TheModernGamer94 67 Posted March 27, 2014 Now ive played DayZ Standalone for 350+ hours now and made 9 Dayz vids , im finding it very hard to get positive feedback on them due to people calling me a "Bandit" but everyone has a different definition of the word , ive killed new spawns and fully geared players in circumstances but ive also made friends on DayZ in which I still play with today. I feel as if all players are "Bandits" now because you cant go through this game with the "Hero" mind set as you could have in the mod, everyone is a threat and holding someone up always leads to someone getting killed or getting there head bashed in by a new spawn. I feel as if bandits don't exist in SA as they did in the mod ive never come across player which could have killed me but didnt and held me up they will shoot you as soon as they see you. I try not too but it comes down to the mind set "It either him or me" and that fundamentally is what everyone is doing but that is what a bandit is let me know what you think if im just speaking nonsense or you agree im on my iPhone typing this so don't moan about grammar
makomachine 263 Posted March 27, 2014 In real life people don't wear t-shirts that declare them 'good guys' and 'bad guys'. When the feces hits the fan, we'll all be doing things that make us question our moral boundaries - and likely expanding them. Right now, it's a giant deathmatch of boredom - but I'm hoping soon it parallels the real world desperation of 'needing others to survive but never completely trusting anyone'. Survival pressures will create the third enemy that doesn't exist at this moment - at least that's my hope.
Publik 404 Posted March 27, 2014 Killed a few highway bandits the other day. Genuine bandits, though they weren't too smart.
tiadashi 262 Posted March 27, 2014 (edited) I don't shoot on sight, I communicate first so no not everyones a "bandit" Edited March 27, 2014 by tiadashi

hannibaldaplaya 1095 Posted March 27, 2014 lol sure you do , you cant honestly say that or you literally haven't play standalone much Some people, even after several deaths from the same action, continue doing so as long as it gets them a few good experiences. For me, it has. KOS is no fun. I prefer to talk and make encounters interesting, even if it is hostile.
Knock (DayZ) 111 Posted March 27, 2014 lol sure you do , you cant honestly say that or you literally haven't play standalone much Actually, you can definitely say that. I've communicated so many times with people in a positive way. I had a chance to straight up murder someone who was sitting down and he had a gun. When he saw me he tried to stand up, but I just said "Don't worry. I would've already killed by now if I wanted. I'm friendly." Instead of ruining his experience by killing him, we both walked away unharmed. You just have to be more open. The "It's them or it's us" mindset is probably what everybody has deep down. If he started swinging, I'll definitely kill him. But KoS just isn't any fun at all to me. I kinda feel like some people who KoS are just too scared to even attempt to enjoy the game in a more dangerous and engaging way. You are taking a risk by talking to people, but you'll never know how things could've happened if you just put a bullet in their head.
comikz 218 Posted March 27, 2014 The clan I belong to is a Hero-style clan, we will go out of our way to communicate with people (Fully geared or not.) and verify that they are either friendly or otherwise, usually we shoot the hostile players or ones that we have observed gunning down freshies on the coast, ect. It is very challenging not to go with that instinct of "Fight or flight" and just gun down people, but to me the interactions with people are far more exciting then setting up inside a building or on a hill sniping people, but each person has their playstyle, and I won't be one of those who tell others how to play, just that I don't respect those who feel the need to turn this into some open world CoD clone mmorpg, lol...
Weedz 1105 Posted March 27, 2014 (edited) I always say something to people or mess with them before I kill them .... unless I hear the words "IMA FRIENDLY IMA FRIENDLY IMA FRIENDLY"Them I just blast them in the face without a word. There are also tons of videos on youtube of people being "bandits" as you describe them and messing with people / robbing them then letting them go. tiadashi 262 Posted March 27, 2014 (edited) lol sure you do , you cant honestly say that or you literally haven't play standalone much Approaching 400 hours on SA - so ya I do - and like Aradia pointed out its worth being shot by KoS'rs for some truly FUN times interacting with people and have made some great friends who I play with doing so - shooting first only prevents you from having some truly fantastic encounters Edited March 27, 2014 by tiadashi

TheModernGamer94 67 Posted March 27, 2014 Well. They killed 2 people and were sitting on a rock.but what im saying is that makes you a bandit then right ?
Publik 404 Posted March 27, 2014 but what im saying is that makes you a bandit then right ?Not really? I kill people, sure, but I don't stick around and wait for people to come along before robbing/killing them. I guess I mean "bandit" in the "highwayman" sense? TheModernGamer94 67 Posted March 27, 2014 Well, in SA "bandit" just means "that guy that killed me".That imo is something that needs to be changed because the term is an outdated one
TheScruffyBandit 382 Posted March 27, 2014 (edited) I try. But considering EVERYONE would seemingly rather die than lose a bloody tin opener or some of their ammo, it's nearly impossible to bandit without resorting to shooting your target. They'll ALWAYS try their luck and resist. If they're really being a pain in my ass, and it's safe for me to do so... I'll kneecap them, bandage their wound so they don't bleed out and then leave them in the middle of nowhere with broken legs. Maybe that will teach them to listen to instructions the next time they're held up? Edited March 27, 2014 by TheScruffyBandit

Elle 562 Posted March 28, 2014 so I guess not too many people actually play the game as a survivor. I've got 510 hours now and I have killed one person (came at me with a knife on day one) and shot at two others. the first person I ever shot at was a legitimate attempt at more gear so I guess that amounts to banditry (I lost that fight to his axe when I ran outta ammo, lesson learned) and the other one was prowling around at NEAF so I tossed a couple down range as discouragement (never saw him again). I've spoken to about a dozen people with mixed results and been shot at a few more times than that, again with mixed results. I play the game around the edges of where all the hubbub happens and observe what people do. I've seen some horrible things in my travels across the map and I've been witness to interesting, possibly helpful things as well. to me the point of the game is to keep my lil girl alive and healthy and I have found the best way to do that is to avoid as much player interaction as possible. I am perfectly happy to creep thru a town behind someone else and pick up the things they leave behind. I am alive and I have a clear conscience. I am not a bandit.

I am perfectly happy to creep thru a town behind someone else and pick up the things they leave behind. I am alive and I have a clear conscience. I am not a bandit. I'm a lurker on the fringe as well. Just a few minutes ago I was doing something I rarely do... Looting the NEAF, trying to find that darn Amphibia mag. (Never found one and carrying the pistol for days) I really want to have it when hunting comes into play! Anyway, as I usually avoid the high traffic/deathmatch areas, I was ultra careful scouting it out in advance from range with an LRS. No activity for over 10 minutes. Creeped up to the ATC, skirting the hangers, no magazine. As I walk out, I see another player running my way behind the hangers. Try and turn the corner around the building and get shot in the legs (he was a really bad shot as I was maybe 20m away). I skirt the building, bandage (thankfully legs weren't broken), quickly check my FNX to insure its ok, and then check the servers. A player had logged out - skirt the building, check the stairwell and doorway, nobody - apparently he was the one who logged. I run like the devil for the hills. Once I get there I assess my situation and find the Amphibia and my pants are ruined. Let that be a lesson to me for not following my own rules! Still kicking, and wiser for the experience. (He was going to get some .45 bullets from me if he hadn't logged however... :))
