Guide to etiquette? How to be new right?

Recommended Posts

I've gone to servers before and always get booted or people just kill me without reason because i don't announce myself.

Is there something standard every player should do when entering a server?  This is ridiculous.

As a specific example, I went to server "Ye Old Pub" (208.115.205.226 : 2402) and it had messages upon entry like "Invite your friends and have a good time yadda yadda yadd".

After running for 15 minutes to a house in the middle of no where only to find a hat and random crap i can't use, a guy comes up as I'm looking at my bags and starts stabbing me with a pitch fork.  After I type "Whatever I guess that's cool to do" he continues to stab me and says "You didn't announce yourself bro".

Could anyone just give me a general guide to let everyone know I'm a newbie and to please just let me die naturally as I will?  (Include buttons to push when chatting or accessing options ect...)

I think I'd enjoy the game if I got past the part where people just kill me cause I'm a newb.

Actually, I'll just go to an empty server and play alone.  Always a good experience when you have to run from people because you can't act new right.

Sorry to tell you this, people in game usually don't give 2 sharts if you're new or not when they decide to kill you. Right now there are no consequences for murder and some if not most have adapted to the shoot first way of life because its easier than getting ganked by someone and his buddies who set you up for your gear.

Welcome to the struggle my friend, unless you plan on playing a private hive with a PvE ruleset, be prepared to get shot a ton of times if you aren't the sneaky type. Find a group a friends and run with em, don't trust anyone outside of your friends list and be wary of the hills and bushes overlooking a good loot spot

One thing stood out to me in your post and forgive me if I am assuming incorrectly.

After I type "Whatever I guess that's cool to do" he continues to stab me and says "You didn't announce yourself bro".

If you don't have a mic then you should get one and always announce friendly and do a wave gesture. However,I agree with Tobias, even doing all this doesn't help 70% of the time due to the lack of consequences.

If you want a friendly to roll with hit me up steam:trujuice

Hmmmm... I call this the flat tire response and I don't recommend it. The concept is you get a flat tire, put your car in the garage for a month in hopes that when you go back and check on it that the tire has been repaired and the car is good to go.

My suggestion to you would be quite the opposite. Go into busy servers- preferably private since things are a little less ridiculous on the private side... and stay near the beach up and down the coast. Granted the SW side is going to be more rammy and you'll get killed more just on principle- but you'll also be exposed more to the interactions and learn how YOU want to develop your methods of communicating.

Staying on the coast without any real equipment of value other than the basics will give you less to feel like you want to hold on to and will reduce the fear of interaction. You'll get killed... probably a lot if you don't have a mic (that's going to trample on your experience though I know some people just can't play with mic.) To be blunt- trying to learn how to interact or "be new" without a mic is likely going to be very, very difficult. I played for awhile without a working mic and was unable to see or hear any correspondence with anyone- took a lot of enjoyment out of the game. It's a glitch. You don't suffer it since you were able to hear this guy talking to you...

Musty gaming's server is a pretty balanced group- I've been killed there but it was in areas that it was kill or be killed. Most of the interactions I've had with people outside of the hot zones has been pretty friendly. How would you approach someone in normal conversation if you bumped into them in the street? "Hey man- how's it going?" If they can't see you, "I'm just on your left here approaching... I do have a weapon drawn but I'm no threat- just want to protect myself. I will keep my distance." Sometimes, even with your best intentions, that person may turn and unload his shotgun in your face in which case (if you survive that) it's time to escape and evade. You can run a ludicrous pattern and sniper shuffle like nobody's business in this game- forever if need be... so don't be afraid to tactically advance to the rear with enthusiasm.

Other times, the guy will just say hi back... ask if you need anything. Maybe ask if you have some food or bandages... or seen some item or another in your travels. Always be cautious around people- friendly and trustworthy aren't always synonymous... not by a long shot.

Evasion is the best possible answer for you.

I'm still a bit of a newb but having a good set of surround sound heaphones with a mic really helps! Sneak around a lot, observe other people interacting from safe spots...

I'm going to recommend evasion too. I've been playing for a little over a week and with the exception of the first guy I met, everyone I've seen has tried to kill me. Several have succeeded :) Seems best to just stay away from people for now.

If you have nothing in your hands you can run faster than a player holding something (usually hes holding a weapon, right?)

This is useful to know.

- otherwise everyone runs at the same speed ATM.

running away also gives you a chance to talk to the guy chasing you, if you want. (note: He will be saying "stop stop, I'm friendly" - because everybody chasing you with an axe always says that)

people tend to kill you if they suspect you want to kill them.

either talk or shoot, very simple rule of thumb.

Oh man, that takes me back... One time I was in a piano house when a player spawned in right next to me, so I did the only sensible thing and attacked him with a machete. He bolted, I ran after him yelling "I'm sorry let's be friends!". He stopped.

So I chopped him up real good. I felt kinda bad about it afterwards. But not too much :P

If you have the gun and they don't and your're going with a friendly/neutral playstyle be forceful and confident. "Hey! Stop, sit the fuck down and talk to me before I have to kill you..." If someone bolts without saying anything I don't know if they're running away or running for cover they get blasted. You need a mic for this game because a geared player is going to want to make the decision to shoot or not in less time than it takes you to type "friendly".

And time spent typing is time spent not sniper shuffling back and forth, shooting or diving for the nearest cover.

I got killed and apologized to when the guy got around to reading that I had "identified myself" he told me you NEED a mic for this game so I dug mine out and it's a much better experience. I got my mint Logitech 350 at a swapmeet for 50 cents, I thought it was just headphones and didn't look very hard at it at that price so I was pleasantly surprised when I got to the truck to look at my bargain.

Peoply will try to kill you for a variety of reasons. Whether they give you an excuse, or not is pretty irreleant. At the most basic, you are viewed as a threat. If you don't try t kill me right now, you may follow me and try to covertly kill me later. On top of that, you may have loot that I need to survive. Not speaking to me, makes me even more suspicious of your motives. Trying to type and maintain situational awareness puts you at a significant disadvantage.

Being a new player, it makes sense to start on a low pop server, so that you have a chance to figure out what all of the buttons do, without the additional drama of someone chasing you around with an ax.

Eventually, though, you will have to learn how to interact with others. But first of all, never forget rule #1 - Tust no one!

You have to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Always study your victm ... er ... potential new friend prior to making contact. Ideally, watch him interact with others. Is he a bandit, a homicidal maniac, friendly? Does it make sense to make contact with this idividual, or is it too risky? Ask yourself, What do I hope to gain by making contact? If you decide to proceed, you need to do so from a postion of power and maintain control over the situation. Keep in mind that some will try to put you at ease, only to murder you 30 minutes later, when your guard is down.

Give some thought to your approach. Do not run up to people and invade their person space. This could be misunderstood as a threatening gesture. Do not repeatedly yell, "Friendly, friendly, friendly, friendly, friendly ...." This is VERY annoying!

All interactions are inherently dangerous. Be prepared to kill, or be killed.

Next time someone comes at you with a pitchfork, circle them and keep punching their head. You've got a better chance of knocking them out then they have of killing you with the pitchfork.

There is no rules when acting "new". People can always kill you, even on a private server that states strictly no PVP, the game still allows you to be killed, and there is nothing anyone can do about it until after you're dead. So with this in mind, as someone as previously stated, get used to being killed, embrace it, and get to a 50 pop server and see how many people you can kill before you get killed!

I recommend finding a decent blunt force object such as a frying pan, cooking pot or the easiest to find a stone (get to the beach, look down, press f to search for stones). Put it in your hands and then find a decent ambush spot in a busy place. Behind a door, crouched hidden in a bush, in a shed behind the door, basically anywhere that people can't see you until they come in. These blunt objects will knock someone out first hit to the head (unless they've got a helmet on). Try and knock someone out with gear. For quickest looting, drop all of your own fresh spawn clothes on the floor as soon as you knock them out, and then quickly drag all of their stuff onto you, and then thank them over voicechat, and run away before they wake up.

Regarding KOS, etiquette and respect, watch this:

You don't have to be a "Friendly", but even more important than that is that people play respectfully and this clip is a brilliant example, in my opinion. :)

I find that it helps to utilize some serious RP tactics just to engage the 'bandit' to want to listen to ya. Entertain em for a bit.

-Carry a book around.

-Ask where is the nearest bathroom

-offer to team up and be a gopher

May or may not work but if you're fast and witty, it may buy you a at least a minute!

ENO75 comment made me think of some stuff:

If you have a mike, a good idea is to start to talk to the other player from some place where he can't see you or you're well covered.. where you can see him in 3d person view, from behind a wall or round a corner, etc.then so you can make voice contact and also see how he reacts. And you have a way out of that place if he starts coming too close.

It's very hard to locate where a voice (or any sound) is coming from in DayZ... so if he can't locate you right away, you have a chance to see how he reacts as well as what he says, and you have a way out away from the danger area in case he's a crazy person.

Another thing I look out for - If you talk together, and he does strange pauses while you're talking, - if he does that once, it 85%sure... but if he does it twice its 100% certain hes calling his mates on teamspeak. That means you clear out of the area Right Now. . Bale out, bale out, it may be too late already.. or kill the dude and leave - do not stop to search the body.

But you CAN have great conversations, funny or helpful or serious.. it's not all bad, and the other player is not always looking for ways to kill you (just a lot of the time he is, because he wants to use his M4 because he has it, so what else is it for?).  But if you meet an experienced player, so if he wants to talk with you he can deal with it - who is not paranoid and not a  killer with 75 notches on his new gun - meeting those kind of players is REALLY interesting.

From what I understand, Musty Gamers are not a "group" or a "unit" - they are a collection of individuals..So if you meet one of them, it can be interesting and good.. or unusual. There are many comments from Musty Gamers'z ( Musty Gamer-ers? Musty Gamer-gamers?) around on all these forums. See what you think of them. Hey - they don't really have big ugly moustaches, that's just a myth to strike fear into the enemy. In fact they're all totally bald (every hair) due to the same genetic defect that makes them almost immune to zombie bites. OK, maybe one or two of them are cannibals who only ever nothing except eat human meat, but it's good for you, and they do it with style (roasted with applesauce).

- This is not an ad for MG.

I'm joking, but ENO75 tells it true..

BUT - there are a hundred different ways to play -  If you want to go some other way you can join a clan of 100% organized streetfighters, Some are very, very good at it - and they live just for that, they know every back alley, every shortcut, every line of fire, and do that ALL the time.

On the other hand, cunning and sneakiness can sometimes deal with even these guys, or those military 'police style' squads, even if you're solo. (I'm kind of a woodsman, solo resistance fighter myself). Any organized, kitted-up squad just makes me want to drop in behind them, take out their 'overwatch' (they always have one because they all know the field manual, so they're easy to outwit) or take out one flanker, and then get back into the hills ALIVE.

xx pilgrim (stay at a distance and I'll talk to you, no prob)

ps - some Public servers kick you for NO reason (the 'reason' is - so they can play privately with 1 or 2 friends, and loot up). It's totally against the rules, but they do it anyway. They DGAF. You can (you should) complain about them but it's hard to have evidence. Check these forums for many threads about instant kick for no reason, and how to lodge a complaint. Mainly, spend your time finding servers where that does not happen. Shortlist your 'good' servers.
