Dagwood 680 Posted April 29, 2014 Been rocking a red hoodie, beige cargo pants, black baseball cap and a courier bag to try and appear friendly and or a newish spawn (some consider synonymous). Getting frustrated at the lack of space for RP items in my courier bag (matches, cooking gear, extra tools for fellow survivors, etc). My question is: would a blue taloon backpack appear more or less friendly/newbish than my courier bag? Or should I just upgrade to an improvised backpack? (Which I consider to look more militant/threatening than most other packs).

Dagwood 680 Posted April 29, 2014 And the hoodie and suboptimal backpack are an attempt to look like I have less than the guy with olive drab/camo and a hunter backpack. New question: does the taloon backpack make me more approachable to a level that warrants choosing it over the superior (in my opinion) improvised backpack? bastins 14 Posted April 29, 2014 I have to agree with C.O. Wolf, you're way over-thinking things. Now, if you're having fun doing what you're doing, then by all means keep it up. In which case, I would say just basically go for more of a recreational outdoorsman look rather than an armored-up military look.
Dagwood 680 Posted April 29, 2014 Wait.... So you're telling me that people in this game will even shoot at friendly looking players? While I absolutely hear what you both are saying, I think towns off of the coast on hardcore servers tend to be populated by players that are a little less trigger happy. And I carry matches and other "dead" items to prepare myself for when carrying these things is necessary. Only having room for one mag and one stack of bandages makes gameplay more difficult and ultimately more rewarding. It also postpones the, "I have everything I'll ever need in my massive backpack... What now?" Moment. Revised question: does an improvised backpack appear more or less "threatening" than a taloon pack? Based upon your own experiences with players wearing either (forget the shoot everything people. I don't encounter them)
qww 287 Posted April 30, 2014 a new spawn can carry a handgun in his jeans, a new spawn can knock you out in 1 punch. nothing makes anyone look friendly, to a player with experience. if you got your orange raincoat, green tracksuit trousers with stripe, and white hard hat and we bump into each other in the wrong situation, it all means nothing
pillock 850 Posted April 30, 2014 It's not an issue of whether the improvised pack looks more or less threatening than a Taloon; the problem with using it is that other people think it looks cool, and they want it off of you!

There is no such thing as looking more friendly or less friendly for me personally. Everyone is a potential threat.

Awww hes still sweet and innocent, what a lovely chap.. There really arent a lot of them left in DayZ. We should protect him since soon he'll be an endangered species... Ps, Dude, reality check... soulfirez 901 Posted April 30, 2014 Its sad but what many of them are telling you is the truth just wear what you like what you find what you think is best there is no friendly cloths there is no hero cloths there is just what ever they will burry you in when eventually you cross a PvPer or most likely a KoSers path ( yeah there is a big difference if you dont know what it is your a KoSer lol). But in answer to your question how on earth can you think an improvised back pack looks more mil than a taloon its a bloody shambled survival look it does look cool though so i agree with the guy who said some will shoot ya just to try it out on themselves( that be the guy to dumb to makee one himself and there plenty )
Dagwood 680 Posted April 30, 2014 Was checking my map in a red brick building (just south east of krasnostav) tonight trying to guide a friend in to me when I heard footsteps and heavy breathing. I closed the map to see a hoodied and helmeted player standing before me with his blazer shouldered. After nearly shitting myself I explained my situation to him, informed him of the loot situation at NEAF, and we parted ways. While many of you think that coast dwelling PVPers are the only people who play this game, there are some players who approach different players with different intentions based upon observations. Some of those observations are based upon their actions, and others are based upon the weaponry and garb of the survivor. "I shoot everything because I can't handle the risk of controlling a face to face encounter." If you see me first I'm screwed anyway so obviously I don't care how I look to you. This interest I have in appearing more friendly is for players who understand that player interaction makes this game exciting; not the glitchy, exploit ridden gunfights.

Really, we don't, and we play on hardcore to.I had over 600 hours in the mod before the SA released, so no need to talk down to me. I've gone through the shoot everything to insure my survival stage. When you learn to talk face to face with armed, hostile players while doing it in a way that puts you in little danger because of superior positioning and effective communication skills, you will understand how foolish your black and white thinking and playstyle truly are.
hombrecz 832 Posted April 30, 2014 This interest I have in appearing more friendly is for players who understand that player interaction makes this game exciting; not the glitchy, exploit ridden gunfights. Don't be like that! Legit players can have a lots of good legit firefights! I surely had some, as I never try to intentionaly exploit bugs like jumping into walls and sh*t and majority of folks is the same. I refuse to think that most players are exploiting, not talking about 3rd person camera nor gamma/brightness setting here. But you are right that human interaction, even that without firing a single shot, is also very rewarding. Me and buddy met fresh spawned dude in Berezino Lumbermill. We chatted a bit, advised him there is a SKS on the shipwreck and parted ways. Then like 20 minutes later, at the roof of Hospital, we met like 5 foreign dudes. It turned out, they were buddies of that freshie we met earlier. He told them we are cool, so we traded a bit (PU scope for saline bag) and parted our was. Bottom line, if you want to be friendly player, do it. Don't just blindly run towards folks yelling "friendly". Be more careful, watch them to be able to decide, what kind of people they are. Also don't wear any masks, many consider it to be sign of bandits. Also maybe stay away from camo gear. Regarding backpacks....well upgraded courier one might be considered to be more "camo" so maybe running with talon backpack would be better for you.Ofc when you are at the coast, some freshie might want to beat you to death for anything you have, which is a bit sad.
Dagwood 680 Posted April 30, 2014 ^^thank you for the thoughtful response. Yes, the right clothing guarantees nothing. But I think what you're saying about the improvised backpack being camouflaged and thus a bit more militant is right. I guess the cost benefit analysis comes down to being harder for player hunters to see as the pro of the courier bag against the more civilian, non competitive look of the taloon pack making me appear less likely to shoot at someone who tries to talk to me. Such a difficult, insignificant decision haha
hiniberus 122 Posted April 30, 2014 I'd like to think anything that's not military gear = less likely to get shot. Simple as that. So you can go about in a rider's jacket, black wool coat, checked shirt, whatever, hoodie included too. Then for pants, again, anything not TTSKO. Limited to Cargo pants for best bland effectiveness (and fashion if going for wool coat/hoodie/rider jacket (Brown hunter pants are an exception), hunter pants for checked shirt) With regards to the backpack, briefcase/courier bag/improvised backpack are what I'd suggest you limit yourself to. Want to take it to another level, keep yourself to the Blaze or full-barrel shotgun along with the revolver and chest holster (most civilian like pistol atm, personal opinion)
Deathlove 2286 Posted April 30, 2014 You are over thinking it. As long as you aren't fully geared or wearing "bandit clothes" (payday mask, etc) you will look more friendly. Personally I just day "F*** it" and go fully geared cause the way I see it is as long as I act friendly if someone tries to kill me they would have tried it no matter what I was wearing. Still wont wear masks though.Im sure if they do add toxins to the air were going to at least have to wear the respirator.
liquidsnake 275 Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) I'm trying to do the same as OP. Maybe more for RP than looking friendly, but I'm going for a survivor look which isn't menacing. I'm thinking of going for a hardcore hunter look with summer hunter pants and maybe green raincoat. Maybe I'll recreate the good ol' hero skin. Regarding not getting killed cause you're looking friendly, it simply won't work. I don't know why, but everyone is so hostile in SA compared to the mod. My guess is the influx of non-arma players caused it. When the mod first got out they all worked together to survive the zeds :lol:Some new ones should realise that this isn't some sort of PvP paradise. We need more heroes or even survivors, as there are way too many bandits now. I feel like even the somewhat respected hero skin from the mod won't halt the ridiculous trust issues most seem to have. I miss giving blood bags to anyone who needed it, I miss the whole hero vs bandit thing going on on some servers. I also feel like there's a certain lack of communication, which also holds friendliness back. 70% seems to be oblivious to the ability to type in direct chat. My last char was a fully kitted hero, just like old times. I held a moderately kitted player up and gave him an FNX with every attachment and he never said a thing during the entire process. I've held up more players, never a response. I've tried to communicate with others, never a response. I even talked to a group of 7 freshies for 3 mins and they were just gazing at me with their daft eyes. Something's gone horribly wrong with SA and we need to fix it. /rantEDIT: got nothing against PvP/KoS in general, there's just too damn much of it now. A 70/30 or 80/20 bandit/survivor rate would be perfect in my eyes. Full blown heroes should be as rare as friendliness is now. Edited April 30, 2014 by The End. blacklabel79 949 Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) I recently started to "downgrade" alot earlyer than i did when i started. For now i go with courier/impru-backpack. They have a low sillouete and you can make them yourself wich i prefer over the neoncolored packs. I almost never take mountain packs since they obstruct my view looking backwards ( yeah for hardcore mode ). Now with my luck iam also sporting a pressvest. I think i throw that Thing into a bush since everyone and his mother will try to shoot me for that damm Thing. What ticks me off recently is that woolcoats as spiffy as they look cant hold up the slightest srap and they turn into a pile of ruined something. Thats a shame since i really like them :/ Edited April 30, 2014 by {Core}BlackLabel
