pilgrim* 3514 Posted April 3, 2014 (edited) The standard thing to do - if you like crosshair - is to put a marker dot in the exact middle of your screen. This has been a normal hotshot action since FPS began You go in someone's house, you can tell what the dude likes to play by seeing that little dot. OK - so this guy is a Serious Fanatic about his FPS. Iv'e even seen a little bit of stick-on transparent film with range gradations marked in carefully on both sides of the point. I don't do this. Because I am a Jedi Master a clause in my contract won't let me do evil things Some mod servers didn't use the crosshair, remember? in the Mod I had a long conversation with a friend, a reformed Serbian Bandit on a Romanian server about how to to aim from the hip with a pistol or an assault rifle, first person or third person. He was GOOD, and a mean snap shooter, had some GOOD tips, .. I learned.. I practiced (damn, I practiced a lot). And isn't that how you are supposed to do it.. by LEARNING how to shoot ? xx - doesn't solve the problem of random bullet dispersion due to fatigue (running) breathlessness, and all.. where the dot jiggles around - but you should be able to figure that for yourself. The only thing I'll miss is using the dot to pick up objects on top of lockers or places where you can't get close to see them in your left-side inventory. That's a fairly common experience. But what the hell. Go for it. Edited April 3, 2014 by pilgrim
manolislp 3 Posted April 3, 2014 Well my view is that it's bad that it will be removed as people tend to draw dots on their screen or maybe they have Asus monitors which can provide you with a crosshair. I believe it can be removed from hardcore servers and left as is in the regular ones. In addition, as it has been proposed the items that are not shown in the vicinity will be impossible to get as it has helped me quite a few times finding items that were even inside the ground. (found an lrs inside the ground the other day :D)
Tatanko 5591 Posted April 3, 2014 As others have said, it can be mildly useful in helping you pick up things that won't detect via proximity in your inventory screen, but other than that it doesn't serve much purpose. I can't say it really bothered me, though.
fitzee 248 Posted April 3, 2014 (edited) Hi. Great news. It's one of the first things I always disabled in the arma series. Hip shooting is still easy enough to do within realistic ranges anyhow. Regards. Edit: I should add I never really wanted it forced on everyone, but if it was an option I would have turned mine off. Jex 1104 Posted April 3, 2014 Yeah, but what about the interaction bonus it gives? Opening gates and actually "seeing" gear that is in precarious spots is hard enough... This - make the damn doors and ladders work first and be able to grab the gear we can see easily and not the royal PITA it is now "with" the dot.
Judopunch 523 Posted April 3, 2014 Before removing crosshairs they need to fix item "detection" when viewing your inventory because that shit does not work.Im sure they will be doing that.

Katana67 2907 Posted April 3, 2014 (edited) I never understood all the controversy over the removal of hip-fire aids, in any game. It doesn't help that much. Maybe it's just me, who plays "hardcore" gametypes in every shooter I play, but I never felt in-need of artificial crosshairs. I usually just ADS. Or, when hip-fire is demanded, it ain't rocket science to figure out where your rounds are gonna' land when your muzzle is in some guy's chest (which is the only circumstance in which hip-fire should ever be prudent). A situation has never arisen where I've said to myself, "Damn, I could've won that if only I'd've had hip-fire crosshairs!" It's sort of one of those legacy items/paradigms that serves no use in modern FPS games. Yet people still slavishly think it's necessary. Similar to teamkilling (on games which actually have teams, not referring to DayZ, chill). One of those things that serves no purpose and doesn't add anything to the experience. Forrelist 236 Posted April 3, 2014 One negative I can see from this that has been posted in the thread before me is the fact that many people, myself included use that 'dot' to pick up items that appear to be out of reach, or simply do not appear in the vicinity pickup for whatever reason. There are many places: metal racks, military beds, on top of lockers and so on, that have items you cannot get without the little dot to help you.

There are many places: metal racks, military beds, on top of lockers and so on, that have items you cannot get without the little dot to help you. a workaround for this would be if you can pick up the item the dot would appear. but this vicinity problem has been a problem since the mod. there was a time you could pick up items through walls. now we have items that you just can't pick up without luring around it like an idiot. I simply leave them where they are and don't bother too much.
DarkwaveDomina 1099 Posted April 3, 2014 I understand the complaint that it might make it more difficult to pick up more hard-to-reach items, but wouldn't a better solution for that be fixing the loot?
BadContrakt 43 Posted April 3, 2014 I actually prefer the crosshair for a few reasons. It gives me an accurate and straight run. I have the Logitech G700 and I have a key bound to "Y" to make my character auto run. It's a toggle command on the G-Series program. This way I can point the dot straight down the road then walk away and get a drink or something. It works very well. It's also very good for hip-firing the M4 or any weapon for that matter. The grey dot is never actually EXACTLY where you're aiming but it's close enough when you're in CQB with another player and don't want to ADS and would rather hipfire them down. I actually prefer M4 hipfire in close quarters and feel that it is much more effective than ADS at that range. And lastly, the dot has absolutely not once ever scared me into thinking it was a zombie, player, or any other hostile anomaly.

AshleyP 121 Posted April 3, 2014 Opening gates On a tangent, I find this to be the hardest thing in the game. Opening gates. I run up to them... and then step back, step forwards, wobble the mouse until the interaction control appears. All the time wondering if it would have been quicker to just leap over the fence. AshleyP 121 Posted April 3, 2014 It's sort of one of those legacy items/paradigms that serves no use in modern FPS games. The interesting thing is that Doom didn't have crosshairs, and that was almost entirely up-close hip shooting. In fact I think that they were optional in Quake (and I remember they were thought of as a cheat at the time). My recollection is that they made sense in Operation Flashpoint and Rainbow Six and were cleverly executed, because they told you how exhausted your soldier was; the crosshairs were dynamic, and expanded as you moved around. The little dot in DayZ is just silly (and doesn't seem particularly accurate).

I feel like they may... may... have become a full paradigm with games like CS which sort of required it. I can't recall the last time I played CS (probably early 2000's) so I don't recall. Canned Muffins 82 Posted April 4, 2014 (edited) Anyone want to imagine how awful looting items that fail to register with the inventory vicinity look will now be? It at times is ridiculously tedious to grab visible items that are on cabinets and above the players model. I don't care for the dot for weapons I care about it for looting. Rather it be an optional setting for those who dislike it. Crosses fingers that loot is fixed so its not so finicky to interact with.
