Possible to setup controls like BF4?

Recommended Posts

I am having a hard time reassigning the keys to be more similar to Battlefield. I have been gaming since CS came out and I am used to using my right mouse button to move forward and the W key to move back. Changing the key bindings in DayZ is not like any other game I have played before and every time make a change, it pops the old keys back in there. Is there a config file I can edit to make it the way I want?

I know this game is not Battlefield and I do not expect it to be. I just want controls that I am familiar with so I can play it!

Thanks in advance!

Get used to it.

OFP, A2, and A3 all use half your keyboard.

Only half the keyboard? Hell, I had to buy myself TrackIR and a Joystick to get rid of the doublebindings.

As for the topic: It is entirely possible to completely rebind your controls, you will just need to make sure to unbind all the others beforehand.

by using a controller key binding program you can get the "essential controls" bound to your controller.

by switching presets with a default key, you can have standing/sitting options that are different and wouldn't fit on  a controller button layout.

So, change the key bindings...I use my right mouse button to walk, left Alt to move back, forward slash to zoom, middle mouse to aim, m to crouch and so on. Takes a little while to set up to your taste but you can do it. Just make sure you don't make double key bindings.

Wow, what an aggravation!

Is it possible to get a refund?

Why exactly? Because you can't figure out how to rebind keys? It is entirely possible, it even gives you feedback if you bind a key twice and why it won't work.

Post a bit more information and we will be happy to support you with your endeavours.

Steam deals with distribution anyway, you will have to contact their support.

I forgot the /s after the refund question...

I understand how to rebind keys. I have had to do it since the late 90's/early 00's (I am 38). The original Half-Life in '98 the move forward key bind was for right mouse button and move back was W. When Counter-Strike came out in 2000, they switched the default key to W. I could never get used to the W key being forward from playing HL so much before the switch. Every game I have played since CS I have had to rebind the keys and it is as simple as select the key bind and then press the desired key, then save. This game it does not work that way. Also, I have never played OFP, A2 or A3 so I was not aware of the hokey controls. I understand DayZ is in Alpha/Beta status and I accept that it is not a final release, but not having an intuitive way to bind the keys the way you want is pretty dumb.

Isn't there some config file somewhere I can edit to set it up the way I want?

I just wish prone and crouch were toggle keys. A "stand up" button is just a waste of a key.

Is there any way to bind it this way?

C:\Users\USERNAME\My Documents\DayZ (or something similar] there you can find a config file. I just wonder why you key bindings don't remain because I haven't ever had a problem with that. Check if your files are read only?

i think the z, x, and c system is good, it took me a long time to get used to arma controls, and after properly becoming used to them, i think they are well thought out and work in combat and general movement

Welp, its been almost a year since I touched this game. Opened it up, installed a bunch of updates and then tried to remap the move forward button from W to right mouse button (mouse button #2) and it still does not work in game. I can map move forward to any other key on the mouse and it works, just not the right mouse button. Is this just how it is or am I doing something wrong. I asked my buddy's son to try it on his computer and it does not work for him either. I can't believe the game is this far along in development and it still won't let you remap keys properly.

Anyone?

As others have stated here, it is all to do with ensuring all key binds for that particular key are unbound first and ensuring the correct binds are in place. It is mostly always down to user error and just presuming the game is broken with it's mechanics due to Alpha. I have seen many times, things that are clearly not broken & players that cannot or will not work it out, but rather just jump on "its broken" wagon, adamant it is not ones own error. The Arma series has been going for so long now there is a plethora of information out there which can be cross referenced for all BIS titles including Dayz SA. Google is your friend here!

I have just jumped in game and tested on your behalf WIKDMoNKY. After unbinding all keys issued to the r-mouse (secondary mouse), I have had no issue assigning hold r-mouse to run forward.

FYI settings in menu needed changing

Options/Controls/Assignments

Infantry weapons - optics & hold breath (unbind secondary mouse button)

Interact - Back (unbind from secondary mouse button)

Commanding - reveal target (unbind from secondary mouse button)

That is 4 binds just on your r-mouse. By the sounds, you have not unbound all controls before enabling walk/run forward to r-mouse. You cannot just assign a secondary mouse click to run either, you need to assign hold secondary mouse button to ensure it works correctly. When binding, do not just click your r-button but rather hold it for a second or two.

This also works for all BIS titles I have tested so far (A2/A3/TKOH/TOM).  As St Jimmy also pointed out, make sure you do not have read only in your cfg's. This will not save your new binds if read-only.

This should help out your problems  :)
