Dealing with zombies unarmed?

Recommended Posts

Okay so I just started playing. I finally managed to get myself to a town that had closed doors, off the beaten path, to find some loot ( I assumed since the doors were closed it meant the loot had spawned, how long does it take doors to reset?)

As soon as I arrived I was spotted by a zombie, I ran away but eventually decided to try and fight. I was badly injured in this fight and bled out unconcious. Is there a technique to melee fighting zombies? Is there a better plan? I tried entering a building and closing the door but the zombie was able to walk through the door? I have tried just running from the zombies, but it seems they chase me for unbelieveable distances, I'm talking 5-10 minutes of running. Is there a way to lose them?

Basically, what is the best way to deal with zombies if you have no weapon?

Go for the head, if they fall down keep beating them.  They're only dead if they fall face up.  If you can keep moving (side stepping).  This will probably change when we get the 'final' zombie AI in, right now its pretty much just placeholder.

Not all buildings have loot, not to mention that the doors can be opened then closed by someone who looted the place earlier.

Just do zig-zags around them and punch them from sides. They look like slow motion for a sec after they do attack. But if you have no weapon, you better run. Don't worth it to risk injury for nothing. It's not RPG game, no upgrading etc. and no loot from Z, so just run.

First thing I do as a newspawn is take off my shirt, drag it from my inventory off to the left "in your vicinity" area, and then right click it and choose to tear into rags. You can use those to stop bleeding from almost any wound that doesnt immediately kill you and weather doesnt effect your character on the regular server branch yet I dont think.

As far as fighting zombies unarmed goes, I tend to avoid it unless I have nothing to lose and just feel like playing around.  Since youre just starting though, Id just focus on learning your way around and checking forums like these and all the youtube videos out there for ideas and tips.

strafe in circles using A or D keys, turn with mouse, raise your fists and aim above their head. These tactics will not work, or made harder after the next patch, when you start getting swarmed from re spawning zeds.

I suggest running away and breaking line of sight. This means running around buildings, through trees and behind walls. Shouldn't take you too long to lose them and regain your safety :)

The two posts above pretty much covered it.  The zombies are fairly slow and if you're in a town breaking line of sight with them is fairly easy.  Make sure to run with your fists up as it makes you faster. You'll learn what it takes to break line of sight and lose a Zed and wherever you end up in the town is where you start to loot.  I don't bother to attack zombies until I've found a fireman's axe and some sort of head gear.

The damage/health system is complicated, but you regenerate "blood" and "health" if you're very well fed and hydrated. Just start by focusing on evading zombies and getting fed. Also the better the condition an item is in the more damage it'll absorb (if clothes) or the more nutrients it will provide (food).

^ A couple extra points added, good stuff.

Although I do believe that sprinting with fists up is nerfed from the last patch.

Raise fists > Aim for head > Knock down zombie > Circle around to their back > Punch like crazy > Repeat!

Right now, you can knock them down with a hit to the head, then keep beating on them until they get up. WIth the new "can't aim" melee system we're getting on friday, you'd better just run.

I think it's losing time, so ran away to get stuff and arm.

Only fight them with bare hands if you are out of way.

My opinion.

Unless u have a bandage or an extra shirt to use as bandage do not fight with a zombie even with an axe.

run away from zeds you can out move them, break line of sight that key to losing the zeds use pinetrees if you can or bushes I think they can see through walls but you can try buildings,if your in a town you can zig zag through walkways other buildings and it'll confuse them and they will go silent. \you can loot that way till u get one of the axes fireaxe is the best in my opinion and it fits in the backpack if you don't like the yellow/red. they can be found in the firestation construction site/warehouses and the jail at the airfields. and doors closed/open don't mean shit I close doors behind me sometimes just to throw folks off to my trail etc. I hoped I covered all your questions and if I gave u wrong advice or missed anything I'm sorry good luck in your adventures.

Like a cat stuck outside in the rain, just stand next to a door, and sing the Song of Your People.... All... Night... Long.

Zeds will love you for it.

I wouldnt reccomend closing doors once inside a building, you will get stuck and those extra couple of seconds it takes you to line up in front of the door to open it, zombie can make u bleed.

Dont worry so much about zombies at the moment.

In the current state of the game get an axe and use it, if you cant get an axe your better off with fists. Go first person and just punch them in the face, you knock them down with one face punch and batter them while they stand up > rinse and repeat till they dont get up anymore.

Run, break line of sight to zombie/es, get some buildings or a ridge line between and then wait to see/hear if they're still chasing.

Right now, you can punch them and strafe to avoid them.

When the next update comes... zombies are tougher, more aggressive, and come in larger numbers; so if you make too much noise fighting one zombie, others will come running, so my recommendation would be to learn to run and hide. If you can get some distance between you and the zombies and crouch in tall grass, they'll seem to stop and go into a "hunt" mode for a minute, then return to normal.

You can usually avoid making zombies aggro by crouch and walking slowly through grass, near fences, walls, etc... and travel at night, it seems zombies don't notice you so well at night.
