Schadenfreude Island

Hey everyone,

 

 Like most people I thought the .56 update was going to be pushed last Wednesday so I decided to try and make Schadenfreude island for shits and giggles. I've watched videos of others doing it so I I though I'd give it a shot. My first idea was to try and drive a truck out, like you can to prison island, but the ocean floor is too rough and I kept flipping it on its side. When the server restarts the truck would spawn floating above wherever it was wrecked so I just swam out, jumped in and tried again. Unfortunately you cant see very far under water so I would just end up flipping again. I decided to abandon the truck idea before running it off a cliff and killing myself so I opted for the long swim instead. I heard hypothermia was an issue in the game but with all the swimming I've done up to this point I hadn't had any issues with it. So I went to Skalisty Island built a fire and filled up on water. When I got HOT I set my direction to 106 degrees and took the plunge. about 15 minutes in I started to get cold so I activated one of my heater packs. Not sure If it did anything or not but at this point there's no harm in trying. At about 30 minutes in I'm red freezing so I activate my last heater pack. No land in site in either direction and Its clear I will not be returning to Chernarus in this body so I pushed on for science. How long can one swim before giving up the ghost? The answer is 41 minutes and 39 seconds. 

 I don't know if the heater packs make any difference but before next Wednesday I'd like to try and collect twice as many and see if I can make it any further. I guess the fastest way to test this is try the swim without any heat packs to see if I get hypodermic before the 41 minutes. 

I assume hypothermia wasn't an issue in earlier versions which is how the island was accessible in the past. Does anyone know if the island is still there?

It is still there and hypothermia was introduced in 0.49. Tatanko was tried to swim there a couple times in 0.56 - hypothermia. Truck changes direction underwater or even falls off map so it's useless.

Using air activated heater packs while swimming is brilliant.

 

I wonder what the range of effectiveness will be with various stored, heated items.  Like, if you carve up some steamy guts from a fresh corpse and stuff it into your trousers.  Campfire heated can of beans maybe?  

 

No idea if the island is still there.

Both resulted in death by hypothermia, but the second time I was able to make it a LOT farther to the point where I could actually see the island. Odin Lowe even made the second trip with me :) I'll post pictures if anyone decides to call my bluff, but I don't have access to them at work right now.

 

Long story short: I'm going to make it. I'm confident. I got so, so close the second time and there is still plenty of room for improvement on a third attempt. If and when I make it, I assure you that I'll post about it!

 

Any questions? Feel free to ask away, I'll definitely share what I've learned from both past success and more recent failures.

It might be helpful to wear the most waterproof stuff, so a rain jacket and what not.

Right. Imagine what the debug plains look like then envision a small, hilly island that looks the same.

Now I’m really confused.  I started my second experiment in the water where I began swimming from the docks at Svetlo and went south down the coast to see how far I could go before Hypo sets in (without heat packs). I filled up with water and food before I started and was well energized.  I made it all the way down to the south side of Skalisty island before I had to come to shore to fill up on water and food.  I never had a single cold indication appear on my inventory dashboard.  I did get several “Im rapidly cooling off” messages throughout  the trip but I dissmised them and kept pushing. I was in the water for 2 hours and 10 minutes and no cold indications ! WTF?

My new questions are:

 

1. Are there different climent changes between servers?  I did this second experiment on a different server but it was a common public server.

 

1. Is open water tempature different from coastal water tempature?

 

Since I’m down here I’m going to head out into open water and see how far I can get to see if the server change makes any difference.

No idea what's going on here  :huh: You seem to have inverted resource consumption. On my most recent attempt to reach the island, I only just barely went to dark green energized shortly before getting there and had just recently become yellow thirsty as well.

That's Weyland's video! He made an expedition right around the same time I did. Same week even, I think. I went on July 4th. He and I both got the idea from Gews :)

It's a pretty small club, we would love to have another member ;) Odin is going with me on the next trip, too.. he's eager to join a small crowd of successful voyagers.

Success!!!  I made landfall on Schadenfreude island!!!  Due to server restarts it was nightfall when I got there but I GOT THERE.

I think BORORM hit the nail on the head .  My last attempt I was wearing a rain coat with cargo paints, this time I have a rain coat with gorka pants and didn’t get any cold indications on my inventory dashboard.  I received the typical “rapidly cooling off” messages but nothing more.  I didn’t use any heating sources, just filled up on water then hit the waves.  It took me 1 hour and 47 minutes.  I wish I had brought some stones to build a fireplace.  I feel like I should leave behind some kind of monument to say I was here.  If I had a can of spray paint I would vandalize the hill, isn't that what tourist do? KILLROY WUZ HERE.

  Now  I'm concerned I may not have enough water for the return trip. I left my mountain pack on the mainland because I thought this was going to be a one way mission and didn’t want my next character to start from scratch. That’s going to bite me in the ass. I thought you could drink while swimming but I was unable to perform that action. When I tried the message would say “you are unable to do that right now”.

 Ok, one item marked off my bucket list. Next item up for bid: The next farthest island.  I understand there's another island 44 Kilometers out but I don’t know how it can be achieved without being able to drink while swimming.  Maybe .56 will have some different options.

Hehe, I think that one is gone for now. You used to have 200 minutes of camel time, would get you 15-18 km without drinking. Weyland tried it, he ended up in the middle of the ocean and had to commit suicide. I thought maybe waterproof clothing could help, ballistic helmet, fireman's clothing, drybag, SPOSN backpack and rainjackets are the least absorbent.

That's freaking awesome :) Thank you for finding a method of making it easier to get there. When I went, raincoats were not a consideration... I wore an M65 jacket the first time and a TTsKO jacket the second time. Makes perfect sense. I should have listened to Gews when he offered me the same advice last week ;)

That's weird. I've used Imgur for over a year and it's never limited me in any way. I don't have a paid/pro account either.

Any ideas why they don't put something out here on the island as a cool little Easter Egg? Like maybe one of those grave markers to represent the poor bastard that gets marooned out there in the video? A couple trees and a rock. Also, why do these islands exist?
