Using Online Map Cheating?

Recommended Posts

I pretty much only use the DAYZDB map as I would the in-game maps; that is, essentially as just a map, to get my bearings. I would use the in-game maps instead, as I try not to metagame if I can help it, but it's such a hassle to use the in-game maps at the moment, as you essentially have to place EACH ONE in your hotbar at the bottom in order to effectively use it (which there aren't enough hotbar slots for, BTW), and there is currently no way to combine any different sections of map you find, as there is no single map for the entire region; it's split into several different smaller sections for the maps. I'm hoping they make the in-game maps easier to use in the future, and add some way to combine them into a larger single map; until then, I'll probably keep using the DAYZDB map.

However, I DID just discover a cool 3D map of Chernarus that another member is currently developing; it's only in Alpha at the moment (appropriately enough :P), but it's already looking pretty awesome. Here is the thread link: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/220977-new-dayz-3d-map/

And here is the actual map link: http://dayz3dmap.ru/

it requires a browser plugin to be installed first, but it's safe, and the map is actually really cool to use.

You CAN combine the various pieces into one map and one hot bar slot. Idk who told you otherwise, but they were wrong. I only use the in-game map because it is usable while on the move and it feels more immersive than an out of game map with colored dots all over it.

I use a map on occasion and do not consider it cheating.

Planning my routes of travel from point to point or if I get extremely lost.

If you want to collect the pieces and use the in game map...go ahead B)

I don't consider checking the map on occasion especially after changes and upgrades to be cheating in any way.  At this point I remember how to get around the map and navigate from place to place remarkably well without using a map like most players that have been around for awhile. But I do love and rely on the compass and that isn't cheating either.

I'm hoping they make the in-game maps easier to use in the future, and add some way to combine them into a larger single map; until then, I'll probably keep using the DAYZDB map.

While IIRC, there was a brief time, maybe 6-8 months or more ago, when there was an issue with combining maps, but that was fixed ages ago.

However, combining maps still has rules:

1) Maps are spawned either in 2 parts (North/South, East/West) or 4 parts (NW, NE, SW, SE)

2) Any 4-part map piece can be combined with an adjoining 4-part map piece to create a 2-part map piece (i.e., NE + NW = North Map, NW + SE= East Map)

3) NOTE: 2-part maps cannot be combined with 4-part maps. You will never be able to create a 3/4 map, for example (i.e., West Map and a SE Map will not combine). You must combine quarter-maps into half-maps, and then combine the half-maps to create a whole map.

There are only two things about the maps in SA that I really dislike. One, there are no markings for natural bodies of water inland, such as ponds. I have no problem with there being no markings for wells in the new version. Pond/lake markings were in the map in the A2 mod version, and their removal in SA takes a great deal of value out of having one. Two, the inward zoom limit is frustratingly restricted. I really can't see the value in not being able to zoom in closer - it's not as if the map is going to suddenly give you more detailed information, and why it has to block my character from doing something as natural and simple as moving the map closer to my face to focus on a small area is beyond me.

Lastly, I hope one day the actual condition of the map translates to what the player sees. A damaged or worn map should look damaged or worn - varying degrees of holes, burn marks, tears, coffee stains, extensive fold marks that create narrow lines of featureless bumps, etc. Ideally there should be a set of different states and areas of damage that can be applied so that to some degree, different maps look different - One may be missing a corner or have a big ink or blood stain in a certain area, while another has some burn marks and a coffee stain that you can still make out what's underneath, but at times can be difficult.

When the dipshit map maker adds in the town names in Cryllic for the in-game map and doesn't make me collect stupid map parts, then I'll use that. Until that time....

my preference is http://www.izurvive.comto be honest, specially when playing in a group as you can see instantly where everyone is and the intel that they leave on the map.  People can argue over whether it's cheating or not to use a map like DayzDB at the end of the day most Vets know the map backwards now and forget just how daunting the whole thing is when you first spawn, I say just let folk tare away, not like anything can be done to stop it a bit like using 3rd party coms, steam streaming etc etc.

I just started using this too - far superior map with contours I turn all that other crap off. I know where all the loot spawns are pretty much now and if I don't, I'll be surprised when I find them which will just be a bonus. Having a decent map like this though is a lot better.

When the dipshit map maker adds in the town names in Cryllic

I don't mind the map parts, but I forgot that the names on the map are not in Russian. That bugs me too. I wouldn't mind having both on the loot tables and the English one being crazy rare, though.

Like most of the old-timers, we don't really need the map, but I like occasionally having one to plan out routes once I have collected the bare essentials, and not have to wait until I am not playing the game to do that.

Kinda.....its best to use this when your trying to memorize the map or when your lost veryyy lost. Basiclly this is just like having your character pop out his phone and looking at it. If your a guy who wants a challenge then don't use it.

I don't consider it cheating, but I do think it takes away a large aspect of the game (exploration, becoming lost and 'survival instincts' kick in etc.). Before I knew the online map existed, I thought the landscape was much bigger and every turn in the road was an adventure. Now it feels like more of a rush to get from A to B.

I do think it removes the frustration of not knowing where the f**k you are - in particular when you're looking for friends or other people in general. Especially if you're only surrounded by fields.

I don't reccommend using the online map initially to newer players (including friends) but don't begrudge anyone who does.

Really?

So using a 3rd party guide is a cheat. That's dumb. I played this game long enough were I can find my way around, but there are times I refer to a map. God dam this whole "I'm more hard core then you shit on the forums" Fucking stupid and hypocritical. Cut the shit out like you never looked at a days map....yeah

When I started the mod I made a point not to look at any online maps until I had found a map in game.  Now I can navigate the map without any help, like most people who have played for a while.

The loot locations in the dayzdb map for the SA aren't as accurate as they were for the mod, since I believe people don't actually have access to the loot tables.  So it's player submitted data, which I notice changes each patch.  It's still probably like 90% accurate but I find myself not using the dayzdb map as much as I did in the mod any more.

I wouldn't really call it cheating.  I used to have a binder of printed out maps for EQ back in the day =P  I do wish there was more incentive to use the in game maps.

The way I look at it the veterans and more experienced players dont need a loot map, they just know there way around and what buildings spawn certain types of items, Then the Bambi's can use the map to be on a level playing field.

The map is a good way to find your way around when you are new. In the beginning before i found it I ran around with no clue whatsoever of where i was or where to find water etc so thw map helped a lot. Now I have no greater need for it except for when I get lost, which happens sumtimes. I don't consider it cheating. I did use the in-game map for a bit and it was quite nice. The problem is finding all the pieces and that you can't put any markers on it.

The izurvive app is a good thing too if you have a pad.

Well it's true that the map isn't particularly required when you know Chernarus well enough but I like making precision journeys using the compass (some map tools would be nice too :)). The map parts annoy me no end - nobody sells map areas that small in RL lol

I think this was basically the issue; I tried using the in-game map early on and ran into that issue, and since haven't really bothered to try it again, as I found the DAYZDB map and just decided to use that for a while. Now that I know it works, I might try holding on to some maps I find.
