byrgesen 1341 Posted April 11, 2014 The point of this post is not to report the hacker, we have done plenty of that, but to send an alert to be careful who you share information with, it may seem harmless but could potentially have your game key stolen(as seen in arma2) and you'll have to buy a new copy of the game. Where do you think these hackers seem to get an endless supply of game keys after they are banned? Its "impossible" to steal your game key, as we saw in Arma II, since the key isnt stored in the registry anymore and the only way of getting hold of it, would be to force your way into steams security. So far, theres been 0 evidence to support people stealing DayZ SA keys, exactly like theres no evidence people are stealing Arma III keys, because its not that simple anymore. It would require you to actually "hack" your way into Steam, and if that was simple, nobody would use steam tbh. Theres no way in hell, this guy can find all your steam information, based on the country you live in lol.Steam would be out of business if it was that simple, you cant be that paranoid mate.As you mention, its only if you start giving actual valuable information about your steam account, he can use it for anything. This is exactly the reason BI chose to make Arma III and DayZ steam dependable in the first place, because it eleminates cd-key theft as we knew it. As far as i know, when they are banned they buy a new game, exactly like we see in Arma III aswell. If you can find evidence, proving me wrong, please do so mate, as ive yet to find it.
Zeppa 562 Posted April 11, 2014 (edited) I think the point people are trying to make here that point of this thread is just to "scare people", not necessary intentional but that it what it does, raises unnecessary suspisions and paranoia towards simple and nice question that is thrown around in online world every second. And when we say this has absolutely nothing to with supporting hacking etc, just saying that its not big deal in anyway. Why does it make someone who got hacks ingame more harmfull than avarage person to ask these questions?? Every joker could get some hacks in his hands on hacks if he knows how to start browser and use google.Point is there is no reason, what so ever to always expect connection between these things in the game world.HackingAsking questionsStealing identity or other infoWhen you get email from your "bank" asking your account info etc, thats when it gets malicious and everyone should have alarms ringing. Problem is there is always people to fall for these and that doesnt make it any more serious problem/issue, if some poeple are ignorant or just stupid. No regular person will fall for this sht. On a serious note, I don't claim to know exactly what his intention is, I'm just always wary about people who adamantly attempt to gain personal information from others even if it seems insignificant, specially hackers. My background is primarily in physical security/planning and criminal investigatons, I am not #1 in cyber security so I'm not 100% fluent in steams security protocols, but in most cases they will gain legitimate access to your account anyways by bits of information you volunteer+research. What I don't want to see is someone from the community get victimized, my intention is to provide a little insight to raise awareness and hopefully not see that happen. Caboose187 (DayZ) 3036 Posted April 11, 2014 Wait, so asking a/s/l to randoms in game means I'm a hacker? I do it just to be creepy
akafugitive 244 Posted April 11, 2014 (edited) Ok I see the point is totally lost on you guys, if you want to continue this thread and argue amongst yourselves it's all yours. Since this feels like I'm trying to explain calculus to an elementary student I'm moving on. To those who want to take something constructive from this, I wish you well. If you forget your password steam will send a link to your email account to change it. If you want to log in to your steam account from a new pc you need to get a code from steam in an email to verify. He won't be able to do shit with people's locations. He would need access to your email address and your steam name. The point of this thread isn't lost on people, the point is that there is no threat in someone asking where you are from in DayZ. BiGoDeViN (DayZ) 423 Posted April 11, 2014 And that would be an interesting story if he didn't use hacking and killing anyone who wasn't comfortable being surveyed as a way to obtain it.That part hurt... I'm not that old lol. Far too often people assign some non existent emotion and read what they want. You seem to have who you think I am pegged in an off tilt way, I may not structure my posts like a 16 year old but that doesn't mean I'm some old fart that thinks the Internet was created by demons and should be burnt at the stake. I deal with cases of the unlucky ones who got targeted by the criminal lottery, or ignore warnings because they are not informed. Doesn't mean everyone is stupid, they just are trusting in others because they have good intentions. I want to hear more about this criminal lottery. Could you hit me up with a message?
