Reminder - need to know what server you were last on?

Recommended Posts

The new server browser is a trifle borked, the 'History' tab has always been borked, and at least some of us are having problems with the 'Join Game' feature from the Steam overlay. So this just to remind old and new players how to figure out what server you are on, what server you were last on, and how you can tell other people what server you are on.

Assuming you can alt/tab out, go to your computer's 'Documents' folder, open 'DayZ' and then open the file with your name on it. Not the yourname.var file - just the yourname one.

Either around three fifths of the way down, or towards the end of that file is the name and IP address (the series of numbers ending in :2302 or similar) of the server you last logged into. This is either the one you are in at that moment, or the one you've just logged out of; it's the same thing as far as the file's concerned. (NB this is not the same thing as the shorter sequence of numbers nearby without a port address. That's your own IP number and is useless for these purposes).

If you can't 'Join Game' from the Steam overlay, the fastest way to tell someone else what server you're on is to give them that IP address and they can then put the IP address into their 'Remote' tab in the DayZ server browser.

Alternatively, if you've forgotten what server you're in, or have just been in, this will tell you - so you'll know what server that precious barrel is on...

Once you log in to any new server, the file will overwrite/update to that server. So, at all costs, if you want to know where you just were, do not login to any new server, or the previous one will be lost to history (or buried somewhere deep, deep in your 'History' tab).

This has saved my (tactical) bacon countless times.

useful!

yeah the history tab is kinda useless.  would be better if it only showed your last 3 or something.

Maybe the history tab could be more useful if the records will be provided of a date and time field to be sorted by a "last access" criterion.

I actually take a screenshot sometimes, before connecting to a new server. But this is good advice and great help.

I believe it is newest at the bottom if you don't already have the particular server in your history.

One of the .cfg files also shows the most recent server joined.

The server browser needs a major rework

most important: allow for a quick report function, so that people dont have to go through a complicated form procedure to report abusive servers or servers not sticking to the rules (just look at all the join / kick ones since like forever)

second: make the history tab somewhat useful, so that you can see which server you were last on

third: the friends tab should show which friend is on which server

fourth: when login queues are implemented, length of queue / number of waiting should be displayed
