Servers with connection issues to central hive

Thanks for keeping us all posted Rocket. You guys are doing a great job, not only with the game, but also with the speed at which you acknowledge issues such as this. It's a refreshing change from the AAA studios who take weeks (or months) to even acknowledge that something is wrong with their game.

The problem with that being, if you stored it locally, its only guaranteed that someone with coding experience would design a program to access the save files to be able to edit the inventory. Saving characters on their network is a very secure way to store it, as whoever would try to access their mainframe would be arrested because its against federal law.

 

That data can always be encrypted. Steam games do it pretty well I would say. I would rather risk someone hacking their inventory than randomly losing my stuff when I join a server! Usually the simplest answer is the best and I think storing it locally would solve so much so easily.

That would take wayyyyy too long, just filter through the servers that say Hardcore, Experimental or Testing

I played on over 15-20 servers on Hardcore with the same Character. For over four hours since the 10am maintence, Then it got reset??? So that means from my first post above more than half the US-east/west/central servers are busted? So which ones are considered core servers?

Again, another problem grounds this idea to a halt, encrypting files is pretty hard to do, especially with a small company like Bohemia. Also, when the client/game goes to load the file, it would take a while to decrypt the file, depending on how much encryption is required to seal the file. During the decryption stage, a coder could easily access the game's index in order to see the process on how to decrypt the file, rendering the encryption type useless :(

Really need to know provider, and IP. Certainly we have verified that the core servers that we run perform normally (not a single ticket raised for those servers) - therefore problem servers have to be manually checked by us then we need to contact the provider and work with them to find the solution.

 

We are going to build in a check into the server that will stop the server running if it cannot get an authorized connection through to the central server.

 

Our GS server had a similar issue this morning here in the US. We got in and our old characters were there, "hurray fixed!", we thought. But after a server restart to set the time to 12 noon it was the same all over again, back to the coast as new survivors for us. This is the same GS server mentioned on page 2 of this thread.

Also, when the client/game goes to load the file, it would take a while to decrypt the file, depending on how much encryption is required to seal the file. And it would have to be encrypted locally, which would mean the process used to encrypt it would be available locally. The game has to RUN realtime, to obfuscate that data locally while encrypting it while obfuscating the encryption. Nobody does that. If it was a good idea, then MMO's would do it.

 

This is an alpha, the purpose of the alpha is to identify these issues and fix the bugs. The community has been helpful in this instance in identifying areas of problems, usually related to unique side cases. We've come a long way already, this is not the time to go off on crazy misadventures. Stay the course, fix the bugs,.

So since the servers are now talking with the main hive again, this should mean that anyone with a "reset" character should get their pre-patch character back since the servers they were going to were not getting correct info and not saving correctly also?

Yeah, most likely the servers are still trying to get the servers fitted with the main update, its a big load to attach to most characters, and at times when the server has 10-20 people on it, the server base can't always keep the data, so, like an aircraft needing to lose weight, it dumps the memory, like the fuel dump of an aircraft. Its not usually needed for servers, as most can handle it, but when its not an official server from Bohemia, the server dependance is from a local ISP, which doesn't have as much memory to sustain every character like an industrial server does.  :(

so even with the bad servers off i still spawn on the coast and then when i spawn back in on another server im a char from a week ago lol i only get 1 day off a week so can we please have this fixed by saturday night  :D

Every game has hackers in it. Ill risk hackers with max inventory compared to randomly losing my character any day. And DayZ has been on top of the Steam sales for over a month, they have the resources to sort this out and really need to address this problem as its a very basic important problem instead of adding new sodas and berries.....

Really REALLY appreciate you taking the time to keep us up to date with all that is going on right now. I'm loving this latest patch despite the glitches. I also have confidence for the future of DayZ and am here for the long run. There are many who are skeptical and think/thought you'd do a runner once the money came in. I am sure it is a minority and that I am not alone in dismissing these silly and rather cheap rumours.

Break what isn't broken but don't fix what is, well done. Zombies still walk through walls, melee cannot be used in doors, but yeah fuck around with the memory structures for some unknown reason.

 

My character is gone, he's just plain simple gone, he didn't get shot, he didn't get jumped by zombies, he just vanished, no amount of reconnecting and changing file names have fixed that. He might still be somewhere on the hive but I can't get him back.

 

There's a very simple check that could prevent something happening in cases when its server v hive.

Attach three values to a character:

1) An ID number (when it was made YYMMDDHHMMSS + some random numbers).

2) Value of all the items in question on the character. Higher quality items obviously being worth more.

3) Boolean value for if the character has died (1 = dead, 0 = alive).

Also, the values in the hive should be bound to the steamID of the user only (alternatively assign each steamID a cd-key-like value). No names, no user names, no other useless crap data that is not permanent.

 

Now:

If the ID numbers are the same that means that the server has the correct data from the hive and whatever the server returns will overwrite what the hive has.

If the ID numbers are different and the hive has the character marked as alive. The hive should reject all updates from the server up until the value of the player's loot is greater than the value of the character stored on the hive. This will prevent an empty old character taking precedence over a new character which has found some loot and it will prevent an empty new character replacing a stocked old one.

If the character on the hive is marked as dead the newly created character replaces it immediately.

 

This is kind of checks you learn in basics of C++. Is the entire dev team lacking any kind of common sense?

your character isn't gone, the server you are playing on has config errors and is not connecting to the hive, if you connect to a server that communicates with the hive your character will be back, simple as that.  It is not the patch that broke things but server admins who are slow to update their servers.

Every game has hackers in it. Ill risk hackers with max inventory compared to randomly losing my character any day. So you'd rather risk getting killed and losing your stuff, then randomly losing your stuff? :huh:

All of these servers cant be broken because I moved the same char from server to server until about 20 min ago.

You act as if everyone would be able to hack data stored locally. Hackers are rare, but this error of losing your character is very frequent. If storing it locally wont fix it something more drastic needs to be done. In a game where your character is everything, losing it seems like a basic massive error on the devs part. Even if it is server side, something needs to be done ASAP before new towns, weapons, items, etc!

 

From what it sounds like from this dev here to me is that this issue will happen for the forseeable future if server admins are not properly setting a server up, and that is not acceptable. Get your priorites in line and fix the glaring massive issues before adding new content!

I think(but not 100% sure) that the problem is, your character data is getting lost in-between server changes. Not only that, but Hardcore is a new mode, not necessarily in the fact of new things, but that the data in mainly new and servers aren't that used to it's new code. When you log onto a server, the Hive renders that data into a physical data form, in the form of a character, but when you log off, it has to de-render that physical data back to written data. I think the problem is when you log off, your character data isn't completely de-rendered, so the data is lost, when the data is lost, it cannot be retrieved, so it creates a new character for a replacement. Most likely the only solution is fixing the server itself, a process which can only be done by the ISP.

problem is you don't need to be a hacker to hack games, it only takes one hacker to write a script or cheat engine and distribute it and then the game is ruined for everyone, having stuff stored on the server is more secure, so let's chill and let the devs do their work, it's in our interest in the long term even if we suffer a bit in the short term.

Just played for about 4 hours. Server restarted. Character still saved. Switched servers. Character still saved. No rubber banding. Barely any desync. Seems pretty much fixed to me.

Not sure who the host is.

 

Edit: I logged out after I was reset gave it some time and then joined a new server just now and have been rolled back, the roll-back is from my time playing that server, It appears that the server was definitely connected to the hive when I first joined but had lost hive connection during the play session, the restart was not the cause of the loss of hive connection but was just the point at which it became apparent.

 

Edit 2: This is not a complaint, I'm loving your game despite the problems, just trying to give you some helpful data.

Alright, step 1: chill out, step 2: let me explain and get yourself to cool off. The problem is server<company formed. In the meaning that, the devs aren't COMPLETELY to blame here. The game is there and fine, but the ISP servers from official (Hive connected anyway) servers, because some, if not most, cant always be 100% compatible (not game terms) with the client of the game. The devs CAN fix this, but it would be a shorter amount of time if the devs worked along with the custom server hosts, but that isn't always possible. Now, I too have had this issue, but, only with hardcore difficulty servers, not with regular servers. Also, try connecting servers closest to your area of connection. Thats about the only thing I can do to help at this point, sorry. :(

Than, and yeah same here, I've been playing everyday for at least a week and I've switched servers and my character has still saved.
