Dealing With Loss

Recommended Posts

How do some of you more seasoned players deal with losing all your shit when you die?  I had a real good setup that took me hours to find and of course i got killed at the construction sight (with the crane). I ended up taking a few rounds and bleeding bad, went to run away, got some hard cover and then tried to apply the bandage but nothing happened.  I fell unconscious just as a bad guy came at me with a knife.

I was pissed at the time but im over it.  It is actually infuriating to lose your character in this game because it means a complete wipe and start again on the coast.

When you start a new character you actually have a solid objective again. IMO the first hour is the most fun.

Welcome to DayZ..

I agree with Mos1ey. Standalone (for now with no other objectives out there other than Players vs Player), is about getting loot and hunting for other players. Either to force feed them, join groups (and harass other groups) or to simply be a lone ranger and SOS. Sadly to say, this is the game for now.

When you die, you actually get to find stuff again. It's amazing how happy you get by seeing the same loot over and over and over again, just to pick it up and loose it and repeat.. :)

Cheers.

I fear dying and I hate dying. I hate losing all my gear, but I hate losing all me gear to another player more. However as soon as I spawn again, I feel a great relief and feel I can play more freely and are always happy to start all over.

This. Death in DayZ is liberating. Reminds me of a quote from Fight Club: "The more shit you own, the more shit owns you." As soon as I die I find a measure of relief. Then I rambo at full speed at armed players, if any are around. That was more fun when Balota spawns were still in game, because I'd get shot, and spawn right outside of the airfield again and charge back in. w00t!

Honestly....I sit there and grieve for a few seconds. I step out for a smoke, relax, calm down, let the adrenaline wash away. I make an effort to remember why I'm having fun with DayZ...the loss of a character drives me nuts, but the brutality of it is exactly why I enjoy the game.

Every "life" in CoD or BF is meaningless, every "life" in Skyrim or Dragon Age is meaningless, just load up your quicksave.

I care and struggle with loss in DayZ. Seriously...no other game in history, literally, has higher highs AND lower lows than DayZ. There is real value in your character.

Just keep your head up, take a break, start fresh, reevaluate your game plan...its tough out there.

I deal with it by figuring out where I am and setting my new course of action. The first few times I got geared up and died, I was pretty upset. All that effort and gear gone. Now that I know the map a lot better and know the good spawn points, I can be pretty well geared up in about 2/3 hours without server hoping. I have a couple servers book marked that are generally low population. One good trip through elektro, cherno and then balota on an empty server and you're right back where you left off.

Once you can build a tent and drop loot in it, dying and starting over won't be so bad.

this game is brutal like that, if you lost all your stuff no worries just go out and find some more stuff, it gives you things to do, and word of advice ppl shoot on site here most of the time so be aware of your surroundings, especially big towns. This is an early Alpha build so there isnt much to do, learn the map, gather equipment, help friendly players, no need to be upset. After a few times of death takes me maybe 30 min to gather most necessary supplies. Keep your head up and enjoy.

I agree with this, although I will add EvE Online as another game where loss is really felt.  You lose a 300 million isk ship that you spent days working to afford and you feel it.

Confirm/Deny is this in the plans for this game.  I am someone who never played the mod or Arma II prior to trying Day Z SA so was not aware of the possibility of a tent.  That would make me very happy. It seems like it would be a natural function to be able to put a tent somewhere deep.

Add to that the fun of tent/base hunting and raiding and i think you can agree it would enrich the game play.

I used to play on an old MUD where you had to apply for characters, get them approved, and had perma-death.  So when you died you had to wait, often times days, before you could play again.  I'm not trying to minimize the losses of this game when you die, but at least we don't have to wait several days after dying before being able to respawn :)

i guess due to playing EQ on Rallos Zek, (PVP server... 1 item can be taken from your character upon death.... and before that it was all loot can be taken)

and then playing EvE for some time ... that game has some HARDCORE loss ... things that take 10-20 people weeks to obtain... can be lost in minutes

and of course tons of Hardcore characters in Diablo 2
------------------------------------------------------------------

But sticking to your question on how we deal with the loss of gear/characters/loot

I laugh.... i literally laugh... because 10 minutes ago.... i was force feeding a guy rotten apples... i probably deserve to be shot down like a dog...... and even if i wasnt...... at some point i will do something that will monkey wrench another survivors plan.....

Sometimes your the one holding the gun..... sometimes ur the one getting cuffed and told to give up your pants.... only to be beat down by a man in a clown mask with no pants and a yellow raincoat....

Thats my first step.... i usually laugh about it and plop it into the "DayZ diary" of my brain...

The second step is realizing... OH MAN ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN! NEW SPAWN TIME!!!!!! and off i go....

heres a few fresh spawn stories that you may look forward to experiencing (im talking these things happened within 5 minutes of spawning)

and if the next little spawn story doesnt make a fresh new spawn seem a little brighter then i dunno what would about this game

One time i spawned.... walked 2 feet.... someone literally comes falling off a ladder and plop... dies 2 feet from me.... fully geared.... i laughed so hard over it.... (Thanks almighty day z god for smiting this man off his ladder and gracing me with full military gear within 3 mins of spawning) ........

Another time i literally walked 10 feet from where i was onto a road...... mosin geared survivor.... hoodie.. ammo...med kit.. great starting package.... woot woot!!  (on this one i ended up dieing from an apartment building ladder in cherno about 20 mins later)

and the best one so far.... i spawned near solnich ..... walk down the road for about 3 minutes... 3 survivors coming up road.. 2 of them pretty damn geared... the other is a tag along with just a melee weapon.... (Now i already didnt like where i spawned so i immediatly say HEY JUST SHOOT ME I WANNA RESPAWN) ... they start talking some nonsense and asking me for something.... im like ok they dont wanna shoot me.... then ill make them

Fists go up.... and i rush the dude right infront of me (Now i can hear them clearly) "OH SHIT HES GOIN CRAZY" one of them screams out as i start pummeling one of them ... the other geared survivor pulls out a gun... i get hit once while charging him in a zig zag... and start popping him .. "oh man oh man oh man hes going nuts hes crazy" ... i connect with his head this time and he goes down .... jackpot... got the inventory up .. pulled his M4 off... shot up armed guy number 2 and looked at the 3rd.. unarmed survivor..."Do you want to mess with me too?!?" i ask

he to my surprise says "Dude.... thanks... those guys took me hostage down the road and forced me to come or get shot... so i followed... please dont kill me i swear im not with them" .....

"oh shit.... i was wondering why you were so undergeared compared to them... uhm well.... take that guys gear there.... im going to take the hell of now before someone else shows up.... have a nice day dude"

survivor #3 "your the fucking man ......i wish i recorded that

me already starting to leave "yeah man.. me too... me too..... "

and off i went to go die in one ridiculous way or another in the future ..........

Right now I'm comfortable with it. I don't really haul much - bandages, can opener, compass, canteen and a pistol strictly for protection. Takes me 2 hours at most to get those essentials and I fill up on calories too. Of course this will change when they increase the number of zombies.

Other than that I've found playing on two hives helps. Even if your main guy gets killed and your alt's only got an axe, it still feels better than starting from scratch. It's also nice to have a character with less to lose sometimes, so you don't have to risk your kitted out guy every session.

Investing alot of time to something just to lose it in a blink of an eye can be sometimes kind of traumatizing and not too funny

... That's why KOS leaves me cold and empty inside

When I first started playing this game, I was clueless. I ran around and died of starvation several times. I rarely saw anyone. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing.

I was lucky enough to have 6 friends who are hardcore at this game, so we teamspeak and I learned a ton. Now, water, food and zombies are not an issue at all. I dont even get lost any more. Your biggest threat is people. But I feel your pain. So if you dont have friends, go watch some beginner videos on youtube. There are tons and they are helpful. They should help you so survival is easier and getting weaps is attainable.

So on dying- well, youre going to die a lot. A LOT. Anyone who hasn't, hasn't played this game enough. Personally, I thought I'd get pissed if I died, but I died so much, that after a while, it didnt bother me. Plus, its very strange, but after a while of being fully geared up, it gets a little boring. You either go to a hot spot and shoot bad guys (people shooting bambis) or you decide to explore the N area towns. Its fun and all, but after a while, you kind of crave that bambi experience again. I was at the NW airfield and found ammo galore, an M4, food, everything and that place was a ghost town. I actually sucided because the gathering part was boring. I didnt want to run 30 mins to get somewhere. Weird.

So dont get attached to your stuff. Its going to go bye bye, trust me. The gathering experience is pretty fun, if you make it that way.

My 2 cents.

A death and loosing all my stuff sets me free! no more panic about looking after my loot.

It's annoying dying (especially to ladders etc) but in a way it is quite liberating. I find the first hour or so of a character the most fun. I feel safe running around, can interact with people without worry. Finding stuff is fun again.

If it wasn't for the risk of dying and losing all your stuff, this game wouldn't be so damn scary/thrilling.

and the hilariousness of being a fresh spawn and happening upon  a distracted geared up player looking around a house.... punching him down.. taking his gun and running without killing him... is priceless

stick around to hear the reaction on their mic

"HEY GET BACK HERE ASSHOLE.... HOW DID YOU DO THAT?!?!"

remember.. as a fresh spawn... you have nothing to lose.. and he has a whole delicious plate of beans ....

GET DEM BEANS!!!!

See it as a chance to try a new strategy, with each life comes a new location, a fresh start, and new set of morals and beliefs,

DO what you think you should do, not what you have done

For me, it's not about the gear, it's about the journey I've taken to get the gear. Yeah, it can be frustrating to spend lots of hours in-game and suddenly find yourself back at the coast with nothing but jeans and a tee. But TBH, even when you've got all the gear you think you need, there isn't ATM anything that really satisfies as much as finding that elusive can opener and a can of beans that has somehow remained overlooked, or finding that first gun with a few rounds nearby on a freshie and thinking that you might just be able to survive on this one.

So when I die, I get up and go grab a drink, take a leak, and come back with a few fresh possibilities. Everything is possible again.

See every death as a new way to approach the game. Try to go somewhere else for your gear, visit places you haven't been to yet.

When I die though, I tend to just stop playing for the day cause if I've spent hours on a character, I don't find it that exciting to start all a-new directly after being killed so I just

take a pause for the day and have another go at it the following day. Unless I was killed within the first few hours of the character's life.

There's a simple rule in DayZ: Do not get attached you your stuff or your player because you will, at some point, lose them.

When you start a new character you actually have a solid objective again. IMO the first hour is the most fun.

Like Mos1ey said, the first hour really is the most fun. If after you die you cut your losses, and don't just full sprint to your corpse, but instead turn a new leaf... you'll likely surprise yourself with a new adventure.
