Regarding Northwestern Chernarus

Recommended Posts

So, after quite a while playing this game, I've noticed something strange. Almost the entirety of NW Chernarus (sorta from the north of the NWAF and everything to the right all the way to Cernaya Polana, or however it's called) is empty.

Aside from weird, winding highways that lead nowhere and a metric ton of dirt roads that also lead nowhere, the northernmost section of the map is devoid from anything remotely interesting. Even zombies don't spawn there, and I swear that in my whole DayZ experience I've met something like 10 people in that area. It's just empty, useless space.

So, is this intentional? Does the zombie spawn rate drop because there are no buildings, or is the area left intentionally empty so it can be developed further down the line? Because at this point, it's just a vast expanse of... nothing but holding W.

The roads are only placeholders as there's gonna be towns and settlements in these parts eventually.

yeah, the devs (mainly senchi and his team) are going right to left along the northern part of the map filling in that part

Preserve the forests! Us wild wilderness denizens need our Sasquatch stomping grounds!

The whole northern extension is a WIP,  - towns and other stuff will pop up from time to time in updates i am sure.

Are you talking about the Western corridor / strap ie: edge of map?  As above, most of the Northern strap is a work in progress.  The west has quite a lot in terms of cities etc, and it wouldn't make sense to have half a city terminate at the map border into a clear deliniation of grass and hills...

The unnamed town north of the bus station has been competely removed, with the exception of a rather lonely looking water pump. Now even some of the outbuildings further east have been taken away. From the look of many of the roads in between there and the north east, the whole thing has been earmarked for urban sprawl...

There used to be a spawn point where Novo is now and I'd wonder why there was basically an urban road grid in the middle of nowhere.

I'm not a huge fan of this, as I like the far north's sense of sparsity. Also, with tents, persistence, etc, at this rate where the hell is anyone actually going to hide anything?

Gotta agree that the city-mass has increased rather drastically since the mod. I hope they're not adding any more major cities - don't really think we need large cities now that we have the distributed police stations (which are great for the map imo) and the options for hunting and fishing and other activities not involving looking for a can of beans in a house.

Correct! I originally pointed out in the 0.47 experimental thread that they had begun adding things like gas stations and rest stops to the "northern highway" that goes from Svetlo to the unnamed town in the NW. They'll be back to work filling that in once we are in August :)

Absolutely. The north is never going to be as wild as it was in the mod, but I think they are working towards a nice balance.

You do have a valid concern. In the threads that popped up about tents being added here on the forums, we've gotten into a discussion about where exactly one would hide a tent. It's not an easy question to answer, really.

I doubt we'll see any more really large cities like Novo. A lot can be predicted by studying the progress that has been made so far versus what has been outlined in advance on the map. We already know of Belaya Polana ("White Meadow") being added around [141 003] in the NE and the unnamed town at [014 033] in the NW for sure. I imagine there will be small towns like Dobroe added in several places, such as (east to west):

-[092 007]

-[066 008]

-[049 002]

I also see them adding a bigger town the size of Karmanovka right around the major intersection at [078 027] above Gvozdno (EDIT: and a town called Smirnovo somewhere in the NE as well). We will also see unique non-town areas pop up I'm sure, given how they've been filling in the northern highway near Novo. Things like farms and tiny unnamed villages even smaller than Dobroe. There are a number of different places that still need more work too, with [013 011] and [109 019] being perfect examples.

I've also tossed around the idea of [030 024] becoming a golf course, but I'm only really half-serious. Who knows what that area will become, I just happen to think it looks like a golf course on the map :P You never know. The new quarry at [086 021] was just a patch of dirt until they changed the elevation and made it a hole in the ground.

Thanks, good info. Dobroe size or smaller is great imo - the map can handle a few more towns like that and still make you feel alone and lost from time to time.

I'm all for a golf course, if they implement playing golf in the game of course. Good break, playing a few rounds of golf in between the survival and zombie slaying.

No problem. As a heavy contributor to the wiki, I do a lot of unnecessary exploration and staring at the map haha.

Can you imagine playing a calm round of golf with your buds when a random group of zombies starts chasing after you? "Dammit, not again!"

I would almost rather that they implemented football since it's so universally regarded and there are already several football fields. Who doesn't want to blow off some steam over a friendly match of soccer? :)

Hmmm. I'd still prefer golf to soccer. Mainly because I'd love to see a calm upper-classey golf game attacked only for the golfers to pull out their own automatic weapons and return fire. And if a few zombies made it onto the course - I guess hitting them could somehow be worked into the point system:
