DayZ Lack of Social Realism

Recommended Posts

They weren't shooting because there was a lot of things to steal and your life didn't depend on it. But if your life depends on those few cans of food and there is another guy who wants them too, you'll kill him just to survive another day.

And like I said, riots caused by natural disasters or small scale society collapse will eventually end, things will go back to normal. Which is not a case in DayZ.

So basically this is what you want to believe and not based on evidence. Oki.

What evidence ? We only had small cases of SHTF, we can't know what will happen when entire civilization collapses worldwide.

I'm a 4.

I've tried playing other roles but they just don't feel right and were not "fun". Quake2/3, HL/2, CS, CoD, UT - these are all games where I've done PVP extensively in the past and I'm fine with killing everyone I see and topping the leaderboards. DayZ is different, to me it feels wrong to kill someone in DayZ even if they attack me. There's a lot of MMO and progression element in DayZ and there's a consequence to dying or even getting in an altercation - ruined gear, blood loss, broken bones, etc can set you back enough that you think twice about whether to engage someone or not.

That being said, the most annoying time someone every betrayed me was in Kamyshovo(sp?). Dude with a gun runs up and we're both like "friendly", wave, and start chit chatting - just making small talk. It seemed like he was totally cool. We talked for about 5 minutes. Then randomly he raises his gun and fills me full of SKS rounds, like emptied the whole thing into me... and started trash talking, dropping F bombs, and calling me a noob. I was like, "Wow... really?"

Yeah, that was annoying to say the least.

However, being a #4 and always friendly (but always ready to defend myself) I've run into a few Twitch streamers - I find them a lot of fun to interact with because something silly is going to happen. I've run into DeadlySlob and CaliGrrl, I'm still on the lookout for Mr Moon and some others.

Look guys, if we want a game were people act like its a real apoc the devs have to add the mechanics for it. Like a moral type mechanic or even do like they did in the mod, were if your close to a bandit you heart starts beating... or what ever. Or start a group and buy a server were you role play. Otherwise there really no point in talking about it, there just isn't. Becuase on this forum there is 100s pages, of posts the are anti KOS, anti bandit, general players being dicks to each other threads and really it hasn't done any good what so ever to sway how players play this game. Players have not played one bit different becuase of those never ending threads, not one bit. Were just beating a dead horse. No one gives a shit. In fact since the .49 stable patch I have not used prox voice com 1 time, not once.

I have no idea why people come here complaining about it, like they were expecting players to be nice to each other. No idea were this idea in there head comes from. The only thing I can think of is they watched staged DayZSA you tube videos, thats what they dayz was going to be like, which is a total falsehood. I know I know I'm the bad guy that tells santa is not real, but its for your own good kids. This game has never been a freindly game and on its current path never will be. Freindly players are rare. There no mechanics for it.

I hate to sound too blunt, but its just true. You either adapt to it, counter it or your going to find your self really frustrated playing.

Yes in most cases in ended in chaos and the weak got hurt.

Please, describe some of these scenarios. The two major "SHTF, total collapse of society" that I can think of would be the Bronze Age Collapse; where there was a major volcanic eruption in the Mediterranean and worldwide trade of tin (necessary for bronze casting) was stopped, and the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.

In both cases, things weren't actually that bad. In the Bronze Age Collapse, people generally went ,"Well, fuck, no more tin means no more bronze......fuck it, guess we gotta use these iron tools (many Bronze Age peoples made use of iron on the side, at least past the first part of the Bronze Age). Whatever...."

And the WRE collapse wasn't so much a "societal collapse" as it was "say goodbye to the old boss, say hi to the new one". Arguably, the "barbarian" (by Roman standards. They were pretty much the start of later medieval feudal kingdoms, and the Franks even had a literature Renaissance!) kingdoms were as effective, if not more so, at keeping the peace and upholding society than the Romans were. The Roman Legions were already heavily Germanicized, as well as the Emperor being a German (tribal, not modern state German) Literally everyone not living in a city was already living in a feudal system anyways so literally people would just change leaders.

But people were stealing. They weren't going around shooting each other in the head! What are you trying to say? That humans turn into psychopathic murderers as soon as there are no laws to follow? When has this ever happened? Ever?

Never. There has actually been more riots in the modern era than in antiquity.

Why shouldn't it be? The game aims for authenticity, not staticism. A static game is a poor one, almost as bad as "railroading".

I did write small one didn't I.

And we all saw the news, how people looted and tore towns apart when some natural disaster hit causing mass chaos. And that was only temporary SHTF.

Do you honestly think people are going to be nice to each other when they need to fight over every scrap of food or every piece of warm clothing when their life depends on it? Sure some will be, some will share and help. But most of people will show what they are really capable of when they are pushed.

I'm gonna tell a story that's on topic with the OP's post because I won't get sucked into trading opinions about what "realism" would take place in an inherently fake and imaginary apocalyptic scenario.  The fact that people can argue their opinions on that matter with the mindset that they are "correct" is idiotic.  It's factually proven that the majority of humans in crisis revert to self preservation and FOR THE MOST PART abandon care for others.  The most recent being the hurricane that hit Cabo a couple months back.  Hotel and resort employees left the area to go home and take care of their families.  People were stranded without food, running water, and power.   This wasn't even an apocalypse.

To my story:

My friend (now known as David) and I were fresh spawns near Ayopobka.  We decided we should meet up there.  I found a fire extinguisher and he found a zombie which made him bleed.  This repeated until he was out of bandages.  Luckily a lonely black man (Chester) was strolling through the town as well.  He asked Chester to help him by bandaging.  So like many of you doofuses that think it's a good idea to blindly trust people in Chernarus he rips his shirt and starts bandaging David.  I wait for the action, then run out from behind a house, fire extinguisher held up high and crack him in the back of the dome with it.  Out cold.  While he is out I bandage David but he wakes up during this action and backs away.  Big mistake because I was ripe for the punching.  David apologizes to Chester and tells him I thought he was hurting David.  So Chester comes back to talk to David.  As they continue their conversation I slowly back pedal away, and perform the super flank of the century by entering a house "to loot" and exiting the rear.  Crept up a few building making sure he didn't realize where I was, came down the road again wielding the same extinguisher; however, god had renamed it "Extinguisher of Morons who trust people in DayZ and think that humanity should outweigh inhumanity in an apocalyptic situation that inherently is inhumane", and screamed "SERIOUSLY YOU LET THIS HAPPEN AGAIN" as Cracked him over the head and ended his miserable life.

Link to your "factual" information, please. Fact =/= allegory, although based upon your above story, I highly doubt you would believe the findings of an actual peer-reviewed research study on human psychology, and believe what you want to believe.

In actuality, your entire allegorical reference reinforces my earlier point. Did the employees turn into rampaging monsters? No, they went home to connect with their family units, and probably checked in with extended family.

Do me a favor, read this: http://www.cracked.com/article_14990_what-monkeysphere.html

It will explain the reality of human interactions far better than you or I will.

One time I met some black chick, neither of us had mic's so we just sorta stood at the road for a second, she walked off while I dropped a bandage or something, I'm nice like that.

Figured fuck you then I'll leave it on the floor and walked off, turned round to check if maybe she picked it up and there she was with her fists up about to punch me >.>

Got a few hits in and then a zombie bro joined in, I was healthy and she clearly wasn't went down in like 5 hits between me and the zombie.

It was pretty funny really.

Another time I came across 3 people near the coast, fairly fresh looking cept one had a backpack, I was also fresh.

Stood and said "hey" a few times to no response then the two women of them kill the other dude and come after me.

Ran away for a bit, one veered off to loot a weapon in a house I guess so I knocked out the black girl chasing me and took her backpack, then the other showed up knocked her out too then punched her for a while to make sure she was dead, seemed like they both respawned.

Epic win and epic wut for me, mugging sure as hell went south for them.

lol, read this as if you didn't know what dayz or gaming is... lmao

Well, 2 situations comes to mind:

This was back when you would often spawn outside Elektro on the beach. I ran to Elektro, got some decent gear and a gun. Dont remember which. I run into this freshspawn (or someone that seemed like it) that seemed friendly at first, he even bandaged me when i got hit by a zombie. We talked for a while, and I told him I had seen some clothes in a nearby industrial building, so i lead him over there. About 10 seconds later his friend in full military gear comes sneaking around the corner with his M4 and kills me. I felt like a complete sucker lol

Another story i already posted in another thread:

I was a freshspawn in the fields west of Svetlojarsk, and i spot this group of 5 or 6 players. Turns out they were a group of german bandit roleplayers. The leader was this guy with the Payload Dallas mask, and the sawed off shotgun. He called himself Kaiser, spoke with an american accent, and sounded like the main character from Bulletstorm. They proceeded to hold me up at gunpoint, even tho I had literally spawned 30 seconds earlier. They were being honest, and told me I was gonna die, and it would be now if I tried to run (They had miltary gear, but didn't wear camo clothes.) I decided to play a long for fun, and they took me to the area with the cliffs overlooking the road east to Berezhki, and here, they set up camp, and the Kaiser guy proceeded to spend the next 30 minutes asking me weird and random questions, like what i like and didn't like about DayZ. Whenever one of the other germans spoke, he would literally scream into the mic, at the top of his lungs for them to "shut the fuck up!". He did this several times. It was hilarious. I wish i had recorded it. It all ended with Kaiser wishing for me to jump off the cliff, while screaming "Kaiseeeer" so he could Fraps it. I actually did it lol.

Even tho I am not into roleplaying myself, it's nice to spice up the game every once in a while.

Someone else can debate this with you.  I'm too lazy to look up every instance of "inhumanity" after some sort of crisis, and then link it to you, in hopes that you will actually take the time to read about it and not continue to argue.  Psychology will tell you why someone leaves hundreds of people stranded to help the 3 that they are closest to but it cannot tell you that this is by definition "humane/inhumane".  That's in the eye of the beholder.  I said it's fact that self-preservation outweighs the need to help others in crisis.  Look up aftermath of "x" disaster and find the looting stories yourself if you want sources.

There is no study that can correctly asses how humans would react in an apocalyptic event.  There hasn't been one yet.  Any study you reference would provide evidence of crises that have not escalated to a defined apocalypse.  Therefore any theory derived from this type of research is supposition at best.

I never thought this thread would get so popular.. Anyways I've learned my lesson. in DayZ never trust anyone unless its a faithful gaming companion that you have had for years. But I've had to make decisions, and kill others. This game scares me. But that's EXACTLY what keeps me going. I treat everyone as if "they just want my military gear" and I'm right. They will act friendly but then right when my back is turned they will try to kill me. I now trust no one in DayZ. unless my deep deep GUT tells me they are alright. But is almost NEVER the case. Thank you guys. I appreciate your opinions. :)

No no no.

The lesson here is don't suggest anything on this forum that involves people being humans and not just serial killers in the game, it never goes down well if anything close to the word "friendly" or "co-operative" is in the OP.

So yeah rule of thumb for this forum, mostly anyway, don't suggest anything that would make KOS/banditry less prevalent. (or talk about how people wouldn't act like this in reality)

Don't trust anyone. Seriously some of my closest (to the point of IRL) friends have killed me ingame, for dumb reasons or simply to piss me off. Granted I'm not no longer friends with them for it, nor would I say this happens too often when we play seriously, but if you are playing seriously, always put yourself first. No matter what.

Talking about it is fine - discussion is something that's always welcome (I don't see anyone really upset that it was even brought up.)

The difference is that trying to suggest a forced change in psychological behavior typically does not come across well in a game where "doing what you want" is prevalent. Going about it with things like 30 minute respawn timers for new-spawns also have plenty of downsides.

Rule of thumb for any discussion or debate ever, is don't bring forward an idea and expect it to be well received and/or taken seriously. And if you must argue about it, accept that the people you're arguing with are very unlikely to change their mind(s).

I learned that, but the main point (at least I think) is that you cant trust others BECAUSE of the reason of them having the chance of being maniac players, and not full out RPG players. But thank you for your input!

I too, have friends that ive known for 3+ YEARS that would try to kill me for the same reasons, that's why I only play with the ones that take games (such as this one) seriously. Thank you for your input!

I remember one guy very early on when I first started playing. At the time NEAF was still full of military gear and I came up just as someone else server hopped and came running out of a hangar. He comes running at me yelling friendly and shooting at me at the same time. It was probably the worst attempt at deception I have ever seen in my life. My five year old could do better. Who would fall for someone yelling friendly /WHILE/ they shot at you?

... Thats called a joke.

And if even for a second you thought he was serious.......

If you are trolling you get some bonus points for this. Because it makes me so angry that there is the faintest possibility that someone could actually be...
