DayZ going to be 64-bit

Recommended Posts

they should first make things ready, like fireplace, hunting, AKM and persistent objects. What a shame, talking about 64bit, when they not even can do this!

There are different teams for different things. Just because they're working on 64bit implementation does not mean others aren't working on something else.

It's easy to say they're doing this and that wrong but unless you have hands on dealings with developing this game, there's no way anyone of us could truthfully say that they're doing things wrong.

You can't just upgrade from 32bit Windows to 64bit Windows. To move to 64bit it is a complete re-install. He may be able to use the same key(questionable) but either way it's not just a simple upgrade, unfortunately.

The key doesn't draw a distinction between 32bit or 64bit, as stated the only "real problem" is the fact u can't upgrade. Also you might wanna check your hardware if there is a Win7 64bit or at least a Vista 64bit driver available.

Somehow i think it was a bad decision to make a 32 bit Version of Win7. It was ok at times of Vista, but Win 7 would have been just right to make a straight cut and bury 32 bit Windows. Now we have 32 bits even with Win 8 and the trouble and extra work for developers and users will continue for many years.

But of course it´s all about the money for Microsoft. They want to sell as much copies as possible, even for old PC´s or outdated software.

Naah, theres plenty of companies who will never require 64-bit windows, so it was the right way to do it tbh.

Microsoft makes the big bucks on companies, not private people, so from they're point of view, its all good hehe.

Heck, half the people i know wont ever require 64-bit, because all they use a computer for is surfing the interwebs and listening to music or watching films.

I do see your point though, it would most likely be easier if it was all 64-bit, from a developers point of view, but honestly i dont know.

Following Banished development, it didnt seem like much of a hassle for the developer (a single dude) to write a code so the software could run both 32 and 64 bit, and it would figure it out it self, so i simply dont know :)

I would likes to think most gamers tend to already have 64-bit computers. In fact, been a while since I knew anyone still running 32-bit and is a gamer.

The tweet mentions 5%. Out of 1.9 million this are after all ~85.000 gamers.

And yes, at least for gamers there shouldn´t be much reasons to run on x86 OSes.

what does it mean for us? I mean who have a 32bit system windows7? can I also play it/ or do I have to upgrade to 64bit windows?

If you currently have a 32 bit version of windows 7 installed you're going to have to reformat with a 64 bit version from a buddy.  Last I knew, there is no difference between a 32bit and 64 bit key, simply the install disk...

When I originally built my computer I ordered a 32 bit version of windows 7 by mistake (yep, ima fool).  Luckily my brother was building a computer at the same time and I just used his 64 bit disk and my key.  There has never been an issue and I've reformatted several times since the original build.

I'm more interested in their work surrounding the renderer.

same here that could potentially change completely how the end game looks.

If you have a 32 bit OS and CPU (if you have a 64 bit CPU and 32 bit OS it's weird) you have 2 possibilities:

1) Change game

2) Change computer

Anyway, 64 bit should be the future so I understand the need of improvement in a game like this one.

I wonder how they will handle the fact that they sold lots of copies (I don't believe is only 5%, but that's anyway a big number and somebody with a 32 bit sistem might still buy it) with minimum specs that are going to change, leaving outside many that already bought the product.

I guess they won't be dealing with that, leaving the shitstorm to the forums.

No 32bit cpus meet the minimum system requirements anyway.

wonder what percentage of the 5% have given up already on account of the fact the game is awful played on a potato? 90% higher?

Maybe in many cases the OS Version doesn´t depend on which potato it should run. People may buy the 32 bit Version because a friend said "you don´t need x64"........ back then in 2005  Or it is cheaper so one can afford 4 more GIGABYTES of Ram instead of that mean 32 extra bits. Or they got well advised in a specialised store :o

If it happens (currently no 64 bit client exists so it's a long way off), You can use your windows 7 key for both 32 and 64bit versions so can upgrade for free. Windows XP users will have to move out of the stone age.

Ohh you can get XP 64-bit ;)

Its more a DirectX issue tbh, will it be 10/11 only or will it still support 9? Dunno.

But XP only support 9.

Although microsoft is running windows XP on life support atm, in a year its gonna be a wonderworld for viruses, malware and even "hobby activists", due to the "no more updates" policy micrsoft has.

So you are basicly right hehe.

They are doing 64-bit server for now. Which should help with server fps, and even more if possibly less required harddisk writing can be done when the database runs 64-bit aswell.

Having a 64 bit client would be awesome. When loading the whole game natively and  into memory and run it from there, would be great. Even more great  when videomemory past 2 gig can be used that way aswell.

This reminds me of fluid game play on memory upgraded amiga 500 running games greatly once loaded from the floppy disks :)
