Shotguns vs SMGs

Recommended Posts

SMGs are more versatile: more ammo, more firerate, it's easier to spray your mag in stress time, more accurate in mid distance

but nothing worth a good sawed shotgun if you want to quietly wait to ambush somebody behind a door

do you like to spray n pray or do you like things that go boom?  Both are good

What would you rather have to do?

One half-ass aimed shotgun spray at close quarters

Or;

Multiple 9mm, well aimed shots at close quarters

Which is why you don't "half-ass" aim with the shotgun.

Besides, with the current clusterfuck that is CQC, it is arguably both easier and more effective to do 'area denial" shots with a shotgun, than try to play catch-up with some guy zipping around

The UMP45 is probably the best of them considering it's a 1-shot kill every time and has a wide range of attachments - only the MP5-K has more. Even with shotguns I've had instances of people surviving at point blank.

However, considering how rare the UMP is I'd say it's really just down to preference between the sawed-off IZH-18 and the MP5K - MP5Ks have a lot of leg room but the sawed-off guarantees a pretty quick kill. The MP133s are alright and in CQB the pistol grip one is better, but the sawed-off is best simply because you have two quick succession shots. The PM73 is worse than the MP5K in nearly every way, and the regular IZH-43 can't be stored in a backpack so there's no use in keeping it for CQB.

Pump shotgun is amazing and various SMGs can get the job done as well. It all is just really up to you on which you feel more comfortable with. Don't let other ppl decide for you. Just pick up what you find and field test both to figure out which one you like the most.

Or just go with a AK 74 U which is pretty much an SMG as well. XD

Give me a sawn-off, a box of shells and some snaploaders and I'm good to go. SMGs aren't really my thing, as others said they're not much use in the laggy mess that is CQC right now, and I'm not a very good shot to begin with.

Sawn-off, but I feel they are mostly useful on servers where you can abuse the third person camera, and catch someone within 10 meters as they come in your direction. Full size double barrel can drop people in one shot to the chest region within 50 meters. Most people greatly underestimate those two weapons. I don't like the SMG's, and especially not with the desync issues going around.

That depends,were the shotguns fixed?

There have been times when i shot someone in the face and he just pretended that nothing happened!

I find the damage to be very inconsistent, sometimes it's a one-shot kill but others not so much.

Due to the facts mentioned above,i would advise you to go with the SMG instead.

Desync is a very big part of the issues people are having with people taking shots like the terminator. Last night I had a fresh spawn come into a building I was chilling in, defending my friends gear. Sprayed something like 10-15 M4 rounds into him as soon as he opened the door, which broke his legs. He then proceeds to crawl towards my friends body, so I gave him another 8-10, well aimed single shots while I was standing over him. During that time he managed to crawl another 2 meters, grab my friends backpack, high cap vest and AK74 before he eventually died.

I could go on and on with examples like this. Emptying an entire SKS into someone within 2-3 meters from you and only making them bleed slightly (while they do the same to you) is a classic example. I personally haven't had issues with the shotguns. The guns I am having the most issues with BY FAR, is the AKM and MP5.

For point blank in their face CQB, the sawed off every day of the week.  Yet outside of that point blank range, the SMG starts to gain in strength.  Honestly, I am more comfortable using a 74U for CQB, just wish it could mount a red-dot sight...

Id have to argue with that just because of game mechanics about how unreliable shotguns are atm. I hit someone point blank range with a shotgun before, yes, killed them. Ive also tried the same thing with other people and barely touched them.

For now, id stick with a SMG. When shotguns are balanced, i flip to close range explosive death once more :)

As a lover of shotguns, who prefers them in all games, and is happy to take a baby two-shot sawed off into the worst situations in DayZ...
I still have an objective opinion on what's good with what:

  • SMGs:

Are good for when you want variety. When you want balance and adaptability in a tight package....in the confines of CQC to medium range.

An MP5k, PM73 RAK, or AKSU, when used right, can be 100% effective in both situations.

In controlled bursts, the SMGs so far are perfectly fine in medium range combat. The RAK is particularly accurate, and the MP5k has a very nice rate of fire. I've taken on several medium ranged situations with an MP5k, and have always come out on top.

As spray-and-pray devices, well... that's kind of what they're meant for. At worst, they are good at suppression.

Shooting near someone actually caused shock damage, and immediately winds them.

And at best, they can fuck up people unprepared, or not fully in cover, with their typically high rate of fire.

Even in spaz out/bad accuracy/"I suck!" moments, once again, the rate of fire, typical to SMGs, gives you a better chance of at least putting a few bullets in someone in a panic.

  • Shotguns:

Do you need someone absolutely dead, or at least fucked up, with the minimum amount of hassle? Shotgun.
That's why I love the shotgun. Not just because it's always easy to use in CQC [sometimes it isn't]. It's just very very reliable in a CQC situation, when you know what your doing, or what needs to be done.

I remember an incident, where I was rolling with a clan. We had a 2 on 2 meeting with a random group of players/scouts heading into our turf. A little standoff outside the Beranzino police station. I forget why we where there and what the negotiation was about, but things went sour.
My Shooter teammate initiated the necessary act of emptying an AK clip into one of our "business partners". As the victim's friend whipped out his automatic, my sawed off came up first, and tore him apart with one shot at that range. Kill confirmed not needed.

I personally find it useful in most situations, due to the reliability. But a good idea of the optimal conditions, and where it has the advantage over the SMG, is that:

You don't need to worry about burst fire, or the rate of fire. One or two shots [even from a pump, especially from a pump] should solve most situations.
e.g. you get the CQC drop on someone. Maybe a bambie is harassing you in the middle of a firefight, or when you're unprepared. A lucky spray might hurt him, or scare him off. But even a single glancing shot of a shotgun will mess him up. A good shot will drop him. Or maybe, you're in a firefight, and get a bit below medium range, and just need to send a shit ton of pellets at someone to suppress them. Iv'e found that when e.g. I'm trying to be friendly, and not kill anyone, that when I am attacked; a few good shotgun blast in the general direction of the offender will scare off people, make them retreat, even people more geared than you. [even if only for a few precious seconds]

My recommendation, is to actually go with a SMG, because of the adaptability, and balance.
