What are your biggest concerns and fears regarding the near/far future of the game?

Recommended Posts

Let's follow the Minecraft development plan, and allow players to light items on fire before building a working GUI.

This game, with such great potential, seems destined to fail.

almost as bad as making the most detailed compass ever seen and not having working zombies in a zombie MMO :)

Joe_mcentire, I share your second fear.

I'm afraid that zombies will remain an annoyance, mosquito bites in your journey to survive in this post apocalyptic world. Right now I pass the time boxing them with my bare hands, up to four at a time, while circling.

I'm having a great time going after and protecting myself from human beings, but I would love to have a greater zombie threat. Fearsome, mindless, bloodthirsty, powerful, hordes.

Too many zombies would make it near impossible to loot anything without a way to barricade doors, so that would be nice too.

Welcome to DayZ Alpha testing, how may i help you?

Welcome to 7 months of Alpha Testing with little to no improvements of big problems.... How may I help you?

You missed the point. Some of us who just as strongly wish success for the game believe there are some indications that development is not on par. I hope Im dead wrong and the controls and desync are fixed in the next 8 months. If not, it will not be good for anyone.

Cant believe i wasted time reading this thread.

If the majority of these "fears" are actually peoples fears then I can safely say they have nothing to worry about.

I think i'm going to take a break from the forums for awhile people are so illogical it hurts my brain.

one of my personal "downfall-of-the-project-along-with-the-community"-ideas ;) are horses. i don't really know why we should need them and what the fuss is all about them? i don't even know how they should fit even so ideally into this scenario but Dean and the devs seem to have jumped on that bandwagon. the effort going into horses and their whole mechanic would be just ridiculous compared to the actual benefit imo.

but let's just see...

I will commit to just shooting someone's horse and running off every time if they impliment horses. Then the guy can just sit there looking for his attacker wondering why.

keep in mind. the thread is not actually one "just recently started". those also represent things from several updates prior.

Which makes this thread meaningless.  It was made two months.  Count them, 2 months, into the alpha.  We are "only" going into the 7th month of alpha and there has been "a lot" of changes to DayZ.

come on! obviously there are/were and will ever be certain concerns for many people. i wanted to offer a stage for anyone stating their minor or major concerns and inner fears without the nerving sidetone of polemics and blind rage.

you could also use this thread as some sort of mirror to reflect what you were seeing/expecting back then and are seeing/expecting now. maybe everything went up in smoke by now..

you could also feel free to "debunk" certain concerns or wise up users here.

This is why companion animals and farming won't work until there is a good barricading system that isn't easily exploitable.

My fear is that it will never be completed. *Looks at DayZ mod*

True - but thats eventually the fate of most mods.

My fears:

  • end of development/support (of course)
  • change in payment policy (both microtransactions and monthly payment would probably kill the spirit of the game)
  • the game being too easy and forgiving (especially when handling death and respawn)
  • the addition of game magic (items that disappear when the owner dies, items that can only be equipped by one person etc.)
  • the addition of any artificial identification feature (floating names, icons etc.)
  • the addition of any artificial "gameplay enforcement" (e.g. paranoia for bandits, items for heroes)
  • 3rd person "wallhack" staying in game (3rd person is okay, being able to look over or around obstacles with it is not)
  • a sequel (just moneymaking unless its done many years later with much better technology)

What do you mean? Logically speaking there is more evidence of facts to have fear than to feel positive about the games potential completetion. If within the last seven months we saw at least one major problem fixed than there would still be much more to fear.

That inevitably the slow addition of features will lead people to create their own maps like "Dayz nuketown" where you start with an M4 and vehicles are more common than tins of food. Frankie will play on these new maps, increasing their popularity and it will draw players away from the 'true' game.

This is going to happen no matter what your fears are.

i wonder if anything has changed in your opinions and concerns  ;)

Going back again and see what i've posted back then:

  • by far too many "we want to do this/look into that" features which we most likely won't see in the game eventually. - rage/tears/disappointment may emerge.
i guess this one is absolutely a none-issue

  • zeds will never be the way i personally always imagined them to be or we will never see them in their full potential.
still waiting to see that first working-draft from Bratislava

  • MMO architecture and load on servers are such a restriction that we will never see "enough" zeds, loot, players, wildlife and other objects.
that's really the litmus test, isn't it? let's wait and see what a new renderer brings

Biggest fear is the game will move away from its mil sim arma roots and the influx of casual noobs will help shape the game to be a more forgiving and casual game.

We are already seeing some of that with unrealistic weapon behavior and characteristics.

Then again I have more faith in the modding community than the actual developers so I am sure they would fix everything wrong in the vanilla game.

The modding community should start out with ArmA if you want mil sim

You should stay away from the popular DayZ SA if you don't like "casual noobs"

We have unrealistic weapon behavior AND unrealistic zombies

in a completely NON-historic unrealistic environment... non of this ever existed, nothing in it is similar to any environmental situation that has ever existed .. it's a "game"

Maybe you could check up on zombies and tell us where they are manufactured, how many exist on the planet, what are their serial numbers and ranges, what modifications have been produced, what devices you can fit them with, and if they take crosswinds, air-temperature, humidity, and coreolis effect into account when they hit you, please...  ?

I'm really sure some of those zombies are not completely realistic

and I'm certain that some of their hits should have been misses if they had been properly programmed to act according to the exact physics of real zombies

BUT

DayZ is not a mil sim.

please don't take offence at the above comments, I know you are a knowledgeable gun buff and I have no objection to that (why should I?). I apologize in advance if you don't see the humor of your own contribution

<< game = "realistic guns + realistic zombies + casual noobs" >>

The only comment that I really want to take you up on is the quote "casual noobs"   So BI is going to pander to "casual noobs" and wreck DayZ SA ? When ?

it seems one of your favorite concepts - the "influx of casual noobs"

I could reply "who the hell do you think you are?" but I apologize (again) in advance for even thinking such a thing. It was the first thing that came into my head when I read "casual noobs"..

And a day later it's STILL the thing that comes into my head.. so I thought I ought to mention it. Sorry.

My biggest concern is that with Rocket gone the team might try to curve too many behaviors/take the game in a slightly different enough direction to lose a bit of what made it special.  I think there's an underlying current of this already happening with sniping, where they seem to want to regulate it to an unfounded degree by holding off putting in any sniper rifles until the loot economy is done.  I don't think it's an inherently bad decision and could turn out alright, as I don't think sniper rifles should be super common, but no other weapons are currently being regulated in the same way so it makes me worry a bit about the motives behind it more than the act itself.  I think trying to curve specific behaviors to a high degree just goes against the essence of the game.  Why is a 75 round drum mag acceptable but a 10 round sniper rifle isn't?  We'll have to wait and see.

Aside from that example, talk of dynamic events has me cautiously optimistic.  I really don't want to see anything like ai convoys or helicopters flying before they crash because it takes away from the experience of seeing vehicles and knowing they are player driven and all the excitement that comes with that.  While various versions of the mod had flying helicopters to shoot down which were some what cool, I felt they really detracted from those moments where you hear a helicopter and know its a player/group and have no idea what their intentions are going to be.  Instead it became "heliocopter! oh, it's ai :["  I think that again, this is something Rocket really understood and I just hope the team can continue this line.  There's no real indication they will stray from this but it's something I worry about because the majority of people don't put a lot of thought into this sort of thing and just think "it's fun and cool to shoot down helicopters!" and hopefully the team doesn't just concede.

Those types of things are my concern more so than bugs and that sorta stuff.  The game losing its core elements.  So far so good though, and there's a lot of positive talk from the team that makes me think they'll hold true.
