Any of you guys wonder what time period dayz is in.

Recommended Posts

a year post Soviet union break up would have been fantastic.

Really unique time period full of turmoil , misery and suffering. It would explain why they were also unable to contain the virus.

Modern day is just done far too much looking into the past is a great way to make the game unique.

Might have missed that " turmoil , misery and suffering". I always thought people were happy when the iron curtain fell and communism collapsed.

All the weapons currently in game were produced during or before the 90's. Although soon the UMP45 will be added, which was first produced in the late 90's

Funny, The FNP 45 AKA FNX45 (in game) was the first pistol added to the game and it was made in 2012. Also, if you look at Epi pens you will notice they expire, THIS MONTH in 2015.  dont believe it, Look at your epi pen :P

So the game is meant to be in current Days

I am talking mainly about the Instability, bread lines, and general uncertainty of the whole situation.

While I would imagine there was alot of hope there was also alot of unknowns due to no longer being under the veil of a political structure that has had a grip on satellite nations for decades.

What of it the mp5 in game was made and designed in 1991.

We've had this thread over and over. I cant look now, but in the past threads I have posted that the epi-pen in game has an expiration date printed on it. You can go back from this date, because epi pens have a given shelf life to which the exp date wouldve been calculated. This gives you a date when the epipen was created ingame. IIRC, i deduced the game was taking place in at least 2014.

I remember that post of the Epi-pen and the date on it. I think this was on oversight at most, as it wouldn't make sense to have the game play in 2014 and have only a post communist infrastructure + technology. But then again, who knows what's to come?

Like I said, I'd totally dig it if Dayz played in the present day. We could have some interesting additions + fun places that look a bit different. But that would mean more urban development all over the map. Hell, I'd probably remodel old Cherno and Elektro completely if it was possible. That would seem a bit over-the-top at this time. However, something like new commercial centers with specialised shops (clothes, hunting, shopping, bowling, restaurants, parking lots...) would totally be possible and could be placed at any suitable area near a city. Since these areas look generic in real life too, it could be more or less the same model used all over the map.

Also, sorry I didn't see the topic discussed before. I did a forum search on time period and such but didn't come up with results.

Im sure some one will make a mod of it if anything or if they are inspired enough about this topic.

We've got the German MP5K that alone says its not before the 90s and long after the fall of Communism.

Some of you guys apparently never visited a post soviet country. ;)

The infrastucture in places looks just the same as in chernarus, if not even worse.

Especially in more rural provinces, 2015 didn't have much of an effect on the technology and infrastucture.

I've seen it in poland, hungary, czech republic etc. - so for me its not hard to believe dayz is set in modern days.

I will admit i certainly have not... yet I see rl dayz videos made by kids running around in places that look exactly the same, and these videos are being made present day.  So I presume, that there are still post soviet looking areas of the world in 2015 that look exactly like what we see ingame.

Guys, take a look at the video reports from the recent fires in Siberia. Those places are stuck in ww2 era.

Check out videos from Ukraine-Russian rebels conflict. South East Ukraine looks like Chernarus.

Btw I was traveling through central Czech Republic two weeks ago. I can tell you, the landscape looks amazingly similar to Chernarus. I know they actualy copied a region in CZ to make Chernarus map, but to see it in real life was awesome.

Judging by the fact that computers are present in houses, i would say sometime after 1999.

There was a thread posted by someone who went to the BI studios that had a video they shot that showed how they used the surrounding areas as inspiration for the game; unfortunately, I can no longer find that thread, but I did find another one which has a link to pictures posted on an imgur account that shows much of the same stuff that the video did (only without the transitions to show how the RL objects compare to in-game ones). You might be a bit surprised to see just how similar the area is to the game, and these photos were obviously taken rather recently.

Images on this link are amazing (takes you to a thread with links to imgur)

Props to ARMA developers for making Chernarus like this. That must have been huge undertake back then.

What's funny is how much Chernarus reminds me of rural Maine.

Pretty sure it's been said by at least one of the devs that it takes place in the modern day, or the earliest it could be is 2013, or at least that's when the infection started.  There's also the expiration dates on the epi pens, which I think is 2014, though technically speaking they're probably still good after the expiration date but it's considered unsafe by most with high standards.
