in defence of FOV slider

Recommended Posts

So I was looking at the video of the new UI that is being worked on and it looks to me like we will no longer have access to adjusting FOV on the fly, Why? what is the problem with anyone setting their field of view anywhere say between 65 & 110 Degrees?   Freelook is one of the most amazing assets of the game engine, having a head that moves independently of the body, becomes essentially your eyeball that not only can you move but you can focus as well!! That's all it is & you really need it to see anything when you're playing at a 4k resolution just to level the playing field (we are still seeing exactly the same thing as anyone else that is using it or can if they choose - is it a pain to use it? yes, yes it is, but you don't have to, no one is making you.  removing innovation from the game is never good.  It has as much right to exist as 3pp view.

Having an instant scope is silly, nobody needs that much zoom, was never a problem in other titles. If "in-game FOV slider with 0.5-2x magnification" was a suggestion I think it would be shot down. People just don't like things being taken away once they're there. It should be set at a comfortable, not extreme level and left alone like most every other game.

The best defense I saw of it was "my eyes have much higher resolution in real life, it's just an extension of the RMB zoom" LvlzCsn.png

It has as much right to exist as 3pp view.

So... none

This is the kind of thing that always made me laugh while watching the youtubes and seeing people do this so much its almost as if they feel the need to get a constant advantage over everyone. Sad really that the game doesn't give you enough magnification, therefore you feel the need exploit the mechanics of the game.

This is my opinion, I know it will be scoffed at and I am ok with that. Don't expect me to be dissuaded from my feelings on this matter. Usually if I am watching a video or live stream and this kindy of tomfoolery starts to happen I just stop watching. You're just exploiting loopholes in the game mechanics and are a bit bent that it won't be so seamless to do anymore.

meh.. in all the many many years i've been playing this game when engaging in combat i've initiated  i've always been looking through a scope at as narrow a field of field as possible, it changes constantly depending on scope, weapon all have different comfortable FOV's to use, I really don't think it's possible to have a uniform setting for them all, I really hope it's something I can adapt to but I really don't know if I can even be arsed to.

And the game really doesn't give enough magnification. All the scopes are underpowered, they have completely wrong magnification. The Long Range Scope only magnifies half what the CZ550, M24, etc, used to, and it only gives a 7.5x zoom when it's supposed to be 15x (so much less than most common hunting scopes). ACOG, PU are only about 2x! Scopes should be fixed, in-game slider removed.

IMO 3PP is worse for good gameplay than FOV slider and 99% of streamers go 3PP (often streamers have good excuse though, they have 20x more servers to choose from to hide from stream snipers!). But there's no chance they remove/change 3PP, whereas FOV slider is still quite controversial and perhaps the devs can be influenced to put it only at main menu.

While I do agree, scopes are borked at the moment. Was this intentionally done or is it just miscalculation by the devs/engine/coding? The reason I ask if it was intentionally done is maybe just maybe they were trying to curb certain types of behavior and failed.

The 3pp debate.... I am unmoved by the arguement as I enjoy both modes. I will usually play Rp private hive in 1pp but I will switch if friends want to play 3pp. When I speak of people abusing the FOV slider, I am speaking of people who are sniping and they will literally stop and say something to the effect of "I need to get a better view" and bring up the menu and jack the slider all the way and then reaquire their target. I just find people who need to get one up on everyone, a bit silly and amusing. I cannot endorse or enjoy the fact people need this ability to play the game, I guess thats just a difference in game philosophy and playstyle

Put the FOV slider at the main menu only so people can't use it to have super zoom and we're fine.

Nothing wrong with the FOV slider.

Problem is it should require a restart anytime you change it to avoid being exploited.

Could be placeholder not fixed yet, maybe strange ideas about magnifications. Kind of doubt it would be an actual mistake. Scopes should be relative to RMB zoom so minFov scope = minFov character/desired magnification.

Yes, lots of people "abuse" FOV that way. But as far as I'm concerned this is far less detrimental to good PVP gameplay and tactics than having a floating camera 2 meters behind the head - if you were removing only one of these two features and asked me to choose between keeping FOV slider or keeping 3PP - I know which I would choose. :P

At default FOV, without even using the FOV slider, one can play with FOVs of 53, 94, and 106 degrees (zoom in, no zoom, zoom out).

This^

Such a simple change, would allow people to set the FOV to anything they want, but not abuse it, like we see them doing now, quickscoping bastards!!!

But honestly, i couldnt care less about the FOV slider, ive never ever used it in DayZ, or made any FOV adjustments in any of the Arma games.

That is the right time it shows it!

You do realize you're bitching about the removal of an exploit, right? Why should we have two scopes? How easy do you want sniping to be?

Are you going to complain once the gamma exploit is fixed, too?

The less exploits the better, DayZ already suffers from too much meta gaming.

Umm what he's talking about works on both 1st and 3rd person. Also Fov in 1st and 3rd person is the same, 3rd person is just more behind which can quickly look like you get more fov there.

Or the keyword ADS is what I don't understand. But I guess it means aim down sights?

Key word Exploit, how is that possible to exploit a feature added to the game? you make that word sound dirty.

Just saying.

An exploit is exactly that, using a feature/mechanic/part of a game for its unintended purpose.  The purpose of the FOV slider isn't to give you an on the go extra zoom/"scope" function.  The purpose of the FOV slider is to set your FOV to what's comfortable for you to play with and leave it there.  It's an unintended side effect that people have found a way to exploit it to nearly double their zoom.

Saying "it's part of the game" is shirking all your own responsibility to essentially not "cheat" just because a loophole was left in the game.  Yeah they need to fix it, but in the mean time it isn't an excuse to do it.  That is what is called integrity.

Sorry to make you feel dirty, in my next post I had made mention of people sighting in on a target, then claiming they need a better view or something to that effect. They then proceed to jack the FOV slider to enhance their magnification, I feel it shouldnt be so seamless and no, I don't think this was the intended function of the FOV slider. Just don't expect me to buy peoples excuses for needing to do this.

If you want to fiddle with your settings by all means do so, you paid money to play how you want to. We should just agree to disagree on this subject

Does no one realize that this disproves the thread? There is clearly and FOV slider under "Game" in the video, and this thread is based off of the absence of said slider, so.....I don't see why arguments are continuing.

I get it that is something BI put into the game but I still stand by my assertion that it wasn't intended to be abused in this manner.

I think you're completely missing the point here.

The problem is that when people spot someone they want to shoot, they will sit still and decrease their FOV that way by default it zooms in a lot and then use(if they have one) their optic to zoom in even more than usual. Once they've taken their shot or whatever, they turn it back up to something they like and continue. Then do the same thing all over again.

This is in fact very much an exploit of the FOV slider. There is no defending it as that means you're defending an exploit(pretty much a cheat in this situation) So i'm all for it getting removed/needing a restart.
