Sorath (DayZ) 6 Posted January 2, 2015 So I played DayZ mod a few years back. I decided to give the standalone a try. For the most part I like what they have done. There is one thing though that I think will make me stop playing and it is really annoying. Generally I try and stay on public servers this way when I leave I can pick up right where I leave off. It also allows me to play on less populated servers for time being with out having to worry about being ganked by other players. Now this was working fine till I left to do something in my normal life and came back to play only when I jumped back in I'm basically right back to starting over. Now if I die because of Zombies or other players fine no problem. However when I just suddenly have to start all over again that is annoying. I some times will spend hours working my way inland trying to get to Airfields or areas where I can find better weapons. It takes me hours to get a bag and supplies going. Then to suddenly loose it all for no real reason sucks beyond imagination. I don't find starting over time and time again because my character info is lost in to winds to be very fun. As I said if I spend hours gathering resource and working my way inland and I die to player or zombie and thus have to start over fine its reap of natural world. Starting over for no reason at all is beyond frustrating and complete waste of time.
Max Planck 7174 Posted January 2, 2015 Did you join the same server as before?Note that 1st person and 3rd person servers don't share character databases, your character will not carry over. Furthermore, private shards have their own databases.Your guy might still be out there.
Sorath (DayZ) 6 Posted January 2, 2015 Honestly it would take forever to find where my character might be there just to many servers. Honestly I think I'm going to give up on this game. I should never bought it. I'm not going to sit here and try and figure out what servers share what there to many servers for that. I spent 6 hours to day finding stuff and making my way inland to airfields only to loose it all. I can't even begin to tell you how deeply frustrating that is. At the moment I have no idea what servers save share info. Basically you guys need to come up with a better system to allow players to find servers that will have characters saved and shared with other servers. Cause this starting over again and again is rather annoying.
Max Planck 7174 Posted January 2, 2015 (edited) Try the 'history' tab in the server browser. If you spend a short while learning how the servers work you won't have to start over again. The information you need in readily available on these forums.Every game has a learning curve, this one not the least. It is worth it though, in my opinion. Sorath (DayZ) 6 Posted January 2, 2015 Yea I'm done. I had a good start and lost it and to loose all that progress just not worth it. I wish I had never bought the game. It doesn't help that Zombies blow and aggro from a mile a way. I have yet to actually meet a play that didn't kill me. It just a lot of me dying and having to start over again. It not fun at all I can go play 7 days to die and fare far better and have way more fun.

I know a few people who have been getting reset on the latest patch, though it's never happened to me. I very much doubt that it's happening as often as you are making it out to. It might be worth looking for servers with the lowest ping and checking your desync regularly. If it gets real high, disconnect and go to another low ping server. You also need to remember that different servers may have different hives. Each private server has its own character. First person only public servers give you a different character to first/third person ones. Finally, if you're regularly logging in and out of different servers, there's a good chance that that's causing the wipe. If your character isn't updated on the hive before you connect to another server, you'll lose it. Wait before connecting to another server. If you server hop, just stop. It ruins the game for you, puts you at an unfair advantage and increases the chance of your character being wiped.Outside of that, come back in a month or two. It'll probably be fixed by then.If it's an issue with you having used private servers, just check your history or add one to your favourites and start from there and keep your character until it's wiped for an update. Happens every now and then, but it's exciting as it means new features are there to explore. Edited January 2, 2015 by Beizs
McWendy 675 Posted January 2, 2015 Just join public servers in the beginning. 1st and 1st/3rd view. The publics should give you just those 2 characters. Once losing stuff isnt a thing anymore join privates. And im no expert but maybe look in your history tab or wright it down
comikz 218 Posted January 2, 2015 I've been reset a few times, but that was to be expected due to problems this game has due to it's "Pre-Alpha" phase of development, gearing to me is fun, because I tend to get pretty anxious when I am fully geared, which usually gets me killed in someway or fashion. It's these bugs/glitches that we need to accept and get over, there is nothing we can do but report the problems when we see them, and hope that the Devs get it sorted out soon. I wouldn't give up on the game OP, I would just not overly gear yourself so if you lose your stuff, it's not the end of the world.

You sound like you gave up before you even gave the game a chance. One geared character is nothing. The game is not about your inventory. I lost tons of character due to bugs, premature login, 2nd floors, invis zombies, KOSers... so what. You did the ultimate mistake tho; you're attached to your gear, you even call it "progress". The only "progress" is to survive here, not to carry an m4 with skull balaclava. I would never buy this game if it wasnt for loosing your character, progress and everything you had uppon death. I mean, how darn borning would it be not loosing your progress? seriously, i would never bought this game if that was the case. It would be just another generic shooter. not a single person would try to survive. First thing you need to accept in this game is that you WILL DIE. you will. sooner or later. You will lose EVERYTHING.Either by headshot, broken ankle or desinfectant. You get the freedom whether u gonna cry and beg for your life, sob about ur gear or you gonna show teeth and gear yourself even faster the next time. Sula 1205 Posted January 2, 2015 Hi Sorath, it can be frustrating when it happens and most of us know how that feels as we've been there too. But as others have said, perhaps not as politely, when you play an alpha there will usually be a lot of pain and frustration. For me, it's worth it because it's one of the most joyful games I've ever played. So I grit my teeth and work with what I've got. Mind you, right now I'm on an old lappy because my pc is broken so I can't play at all. Best of luck to you if you choose to try again and again and again - that's how dayz is - you have to grit your teeth and start over every time you die. It's not some little console game where you just click a mouse and you "win". It's hard work and there's little reward other than knowing you experienced the game, and tomorrow you'll experience it differently.

About three quarters of the way down will be the name and IP address of the most recent server you were on. That's saved my bacon once or twice.
Bludy 324 Posted January 8, 2015 i can understand the frustration, but take it as a learning opportunity. sometimes i welcome a wipe or a bug that kills my toon, so i can start from scratch and try other ways to survive and have some fun without having to worry if i loose my flashlight
SMoss 2101 Posted January 8, 2015 I too realize that it can be massively frustrating to randomly lose your hard earned gear, but as it is already mentioned, the game is still in the alpha stage so it will have numerous bugs. This one has already been filed though and the devs are working on nailing down and fixing the problem: http://feedback.dayzgame.com/view.php?id=78 It might take a while to fix the bug, but since the bug is not exactly a minor one, I would be well surprised if the team would not fix it during development ;)
Killawife 599 Posted January 8, 2015 Lol for real? I make a new character almost every night I play. Either because one gets killed or I go on a private hive and make a new one just because its way more fun to gear up than to snaek around fearing death at any minute and losing your gear. If you can't stand losing your gear because it takes hours to gear up then this game is most likely not for you since thats what its all about.

Either because one gets killed or I go on a private hive and make a new one just because its way more fun to gear up than to snaek around fearing death at any minute and losing your gear. You know, I've been doing that too. The past week or so I've added about a dozen private servers to my favorites, trying various playing styles with each one. And the more gear I get, the less fun it gets. Not that the game sucks all of a sudden, but I just start wandering around aimlessly.
Death By Crowbar 1213 Posted January 8, 2015 (edited) ... but I just start wandering around aimlessly. When I play it's one of 3 things - I've got someone I'm joining to play with (this is rare, but happens) I've got an objective and place I want to visit. Sometimes during the day in reading the forums I get ideas about places I've not seen, gear I want to look for, or just something random I want to do/try... then when I log in that evening I've got an objective to achieve. I'm totally randomly running around and have no clue whether I'll be looting one minute or randomly throwing chem lights at people the next. Playing with no objective in mind is hit or miss, especially if you're not the type to play the game in a "kill em all" style. If I'm really really bored sometimes it turns me evil from bandit all the way to straight up murderer - but I usually come away feeling like a jerk after logging off when I start killing random people, so that doesn't happen often. It's a sandbox game, the world is what you make of it. sachad 1016 Posted January 8, 2015 (edited) It's a sandbox game, the world is what you make of it. Survive! Well, since I'm having fun at the car cemeteries, I'm thinking of playing a new game. Go into a junkyard with nothing but jeans, shirt and trainers, and whatever I can find there is what I roll with. Once I'm done, I stop looting and try to get the additional food and loot from players, friendly if possible, by force if necessary. See how long I last before I either die of starvation, dehydration or gun shot wounds :P Edited January 8, 2015 by Sacha

Lord Daem 15 Posted January 12, 2015 Go on your history and when you've figured out which server it was, click "Add to Favourites."I currently have three characters running, one on the public 1st/3rd person Public Hive and two on Private Servers.
DeusAbsconditus 0 Posted January 19, 2015 do you all play the standalone or mod?
eno 1049 Posted January 19, 2015 This is the standalone section though I'm sure many have played / play both.
chickenmcfuggits 49 Posted January 20, 2015 (edited) It doesn't seem like its been mentioned yet and I know this topic is several weeks old, but if you immediately log out and then try again after a little bit you will have your old character back. This has happened to me several times and seems to be server specific, I have favorited servers that I play on that never have this problem.
