovers brilliant mod section. All buildings explode when four or more characters exit causing 0 damage.Ammunition is never found or reloaded. All vehicles have a max speed of 88mph.Bandages are never applied as bleeding out is physically impossible. There are over 500 options to escape but you are always 20 seconds short of leaving Chernarus. There is only one zombie on the server that is forced to walk, however he comes back every 15 minutes to chase you regardless of distance covered prior.Every car that escapes your gun shots can be chased down and destroyed by lighting a match to a petrol trail.Steak.

Is it time to come back?

Vehicles were slated for release if everything goes well , for Christmas :) ... Also zombies DO roam randomly , but for now they have a set area to roam which is rather small , leaving them to roam the same hill .. But again by Xmas I think we will see another advancement of ai (including zombies) . "Placeholder loot" you speak of , well I wouldn't call that place holder as my suspicion of the devs purposely turning off water wells so we would have to drink the natural water which in turn could be the start to disease contracting , could be right ... I hope they are really adding diseases very soon like my paranoia believes , as it would make use of these "placeholder lewtZ" to become incredibly useful . Waiting to play dayz so I must discuss :) .

This is a terrible idea quite simply.. As if the server hopping crap isn't bad enough, now people will be jumping to other servers because of rumours of heli's or other vehicles. I want to play on one server, have a "community" as such build up inside that server, maybe even get to know people on it and the such like. As someone else said, the mod had this perfectly. Yes you had to hunt around for parts, but everything you required was available on the server you were on. Why would you possibly encourage someone to server hop for potential parts? Like I said, I want to stick with one server, one where my base/tents or whatever there is eventually is all setup. Why would you encourage people to leave the server they play on for this? It makes no sense and is truly idiotic. The map is big enough to have potential spawn points for every potential vehicle part (Car parts in gas stations, repair shops, workshops, barns etc. Heli parts at the various air fields and hangars.) So why have this crazy, convoluted system of finding certain parts? Me and the people I play with don't want to server hop, we want to play on a particular server and build up a rapport and knowledge with the other people on that server. Not have to jump round 30-40 servers just to find a rotor blade for a god damn helicopter. Totally unrealistic and totally ridiculous in my opinion.

Perhaps once vehicles are included, you could connect larger electronic devices like radios to car batteries. I think it'd add quite a lot to the game.

Even without the global restriction you would server jump to that server to acquire that helo, would you not? This does not change anything about how to acquire this and why it should be globally restricted. I still stand by my point, that you wouldn't know where to acquire the part other than stripping other people's vehicles, thus not creating an incentive to server hop.

Is it time to come back?

Oh poor you, did you get shot by a hacker two months ago and now are back to express how bad you suck at staying hidden ? Lol if you're a complainer like this guy has always been id say wait until vehicles are in cuz that's all these complainers want ... But on the real flip side , horticulture and barricading is in although simple right nOw , temperature is in but it's an extreme WIP , military guns are more scarce but guns and ammo are every where , persistence works on most servers and will work 100% within this month I can guarantee it ... Degradation of items coming very soon as on this patch everything is pristine so they must be preparing for something .. Tents do work and are in the game don't listen to the kids that get butt hurt simply because their tent disappeared because they didn't test the server they were on first before plopping down their favorite item lol ... Cooking and trapping is still basic but yet we already have a better trapping mechanic than in the mod lol , and I can guarantee you that we will have a much more advanced cooking system in beta .. Oh and I don't know about you guys but I've never had experiences on dayz mod like I do on dayz standalone , the player to player interaction is by far wayyy better in standalone than in the mod for many reasons : standalone has handcuffs giving more than enough reason to take someone Alive. Standalone has only direct chat forcing people to talk while in front of each other not over side chat so anyone can talk to anyone on the server without being close to one another .. Standalone is way more balanced than the mod , in the mod all you have to worry about after a gunfight is "did I get hurt, did my car get shot ?" .. In standalone it's more like that PLUS : "shit did my backpack or any of my items become useless ? Did I break my arm ?" Which creates a much more valid excuse to leave a town when spotting someone else as opposed to just fighting them like in the mod .. So my suggestion to all of you , If you're not into human interaction , attention to detail, and a real survival experience with temperature involved (mods temperature system sucked you only got cold in the water and you never get hot ) then I guess the mod is for you because you can just drive vehicles and make bases. But if you've played the mod for years like me and have realized that it's not going ANYWHERE because of all the limitations of being a mod , and simply because the mods are always more pvp oriented rather than survival oriented then stick with dayz standalone , it will have vehicles and base building within the next few months ... Vehicles are closer to being implemented than base building but still base building is not far off. But go play dayz mod for now if you can't stand the glitches and constant re-balancing that is guaranteed to happen with an Alpha , you'll only see yourself addicted to dayz standalone come Christmas/ New Years time when everything is in and semi - balanced .
  21. Part 4 is up. We took a bit of time with this one, and we like how it turned out. There's a lot of quality scenes, downing an Osprey and Little bird with M136 Rocket launcher, blowing up people in their vehicles with M136 and lots of other crazy stuff. Check it out.

Dean Hall on Vehicles and Barricading

Listen to what Dean Hall has to say about vehicles... (The topic starts at 0:52) http://youtu.be/dFgkbXul3K4 -The idea to achieve vehicle parts through "server hopping" is very bad and very unrealistic. -Mod was a LOT MORE realistic in this particular matter. Cause when in your right mind will you want to go to a server to find a part with a very big chance of getting killed, and in the end if you survive go back to the 1st server where you left the vehicle welcome to everyone to steal for the time of your absence. Now you find yourself driving and a freshspawn comes out of nowhere and just KOS-s you right as you drive past him. -I wish they do the vehicles just like in mod. Simple and fun. But of course the developers have to complicate cause they are not watching it from the players perspective. WHY??? -I don't think players have the time or patience to do this bull****. -And in the end not everyone has a clan to go grab parts FROM ONE SERVER TO ANOTHER. This is very dementing and frustrating cause when will a lone-wolf be able to get parts for himself then? All the statements indicate how bad actually the idea is. Devs are just focusing on adding things THEY think are good, but they are not listening to the community. They guys who pay them. They should make vehicle parts more like it was in mod. Go around scattering until you gathered all the right ingredients. I think a lot of you will agree with me on this one.
