why is food so rare for me?

Recommended Posts

hello,

i just started playing dayz and everytime i spawn i am hungry (this is normal i think)

but i can't seem to find food. like, if i loot 100 houses, i'll atleast get 3 cans of tuna (if i'm lucky)

same is for drinks. so when my friends are in cherno and i wanna meet them but spawn far from cherno, everytime i die of starvation of dehydration.

i really wanna play this game without dying in the first 30 mins.

thx for reading

The loot distribution is currently in bad shape. What happens is that too many items are spawning in one location, thereby lowering the overall number of food items that can spawn elsewhere. I see you are new, so maybe you aren't aware, but you can always give farming a go. Find yourself some seeds, a tool for digging a garden plot (hoe, field shovel, shovel, pickaxe, etc.), lime if you can find it (not necessary), and some water. It could save you from death.

The one advice you'll hear over and over but which is still good

Get the F..k off the coast!!!

the coast is picked clean on most if not all servers.

Apple trees are your friends and red berries bushes.too.. the blue ones will make you sick... might be the other way arround for berries as I'm not too sure since I rarely pick them.

you cant spend the first 30 mins heading to Cherno to meet friends hoping to find food on the way, you'll starve or die of exposure

you got to spend the first 30 mins doing 100% survival - you need food and clothes, bandages, a weapon. This means that you cant freshspawn and set off to meet someone unless they are coming to meet YOU with supplies. The first hour of the game is probably the most difficult to get through, you can't be socializing until you're set up to survive.

Plenty of threads about how to stay alive through the first hour of DayZ

Some say it's the best part of the game

As ColdAtrophy said, The loot distribution is a mess right now because it's an Old loot system (we got a new one called central loot economy since .55 arrived but they reversed it to legacy due buggs so it will return in .56) there is diffrence between servers, some have good loot some don't. if you found out a town is empty just skip it. but the situation is like this, some town have normal loots, some don't and some times have a lot of loot that you can't imagine (Bug).

what is that mean for you fellow survivor ? it means for .55 in order to survive, you most skip empty towns and normal towns for food or keep searching for bugged ones (i found out most of the times that elektro is bugged for an start it's a good town, if you can run enough without dying, NWAF seem to be bugged in most of servers too) (also note that this is an abuse of bug if you plan to play fair i simply don't, i mean come on you can found 20 sks in one place, isn't that coold ? :D ). or you can use other sources for food, like searching for berry, apple or simply grow them. haunting is another way but most probably if you can haunt that means you have enough food because you need like a lot of tools that you can't find that easily and ofc you need least a gun or a bow (which crafting ones are bugged)

also it's nice to mention that loot gonna be scare in .56 and don't  expect to find lots of food in a town, that is just so easy :D

why aren't your friends coming to meet YOU with food?

also I'd suggest that once you get on your feet again, go leave yourself food and water bottles in a backpack near the south spawns (you don't really need that for novo spawns).

There's basically food everywhere in Charnarus but it does require a bit of work to get. That is to say that with berries and apples*** starvation never needs to happen but foraging them is going to slow you down. Best bet is to forage to keep yourself alive (don't worry about getting energized/hydrated, just try and not be starving) until you find seeds/a potato and water*/shovel/hoeto plant and then garden yourself to happiness. If you find a firearm you can try to hunt, eating uncooked meat is generally fine - just don't eat the guts unless you have charcoal tabs. Finally there are metal wires in industrial areas/sheds around the map and that with a stick allows you to make rabbit snares** which (like gardening) are a great passive way to get food.

The point of all this is: staying alive takes effort and especially early on so running off across the map to meet your friends simply can't be your top priority. Rather if they are more established they should be finding you and helping you out. A small amount of gear can make avoiding starvation dramatically easier and from that point you have much more freedom to do other things, your friends should be helping you with that. My own personal houserule is that I never eat food that I don't forage/hunt/grow, it's not difficult but it isn't free either.

*If its raining, your crops grow without you watering them but sadly in this build there's no rain, so Chernarus is like Nevada.

**Double bonus from rabbits, if you don't have a water bottle/canteen you can make a leather canteen with only one rabbit pelt if you have lime and a leather sewing kit.

*** Berries for calories, use apples for hydration. Just a couple apples here and there will keep you hydrated but a berry bush addresses hunger much more effectively and better yet to no risk of cholera or food poisoning.

Dude. So much knowledge packed into that post that I think my head is gonna explode.

Just off the top of my skimming it:

I didn't know that you could plant a potato.

I didn't know you could make a canteen from a rabbit pelt.

I didn't know rain would water your crops, although it makes logical sense.

Ha, thanks, I always keep a potato in my inventory once I find one because you just slap that thing in the ground, add a little water and you'll never starve again. They are remarkably good for energy.

I'm gonna try some rabbit snares again. I made 3 and then forgot about them.

Although there's a bit of a drought hitting Chernarus at the moment, so you'll have to manually water your crops with canteen, etc. Also, gardens don't seem to persist (or not for me anyway...)

if you find a jerry can, fill it with water.  you can't drink from it (even purified) but it's enough water for a LOT of farming without having to touch your drinking supply.

I totally forgot to suggest this but it's a great tip. It just sucks when you accidentally "drink all" and then promptly vomit. You can take singular drinks from it fine but the animations are a bit funny and you drop it.

The below suggestions are great, however right now, human meat doesn't make you ill. So if you spawn on the beach, look down and search for stones. When you find one, put it in your hand and look down again and craft an improvised knife. Then go and either kill a player, or perhaps easier, find one that has recently died (the coast is littered with bodies), and then cut him up and gobble him down.

Yes but that comes with the downside of being a cannibal and thus being a legitimate KOS target for anyone with a shred of moral decency as well as those with none.

I knew about this one. However, the jerry can keeps despawning even from within a backpack or tent for me.

I refuse to farm. In a game where people complain about so many things being unrealistic, planting and harvesting a garden should take a lot longer than five minutes.

Hey, you don't have to kill the people yourself, but when some pathetic guy with an AK has run around Kamy killing every fresh spawn he see's, you're doing everyone a favour by harvesting that juicy meat. Don't let a fresh spawn die in vain, eat them!

you got to be tough to be a farmer

Takes about 15 minutes, in fact

If you're lucky

but you aint hardly lucky

And the server restarts blow it all away

And your spade rots to rust

and the thieves come

and the crops rot in 3 minutes if you dont pick them

And there's a drought, their aint no rain

And the rivers are poison

And if you harvest your crops to the ground they vanish in 1 minute

And if you store your crops in a heap they vanish in 10 minutes

And your pumpkins turn invisible, Lord

And there's a blight comes

its hard

you got to be tough

It's like the Grapes of Wrath in there
