Is DayZ really set in fictional Ukraine?

Recommended Posts

I thought it was Russia but then noticed what looked like a Ukrainian flag on the shoulder of a military zombie? Has anyone looked into this? Is it Ukraine and not Russia?

This is the flag of Chernarus

But Chernarus is a "region" so could well be a fictional region in Ukraine? I mean soldiers wear national flags not regional ones.

OK, not a great picture but it looks like at best the flag is upside down. Maybe green instead of blue.
Still might be trying to indicate Ukraine instead of Russia though.

Geographically, Chernarus is set in the Usti nad Labem region of the Czech Republic, so neither Ukraine nor Russia.

That's pretty convincing right there. But could it be coincidence? Czech road signs never use cryllic alphabet, so the road signs in Dayz (all written in Cryllic) would not appear that way if it was meant to be eastern Europe.  It would be more Russian or Ukraine, Belarussia places like that.

While Chernarus is geographically placed in Czech Reublic, it can fictionally be set in either Russia or Ukraine.

I think the signs are written in Cyrilic just to match with the eastern european theme

This, yes. The geographical setting must not necessarily match the theme of the map. And yes, Czech Republic never used the cyrillic alphabet, nor was it ever a part of the sovjet union ( though it was a warsaw pact country ).

But Easter Europe doesn't use Cryillic. Only Russia and Ukraine really. (anywhere ex-USSR)

Im holiding onto the feeling that its meant to be a fictional Ukraine (Also "Cherno"..Chernobyl)? Anyway I guess it is what you make of it. There is no right or wrong answer, just thought that was a Ukrainian flag on the Zombie when I saw him.

It's not intended as any specific country. It is a fictional ex-soviet union state. It could theoretically be any one of those.

Imagine being that guy living in the Czech who is able to go to the in game spot where his actual house is.

Given that the mapdesigners only took the topographic info of the region, this could be a very dissapointing experience :)

The history of fictional Chernarus was outlined rather well by another forum member not long ago. It stems back to Arma 2, which is considered canon for the purposes of DayZ lore.

EDIT: found it: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/206899-community-based-chernarus-history/

I would look at it as simply an "ex-Soviet state" and don't make it any more complicated than that. For the record, "cherno" means "black" in Russian, just as "belaya" (or the prefix "bel-") means "white". For example, Belarus = white Russia... Chernarus, then, means "black Russia". You'll see this theme repeated everywhere, including the cigarette ads you see on billboards :)

Not true actually. Some of the cities in the game are very close to what they (used to) look like in real life. Even some buildings in the game are modelled and placed according to the real life counterpart (the big rusty barn type thing near sobor for example).

What's interesting about this topic is that in many ways Ukraine has become more like Chernarus since Arma 2 was released than the other way around. That Chernarus then may remind you of Ukraine is more an accident of recent politics than design. But as people are saying above, it's an entirely fictional setting that only borrows from real-life settings (and a number of them, not just one) for a feeling authenticity.

Speaking from the Polish perspective, it looks like Chernarus is just a generic fictional country in the area of Eastern Europe, probably ex-Soviet Union (as evidenced by the Cyrilic, although it was not used in the Baltic ex-Soviet states but used in non-USSR Bulgaria). The flag is not Ukrainian, but definitely looks like inspired by it. And as Tatanko pointed out, Chernarus just means 'black Russia', a wink to Belarus, 'white Russia'. So more a general inspiration than a 'fictional Ukraine'. Think Austin Powers' 'Kreplachistan' or any other Cracovia, Ruritania and what have you.

I would say Chernarus is like a mix of Czech Republic/Russia. The location is based on a real region in the northern Czech Republic, but the names of all the cities are in Russian, and in some cases are even named after real towns/cities in Russia.

As far as I'm aware, the Chernarus map is very roughly based off some where in the Czech Republic. This is by no means for certain, just from what I've seen/heard.

Couldn't you guys post some of the info on Chernarus on the main website and kill some of this silly speculation?

I just Google mapped it and zoomed in on Ústí nad Labem-Neštěmice - train tracks are in the same place, and some buildings seem to match.

This is really cool.

-------------

One way or another, DayZ can either keep using this map or not - but until the developers leave the Arma coding for stuff as simple as tall grass disappearing at distances (and, thus, not providing any camo when the total opposite would be true), this game is frustration galore.

I really believe that the devs are simply living off of the proceeds we all paid to play... there is no attempt to make the 'game' better, and they string us along forever with minor fixes in a gaming engine that just isn't right.

According to this picture a point in Chernarus is about 2172km away from Moscow. Thats way further than Ukraine or the Czech Republic. Countries with this distance are (no all of them):

  • Belgium
  • Italy
  • Albania
  • Turkey
  • Iraq
  • Iran
  • Turkmenistan
  • Uzbekistan
  • Kazakhstan

Ah yes, I forgot about that roadsign, I've seen it as well. Well, that would put Chernaus somewhere in Central Asia, wouldn't it?

Pretty damn much. I wish people would actually bother or at least give a shit about where it at all came from (ArmA2). :D

One more thing - this image is taken S of Lopatino and the avatar is facing West. That could suggest that Moscow is past Lopatino in the general North(ish) direction. So maybe it's the Caucasus area, Armenia or Azerbaijan. Or the other side of the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan/Uzbekistan/Kazakhstan.
