No more Towns

Recommended Posts

I've just finished reading the new Dev-Blog and found out that there will be another major town in the middle of the map, another two villages near the NW airfield etc. Please, please no more cities! Let the wilderness be vast and unspoiled by the repetitive same looking towns, spread in every corner of the map. I love open fields, never-ending forests and in the end the towns also - but on the coast and not so many of them.

If you're looking for the new way how to let your map designers to earn their money, please try to make the existing locations more unique (like the swamp on the cost added by the SA version), also those already mentioned towns could look less repetitive/same looking, forests could have some broken trees/logs in them (that would take some time).

Thank you.

I can handle a few more small towns. Just a few.

Don't really see a need for more major cities either. The density is starting to feel too high already.

I'd like seein some bigger towns above the NWAF and Gvodzno  also they cut put some smallers really high in the north.

I partially agree with you. They should make more unique towns. Like Novodmitrovsk, or Elektro, just in smaller size. I wouldn't mind if they added a huge river across the map (but that's not gonna happen).

Yesterday while traveling at night I thought about idea of creating some creepy anomalies or voices. I mean, making a game more horror than just ordinary COD style PvP with a huge map. It would be scary to see a ghost or some zombie stuck in a fallen tree screaming etc. Crows and owls would help a lot to create creapier atmosphere at night.

Now I never hid a tent anywhere in the few hours I played the mod, but if we get more towns, just where am I supposed to hide anything? It's not just tents, think about zucchini fields, ...

EDIT: Oh, and isn't extended barricading adding completely new buildings that should remain hidden, too? What about other wilderness stuff like fishing? I fear there will be only a few ponds left that are not really close to towns at some point...

I welcome some more small villages to be added to north west.

And one bigger town somewhere in the middle also sounds interesting.

On the other hand we might be getting close to the point, where no other villages/towns are needed and yes, we need also some wilderness for hunting and RPing hermit and ofc hiding of the tent cities which will be hard as hell since those tents are huge and not very camo'ed (fingers crossed for military tents).

I don't agree with "no more towns" but I agree with "more and more interesting wilderness". However, having a lot of empty space does not make for interesting gameplay so there should be some aspects worth going there:

  • semi-random locations:
    • helicopter crash sites
    • other vehicle wrecks
    • deer stands and other small buildings
    • caves
    • etc.
  • wild animals:
    • to gather resources from (e.g. by hunting)
    • as potential danger (e.g. bears, vipers)
    • as potential companions (e.g. dogs, horses)
  • wilderness as source for some of the rarer natural resources:
    • food (e.g. berry bushes, mushrooms)
    • poisons and drugs (e.g. berry bushes, mushrooms)
    • crafting materials (e.g. special kinds of wood, leaves or herbs)

Imho there is enough room for a few new towns. On the other hand, making places look more unique also sounds pretty sexy. Hope we'll see both.

I would not mind more towns if they expanded the map more. I would like to explore more of the Arma 2 Map Especially into the West and NW part of the map.

This is what I want as well. The devs have already expanded the map to the north pretty substantially, so I'd hope they'd continue that expansion to the West as well. Allow there to be some unspoiled wilderness and add some new, unique towns.

Oh thats what I dream, setting my own site somewhere in the forest, garthering supplies, hoping that no one stumbles there.

What I'd like to see? All of the above (more unique locations, crash sites, random event/building areas that aren't ever the same) but..

More of the map pressed EAST and SOUTH .. odd I know, but basically extending out the water and putting in damaged but floating ships as well as starting work on underwater locations so down the line they can add a scuba suit / air tanks for the obvious tactical advantage getting around without being seen, the simple interest in the sights, and going through broken underwater vessels for badly damaged supplies / salvage parts that can be use for repairs .. with the obvious dangers of underwater diving. (searching a underwater carrier for hele parts that are salvageable, cars that went off bridges for basic parts, search for metal scrap that can be cleaned, for compass parts that can be used to repair compasses, for gun parts to repair weapons, so on so forth. While all the parts could be found on the surface, it'd be just one of those extra ways that's out of the way and difficult to take advantage of.)

Obviously all things found underwater would be more 'parts' than anything functional, and require cleaning atop being fairly rare in general to find anything worthwhile, but it'd just be .. in my opinion, something unique to bring into the game down the line. (Believe me, I know the odds of it happening are about as slim as could be, but still a fun thought ;D)

And to add, it would give you a reason to go to the forests, you just might stumble upon a camp site, stockpiled with a lot of goodies.

Forget all this north and west expansion....lets kill 2 birds with one stone

1, add river

2, add landmass

If you haven't seen the "coast" in the ACR Arma 2 dlc, check out a you tube vid. IRL the coast is just a river and in that DLC we got the land on the other side. Really felt different, in a good way though, I could just imagine people fighting across it, camping on the other side ect ect.

They wouldn't even have to expand the map boarder much and it gives mod vets a whole new landmass to explore, a river, and a place for them to go nuts with new towns :)

There was a big town to the NW of the airfield, it was taken out in the 46 update. I'm sure it will return..

They should have a GIANT amusement park but it needs to be in the wilderness overgrown with trees and other stuff to give it the sense of decay and being long forgotten.

Creepy settings and stuff

The problem you have is there is probably a dedicated section of the dev team that specifically does this work and pretty much nothing else, so as long as they exist you will keep finding more and more town and cities being added.

Personally I agree with you, they need to stop adding more towns. Instead they should focus on fixing the various problems in existing urban areas.

The first map is incomplete in the first place, though. All of the space in the north was there. If you notice, on the top right, the map does not include the peninsula northeast of NEAF and cuts out around Skalka in the NW. Which was there in the mod.

The original map is incomplete in the first place. Many of the vanilla Chernarus maps online do not include the northern-most reaches of Chernarus for some odd reason.

They haven't really added any additional surface area to the map.

EDIT - I checked, the "original" map used in that/your overlay is missing a roughly 2x15 square kilometer area in the north. The xxx, 000 through xxx, 020 grids are not there.

Nah, the big ocean is part of the lore and makes the game more interesting. What would they do with Skalisty Island, or the big shipwreck?

The only reason that the ACR map had that terrain was because Chernarus is based on a real part of the Czech Republic and the ocean ingame is really just a river. It was a lot easier for them to just add those remade parts of Chernarus than make a brand new map, since it was an Army of the Czech Republic DLC.

On topic, while I wouldn't entirely say adding new towns or locations is a bad thing, I definitely think the wilderness has been marginalized enough. What I'd really prefer is that existing towns get more buildings and new models, rather than just being remade. The only problem with that is that the modelers have to create them and make a collision model, but hopefully it'd be worth it.

Another interesting idea is to actually focus on the wilderness. Adding downed trees, different shrubs and bushes, more rocks, maybe a few old overgrown or destroyed houses, possibly some vehicle/tank wrecks from the ArmA 2 campaign. Some more small ponds would be nice, too.

Otherwise they could just try and expand the map even further out, but that uses up a lot of resources and takes a lot of time.

Yeh that's kinda my point, we sorta have a river already....we just need the other side filling in. Skilasty Island....not sure if that would still be there, just at a wide point in the river. Would probs have to loose the ship wreck. But what about the sea makes the game more "interesting". To me its nothing but wasted space left over from A2 for boats and recreating costal assaults. For Dayz, where we don't have figates and aircraft carriers, its just unused space that could be much better used imo :)

Ahhh but according to a tweet, I think it was a tweet, from Mr. Hall, we'll have boats as well as other vehicles.  We don't need destroyers and aircraft carriers just to have water, aka the ocean/sea.

Yes! Let the repetitive same looking wilderness be unspoiled by the repetitive same looking towns.

Perhaps everything is made non-repetitive once the development hits another stage.
