DayZ Standalone Confirmed

Recommended Posts

You do realise of course that DayZ development as mod will die pretty quickly even though they claim it will still be supported. It will get half attention straight away because of it becoming 2 projects instead of 1 and then since the standalone won't be free, it will get all the focus and pretty soon. Just watch the space. It is indeed the end of the beginning which was the DayZ mod.

Not really. It is almost certain, that the standalone version will use the ARMA3 Engine which, to a substantial degree, should be compatible to the ARMA2 Engine, especially when it comes to things done through scripting. As such, a lot of what the DayZ Standalone will do can already be done in ARMA2. What the added code access to the engine does is give the team the ability to fix certain weaknesses that became apparent in the Engine from the new spin DayZ took on it.

Fantastic news - congrats, Rocket and dev team!

However...I fear for my restaurant-quality Heinz beans and savory Coca Cola and Pepsi products. A paid piece of software will surely preclude the use of any real brand names - the only reminder of the way things used to be in this cruel, cruel world. Hmmm, how about making a pitch to these companies for some sponsorship? Can you say product placement? I knew that you could.

I can't bear the thought of dodging sniper fire and zombies, dashing into the Stary Sobor supermarket, excitedly running down the aisle, only to find a sad can of Fred's imitation Pork n' Beans or Zappo Diet Soda. It'd be enough to make me take that sweet, sweet hunting knife I just found and plunge it deep into my neck. Please don't let this happen.

I'm curious about two things:

Is Rocket going to be given a team of coders to work alongside? I feel that the reason the mod is progressing so slowly (I'm sure many other veteran players will agree that it's growing stagnant, what with no real new features forthcoming in the last month or two - and nothing particularly gamechanging since the release of the mod) is because, every time Rocket releases a small new feature he manages to break the pernicious little engine that the mod is run on. Afterwards, he has to spend a good month releasing half a dozen hotfixes to weed out the numerous bugs produced by any minute progress he makes. If a team of other coders familiar with ArmA II/III's engine were working with him, fixing bugs and assisting with new features, development would be much faster.

And, secondly: why will the mod continue to be developed alongside the standalone? Will they be markedly different games? If so, what's the inspiration to continue working on the mod, therefore dividing Rocket's attention between two separate entities? If not, why continue making the mod if the standalone is essentially the same thing?

Ah, well. We'll know in good time, I imagine.

I'm a little disappointed, as both of these questioned are answered in the OP, before you even asked them

Because the mod already has over 1.000.000 unique players. It would be plan stupid to waste that momentum by creating a gap of several months between the last Day Z mod update and the first standalone alpha version.

this announcement is a direct responce to WARZ. its obvious to me.

Rocket has been stating that he was in 'negotiations with different parties' for a standalone DayZ game well before WarZ was even announced. So, not it's not an obvious reaction to WarZ. It's just the announcement of a legal agreeement with BI he has been working on for a couple of weeks. Edited by madball

Is it going to be the same engine, or a new one, perhaps a heavy modded version of the current one?

do we even know what engine he's using, everyone keeps saying arma 3 engine but if its stand alone he might be moving away from arma... Arma 2 engine was such shit god only knows if 3 will be any good.

The new Arma 3 engine is an updated version of the Arma 2 engine. What I've read they will be using the Arma 3 engine.

I live half under a rock, and I know that there are videos out there showing stuff from Arma III.

This is an instance where an Internet search engine of your choice could provide the answer to your queries.

i didnt mean the standalone was a responce.....Dean has been banging on about a standalone for months.

the official statement is a responce.

and the legal agreement will have been moved forward because of WARZ.

Jesus...

It's not the game that's riddled with hacks, it's the community.

Great news. It would be cool if people that own Arma OA in Steam get a discount on DayZ!
