Anyone else think DayZ should switch engines?

Recommended Posts

Rocket spends 2 months in mount Everest, and then leaves the dev team. What a good leader. ._.

You should work on your reading comprehension. He never said he's leaving the dev team.

And FrostDMG, are you for real? Are you SERIOUSLY going to be that much of an entitled little kid? Rocket should cancel his lifelong dream because of a fucking video game mod? Jesus.

Rocket owes nobody here ANYTHING at all.

Did I say that he should cancel the trip? No.

I don't know exactly when le Everest trip was booked, however, if he booked it before DayZ exploded - i.e before BI came with the cash monay, then sure that's pretty legit.

If however the trip was booked once he saw his mod exploding.... That's weak man...

Complete nonsense.

Either you got DayZ mod for free or you jumped on the bandwagon and bought a 2009 game to play a free game modification and you somehow thought this somehow entitled you to make decisions for Rocket. Not only did you fail too keep your expectations in check, your entitlement also grew to deranged proportions, where you thought you have some kind of veto right to the development and release of a nonexisting product and Rocket's future career.

You paid 0 bucks for DayZ mod.

You paid 30 bucks for the standalone.

You bought a game, not a person.

And the 30 bucks didn't go to rocket, they went to Bohemia. When you bought the SA (against rocket's recommendations), you didn't buy any promises from rocket.

LOL! Being logical makes me entitled ok...

So, here's this little mod I made, still in alpha, very buggy.

Oh wow people are liking what I made...

Holy shit! Looks like I've created the most successful and original mod in recent history...

I should probably work like a madman to perfect my creation... On second though, I'm off to climb the Everest. YOLO!

The title says it all. As I read more and more about all the restrictions it has, and how difficult it makes everything for the most part, it gets increasingly annoying. I believe Dean said that they might change the engine later on. I for one really hope they do.

EDIT:

Yes, I am completely aware engines take a long time to transition to/make. I simply asked for opinions on what could be considered a problem on DayZ. Yes, the engine of course has many advantages, but there are also a lot of problems. I'm just going off what Dean said on a video I watched somewhere that they might switch engines down the line.

You "believe" Dean said they "might" switch the engine it in a video you saw "somewhere"

a little bit vague, i might say

can you point out the source of this?

You got something for free and then you started making demands.

Definition of entitlement.

No. I don't feel entitled to anything.

However, when a lead developer leaves for a yolo holiday, you become worried about the game you're waiting for.

What does yolo holiday even mean?

Sounds like you believe dropping $100,000 on a trip to the top of Mt. Everest is something you just do on a whim.

It's pretty simple why they keep it. Bohemia knows the engine inside and out, and it really suits the game well. Huge terrains, real time light cycle, the best ballistic model in games period, oh, and it looks good too. Pretty much perfect for DayZ.

I think the best engine for this game would be GTA 4's engine.

Think on GTA 4 as a zombie game, now you know the possibilites.

Best ballistics model?  If having a ballistic model is enough to be the best, then yeah, I guess.  The ballistics aren't anything particularly impressive.  They factored in bullet drop and marginal penetration.  It isn't like they have invested an immense amount of effort into the concept.

The engine is amazing.  End of story.

Do your research and stay with the tour before jumping on the bandwagon.

Research done, testing complete, result: No, it's not! And you are an accommodated clueless.

Definitive end of story.

Guys, nobody seems to have offered an alternative to VR3... So many of you think its so god damn inferior and yet you won't suggest an alternative.

GtaV isn't even on PC atm, also GTA multiplayer suports very few people and it's not first person friendly.

If you watch VBS 3 videos and combine the things that DayZ is going to do I got to say there isn't better engine for this. So many things are possible.

No engine is better for dayz than the current engine and arma 3 engine.

I mean what other engine does combat justice at 10m and 2000m

I think they made a huge mistake using this engine, but it's too late to change.

I'm a new player to the series, never played the ARMA mod, just found the alpha through Steam.  I love the direction the game is taking, but the engine itself is a massive problem.  Combat as it stands feels absolutely horrible;  melee combat is simply a swing-and-pray scenario, with very little ability to aim and poor hitboxes.  Ranged is slightly better, but issues with desync make it an effort in futility at times as well.  Physics at this moment are non-existent, AI is questionable at best, and then we get to performance issues, which this engine has in volumes.

While I see that the team is making progress, it's been said many times that this is basically a new engine, and from my research, it seems that's the case.  However, it's a "new" engine built on an old, out-dated engine.  Had the team simply worked on their own engine from the ground up, I think the game might not be as far along, but would have more potential.  Instead, I see the game being further along, but future additions will require significant amounts of recoding, if it can be done properly at all.

Hello there

The RV engine , I dont believe is an "old and out of date engine".

Yes there's certainly some legacy areas which could use some love but one has to remember it's pedigree.

It's not and never was nor never will be a twitch shooter.

It seems folk are trying to push that mechanic onto the game.

Ive been happily blowing away folk online since the OFP days. The only issue I have is that my ageing machine can only squeeze 15-20 fps out of it which makes the game feel far more clunky than when running on a decent rig.

Dont forget the dev team are planning to rewrite the interface so "clunky" aspects like the scrollwheel system will be a thing of the past.

Dont forget its their (BI's) engine and the dev team have far more access to its inner workings than any mod ever did/could.

I fully believe that what you are playing now will be a very differet beast to that of the released game.

Rgds

CQC in the Arma series is pretty horrible when you are coming from a BF/CS background, but I get what you mean. It can do both long-range and close-quarters combat reasonably well.

Yeah... It's their engine alright. Think how many YEARS it would take them to develop their own engine with zero foundation... YEARS. Then they would have to develop the game.

It's far better that they stick to what they know, even though the engine can be a bit clunky as we've seen with the mod and SA development.

And have delayed the standalone by 2 years.

It wasn't an option, not matter, how much you fantasize about it.

yea, possibly would have delayed it. Or maybe using a more refined version of the engine would have actually helped in some departments. Not sure about using the Chenarus map in ARMA 3 version of the engine but I'm sure it's possible with some tweaks. BTW, how do you know it "wasn't an option"? You have a link you'd like to share? I'm just curious to hear the developer's reasons.yea but you're nobody- hell, you're probably a zombie. I'd like some info from someone on the developer's team. Not saying you're wrong, I just want to hear their opinion on the matter.

You asked for a link.

Exactly what I said, said by someone else:

rocket2guns Rocket [score hidden] 17 minutes ago

but why not try going to a new engine entirely? Is that feasible at all?

Anything is possible. However, that would take a very significant amount of work. The entire project would have to stop work for, at the very least, two years. There would be almost no playable output for the majority of that two years. That is not an option for us, but others are more than welcome to try that route.

DayZ uses it's own engine. It is just as different from Arma2 as Arma3 is from Arma2. We no longer internally consider DayZ part of the RV engine. Indeed, it is a mix of two engines internally (the other used to make carrier command).

DayZ isn't just RV anymore.
