Can we destroy loot while it's on the ground?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone knows the answer to this question..

Can we destroy loot that is on the ground say with an axe or firearm? So instead of people hiding M4s and what not they could just be hitting them with an axe a few times?

I know.. Im bored, what can I say? ;)

You can't at the moment, And honestly I hope it's not added, People complain about not finding loot, Imagine if the only loot they could find was ruined, The forums would be alive with the tears of the unjust.

No, you cannot.  Trust me, I have tried destroying items with my axe and firearms.  Currently, the only way to destroy items is when they are in the inventory of another player and doing damage to the player.

People don't seem to have a problem with everyone and their mother killing everyone on sight.  It would just be another dynamic of the game.  Also, depending on how the loot respawn system works, it might not even matter.

If it becomes possible to repair ruined items, possibly linked to a skill-based system that was mooted, then it'd absolutely make sense for players to deliberately damage or ruin guns that they find. It'd also add depth to the game if most guns that spawn are damaged when you find them (and consequently less accurate).

But until the repairing mechanics are in place, I don't think it should be possible to damage them. It'd wreck the game.

I would like to be able to blow up gas canisters by shooting at them or putting them into a camp fire.

That would be useful.

EDIT: Maybe I should clarify how it would be useful. :) If you're out in the middle of the night and the forest is teeming with zombies you might want to create a distraction. Throwing a gas canister onto the camp fire will create a BLEVE (google it), which will not only put out the camp fire due to the blast wave, but also make the zombies go towards the sound, allowing you to get out of there safely.

How about you kill someone nearby. Find the loot at then plant it on their corpse.

Then shoot them a few times :-) Lots of work, but might have the same effect.

I wish. What I started doing, and yes this is quite evil, is taking the second firearm / weapon into my hands, and dropping it in a near by forest :) lol You can however, put the weapon into your inventory, or have someone else do it, and shoot it. (Only works for smaller weapons)

Good question OP, it's not something I had even thought about before (although it is fairly logical assumption).

It does, however, leave the game open to the dick move of running through a town axing everything so they are ruined and useless but nothing would respawn because they are still on the server and not used up.

That's just what I do sometimes, especially if I've recently run into some players I didn't like the look of. This serves two purposes - I clear weapons out of their way so they can't get me until I'm long gone, and they're also there if I die and spawn close enough to run round and pick them up.

In fact I've started doing this tactically - finding a safe spot, leaving my backpack, heading into town to grab some food and drink and then returning. I notice far less people go after me when I don't look geared and if I do get taken out all my gear is not available to them (and possibly is to me if I get there in time). The downside is you need to pick your spot - I once left a full backpack and weapons under a tree only to be unable to pick them up again when I returned. D'oh!

I wish weapons could be broken while they are on the ground.

That might actually work maybe...if their Vest/hoodie/whatever is not ruined, place items in there and shoot at the body...maybe it ruins the items....have never really watched out if the status of the clothing gets worse when you shoot at the dead body wearing it......*hm* gotta try that out some time...And for guns: Hide them in houses that never have loot.l Ever. So only real desperate or new players will find them ;)

I've tried doing this as well, but the server resets are too frequent at the moment. Leaving all your best kit amongst the trees when you go down into town to talk to someone is ok in theory, but once you lose it all to a server reset it becomes a lot less appealing to do it ever again.

Hmmm I belive I've seen a few QQ threads about being killed here.

But as others suggested dropping it off outside the building is a quick and fairly good way to hide stuff.

lol, I imagine people using axes on items just to ruin it for other people

This is a very good strategy. I will start playing like this, no joke. In a way, even your group friends can benefit from this; nothing becomes ruined.

Not sure how cruel this is either, but once I did kill someone, I ensured that I feasted on their body. I would eat and drink everything in their inventory. Vomiting was no way of stopping me lol

Everyone talks about loot respawning but what exactly does that mean? Would it respawn loot without needing a server restart every four hours? Is that the only benefit?

Yes....hm....no.

That's what I read (quite some time ago, can't find any newer things to this: when a server starts, only some random amount of loot is spawned. Every other lootplace gets a random timer from 30 (?) minutes up to..well...hours. Everytime something is looted, the random timer is set again, like it was an initial spawn.

So it would also solve the server hopping issue, at least a bit ;)

But server restarts would be necessary anyway i think - at least ArmA needs that to clear the cache/ram/drive because otherwise the performance goes down like hell after some hours...

Weapons and ammo, yes.

All other shit, NO

^ this.. I mean it would be "unrealistic" if everything was not the same but I would prefer if food could not be affected, etc..

If I had to take a guess, i'd say it would be implmented (if it ever will) on object base level, which would mean: Everything that has a damage indicator (so...everything you can pick up^^) can be destroyed.

Server restarts were used in the mod because the game became laggy (presumably though bad optimisation), a quick restart solved that, it was never intended to replenish loot. Loot itself should respawn based on the amount currently in use on the server.

To think of it from a very simplistic point of view if you have a town where 20 tins of beans have spawned, and someone runs through the town, picks up 4 tins of beans, puts 2 of them into their backpack and eats 2 then there are still 18 in existence, but the other two need to be replenished at some point without needing to restart the server. As I say that's a very simplistic view.

Actually, I think you can! I heard a person eating on the firestation roof, so i climbed to the first roof, and he was on top of the tower, he saw me, and hid. i only had melee and didnt want to get wrecked by going up. so i waited under the right side ledge, and started hearing "thunk" on the roof top over and over. After about 5 mintues of this, a naked guy came hurtling down to his death. Assuming that he just didnt want to risk dying while logging and suicided, i climbed up to find loot EVERYWHERE. I was syched until I saw everything was ruined or badly damaged, save for his m4. So, i think he used his fire axe to ruin all his items so i couldnt have them.
