jefc_uk 26 Posted July 10, 2015 (edited) I feel pretty guilty right now. I've been playing for a while and have been killed by survivors 2 or 3 times. I've gotten quite good now at gearing up and staying alive (not that it's particularly difficult in the stable build!) so for the last couple of weeks I've been looking for player interaction. I've had chats with a couple of people and also had one very tense standoff with a survivor in a fire station (I drew blood but ultimately died. I think he was using 3pp to see round the wall. Maybe). So just now I'm on a low population public server looking around the NWAF for some nice bits and pieces and doing some target practise on zombies (or whatever they are). Like an idiot I run out of rounds in my Magnum, and quick bar hotkeys aren't working, so I run and hide in a garage tyoe building. While I'm in there I pop downstairs to get a drink before coming back up to waste that infected bloke. When I come back up I hear automatic fire and no more zombie grunty shuffly noise. Sh!t there's someone out there! So I wait around for a bit then gingerly step out and have a look round. I can see the guy's bright red back pack as he looks around the rooms in one of those long buildings with 4 or 5 rooms and a shower room off to the left. I try to get his attention on text chat ("hello", "thanks for taking out the Z") but maybe I'm too far away). I'm also pretty scared at this point as I'm packing some decent iron by now. I wait outside the single exit door intending to pin him with my Magnum and get him to state his intentions (I'd love to team up with someone as have never done that...) but I lost my nerve and shot the poor b*stard a few times. It was almost involuntary. I am sorry. But I am alive (actually I'm not now, but that's another story...). I checked his pulse and it was still strong so I thought maybe I could help him out but ended up injecting myself with morphine by mistake... Could I have done anything for him after I'd stripped his guns? I really love this game. When I started playing (having got bored of Elite: Dangerous) I thought there wasn't much to do, but fair enough - it's pre-release. But I've put in a fair few hours now and it is SO rewarding. I totally understand now why some people get so disappointed when changes make life easier. The fact it's hard (permadeath) is the one single thing that makes player interactions so intense. That, combined with the fact that early stage gearing up is also fun (anyone else kind of breathe a masochistic sigh of relief when it says 'you are dead'?). Anyway sorry mate. According to the game your name was 'test' but I guess that was a glitch. If it wasn't - well - sh!t name! My stuff (and some of yours!) is at the NWAF in a jail building if you want it. I won't be able to play for a couple of days. Edited July 10, 2015 by jefc_uk
krazypenguin 174 Posted July 10, 2015 (edited) NWAF (and indeed all military locations) are considered KoS areas by about 99% of the player base. Your intention (to make friends) was noble but in the wrong place, barracks are dangerous places. You say you killed him with a Magnum but also that he shot the infected with an automatic weapon of some sort. A Magnum versus an automatic weapon is not good odds so you probably just saved yourself by shooting first. Also, if you really wanted to talk to him why not use voice comms? Broadcasting any sort of message in a military location is very dangerous anyway but if you are going to do it it really has to be voice comms. No one really uses text chat and most people distrust it because the other person could be talking to other players on another chat program and without hearing the human voice and hear all the nuances communication is much harder. Could you have revived him? Yes, but not with morphine, that is for breaks and fractures. You would need to stop any bleeding first (use bandages or rags) then bring him up to health with either blood or saline bags, an epi pen (I think) or just stuff him full of food and water, which can take some time. That said, a military barracks is NOT the place to be reviving random strangers...(though it was a low pop server so you might have been ok). But what if he had friends...etc... Addiction is no fools gold in Chernarus, keep your looting distance from medical facilities for 5 days.
Death By Crowbar 1213 Posted July 10, 2015 A lot of people miss direct chat because usually all that shows up there are status messages that often don't matter or are buggy (I'm shaking when I'm not even cold), server spam (Join our teamspeak, donate, X city is a safe zone!), or BattleEye messages. It was good you at least tried direct chat first, especially if you don't have or can't use a microphone.

jefc_uk 26 Posted July 10, 2015 Trouble is if I get a microphone and start talking into it my partner will definitely know I'm not working! Yeah I don't feel so bad now. I reckon he would have done for me if I hadn't him. Plus it felt really good.

My first kill was on the hill between Myshkino and Pushtoshka. Slow logging in behind a friend. He came upon three heavily armed guys, killed two and got popped by the last. He directed me down to the bodies, where I gut-shot the looting survivor with a repeater as I duck-walked around a tree. He didn't even see it coming until it was too late. Even with my first kill practically handed to me on a silver platter, I don't think my breathing got back to normal until I was past Drozhino carrying my friends gear back to the coast. Ask your doctor about DayZ PVP. If you need to lose weight, and are averse to doing actual cardio, just go to Elektro and let the paranoia work for you. That's what made my trigger finger so itchy I think. I guess that kind of scenario happens in real life too. Deep.
star-lord252 83 Posted July 12, 2015 (edited) First kill ey.. After a while youll get used to being killed or betrayed. I've tryed being friends to people I just get shot in the back. One day a bandit beat the crap out of me and knocked me out. He said "don't trust anyone" and I took his words. He left me live but took everything of my body even shoes and I just conintued on. Never trust anyone, I'm a cold hearted killer I never betray my steam friends and maybe if I see a guy on exp that doesn't try to shoot me first I might let him live(if he starts following he's done). muddyraccoon 176 Posted July 12, 2015 "...but I lost my nerve and shot the poor b*stard a few times. It was almost involuntary. I am sorry." In a clan I used to be in (note the past tense), we were on the large and open hill above the city-proper of Elektro. We were advancing in a line, grabbing cover where we could. Keep the same guy to your right and left, and keep even. Pretty much the only rule. As we got closer to buildings, we started taking fire. I ran up and prone-dove under a bush, my mates to the right and left undoubtedly followed suit. We were so close to the gunfire, I could taste the gunsmoke. I nearly soiled myself with anticipation/anxiety/fear. So when I see a guy creeping in a bush, not 10 yards away, I let loose my war cry and followed it up with a rain of bullets. Several minutes later, after my sobs became less violent, I would make sense of the voices comparing me to a douchebag Leeroy Jenkins, and informing me of my removal from the group. I learned a lot that day; all of it enlightening, none of it good, mostly depressing.

wacktopia 57 Posted July 12, 2015 You want to use vocal if possible. One of the main ways not to die when you meet someone is to keep moving around while your talking. That way if they pull a gun or they have a buddy in the trees, it's much less likely they will kill you. A combination of the game currently running unoptimised (low fps) and bad panic-shooting means even at point-blank range you can survive merely by running in tight circles around a player whilst they run out of ammo and then you can run off or kill them.
