Dayz Timeline

Recommended Posts

Why on this website does it say the game should be in beta already when i look at the timeline.  It says Q4 2015: Beta release. You guys made millions on this game yet you cant keep up with your own schedule. When you have that much motivation behind the game, with over 2 million sales i find it hard to believe you cant do a better job than what the game is now. I bet this topic will be deleted because negative criticism isn't allowed here. Bohemia I'm never buying any of your games again.

Have you tried browsing the forums to educate yourself about the timeline?  You can find plenty of semi-weekly status reports that give up-to-date reports of what is being worked on, and what the issues/blockers are at the time.

Basically, they greatly underestimated the difficulty of integrating the new engine modules; by 50% or more in many cases.  The problem with this development cycle is that they are changing out the backbone of the game, a few vertebrae at a time, while still allowing " the patient" to walk around and try to live a normal life.  Each new major component of the engine has to be integrated in a way that allows backwards compatibility with the existing tech, and also allow for the newer updated components to be integrated at a future date.  This is no simple task, and likely requires reworking things at every step to agree with the current configuration.  Yes, it adds a lot of time to the development process, allowing us to play while it is in development, but that is the path the game is on.

The good news, is that these changes are two or maybe three patches away from critical mass; once a couple major parts are integrated, the rate of change will increase dramatically.  There has been a lot of work that has been mostly completed and shelfed, awaiting the point when enough new tech has been integrated, to allow these new items an features to be added one, rather than increasing the workload to make each iteration work correctly.  Honestly, I wouldn't expect to see beta until late spring of next year.

I'm not hating or anything, but sometimes question pops up in my mind. If BI's workers are qualified, proffesional game developers, why does it take them so long to for example, intagrate new engine modules. This may or may not be easy, but if they are working non-stop as Hicks says, they should have done this long ago. I mean, if they are educated and qualified for this job, why is it taking it so long? If you are good at something, you should be able to do it quickly, otherwise you aren't qualified for this matter. I know I'm wrong, I just need someone to explain this situation to me.

JustCaused. I would warn you about saying anything that the hordes can mistake as criticism.  They're as vicious as a Reddit community, but with less organization.

If you're good at something you should be able to do it well. Is BI doing a good job? Arguably yes, arguably no.

Criticism is fine. "omg behmia ur a bunch of fucking scamers i want a refund, dean hall can suk my rocket" isn't.

BI should get rid of the timeline. They've already stated that it's no longer accurate to DayZ's development, and hasn't been for a very long time. If it's no longer relevant, it shouldn't be described as such. Having said that, I'm having trouble finding it so maybe they have taken it down.

I kinda feel taken aback at the early access model, I dig dayz, and I dig playing it, but the expectation that the audience will react the way the 'developer' requires, isn't really in line with human nature.

it's like saying "well we should all be nice and have peace, Sure, that makes sense, but then you watch what humans do"

Yup, the model only works fine for the investors. They invest less money in the process, sometimes make an early profit, but the developers suffer making double work (finishing the game and at the same time making it playable), and the players suffer from bugs, unreal expectations, and extreme stress and frustration with the development process.

The Early Access program is still relatively new, and it's really becoming an interesting experiment on human patience and understanding. Many games are in development longer but people just don't see it, but since we get to see this, many people are throwing their hands up and saying, "this is taking too long!" People who know about game development know what a grueling task it is and how finicky of a job coding can be. Then there are those who think it is as easy as building a tower of blocks, and say, "Why aren't the blocks being placed faster?" It's kind of infuriating sometimes, and don't get me started on the Steam reviews. Think of all the stress felt by members of a studio while working on a major project, and all the while they are getting barraged by countless internet strangers. I think for this reason it's important to stay optimistic and patient.

Because development is not always kind or how you believe it to be, you should not base your purchase on a given timeline.

PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE IT UNLESS YOU WANT TO ACTIVELY SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAME AND ARE PREPARED TO HANDLE WITH SERIOUS ISSUES AND POSSIBLE INTERRUPTIONS OF GAME FUNCTIONING.
