For dayZ? There is no difference in performance between 6 or 8 cores. The game isn't capable of using that many threads. So, a 6 core and 8 core processor at the same speed will perform exactly the same.

Stick with the 6 core if you already have that.

So assuming all the settings, tweaks and the machine itself are optimized for performance, is this playable on an AMD Athlon 2.0GHz dual core?

"Playable" meaning at or above 15-20 fps. I'm asking because I've ran plenty of games that, according to the minimum requirements, shouldn't have been playable, but they were very much so. I had absolutely no problems running arma 2 and I have a lifetime of experience running and playing high-end games on computers that they weren't meant for.

Has anyone had any experience trying this with a similar CPU? Gfx mem isn't so much an issue as I've frankensteined a decent card to my machine.

Yes I know I am crazy... but if it CAN possibly work, I can do it.

Almost certainly not. The minimum requirement is a 3GHz athlon dual core, you're some 50% lower in clock speed on the same CPU architecture, it's just not going to run well. DayZ is also rather sensitive to memory bandwidth, so older memory controllers and slower ram like you'd find on older computers such as your dual core Athlon 64 system aren't going to do the game any favors.

Time to upgrade my friend. Luckily it's intirely possible to build a decent rig for cheap these days.

A new build, even a poverty mode one such as an athlon II 750 quad core, FN2 motherboard and 750/ti or r9 270 would still vastly improve your dayZ (and gaming in general) experience. and would likely cost you an affordable amount, If your graphics card is more recent purchase, you could even reuse that.

Hmm, thanks for the response. I plan on getting a new machine sometime anyways so I'll probably just go ahead and buy dayz and try it out, if it doesn't run well and isn't playable then I suppose I'll have it for later.

I'm assuming I can buy/download the game once and then be able to download it again later if I want?

You can. Yeah. Once you own a game on Steam on your account you can download and install it as often as required.

edit : Errr sorry, English is not my first language still learning so I did not understand "JK" at first sight I had to think for a couple of seconds :P

well I get an average of 40fps around 60 max, but sometimes in cities I have drops to 15 or something like that

I get between 20-50 fps, with rendering settings between low and normal, post processing and such are disabled.
Game is playable for me, also in cities. I am assuming my rig will be able to run the retail version fine, but I expect to have upgraded my system by then to SSD, new mobo, new CPU, faster and more RAM, new GPU.

Is this the place where we show-off our rigs? Because people post their high-end gaming rigs here wondering if they can run DayZ SA?

I'll just leave mine here then.

Desktop

i7 4770K 4.6GHz

Gigabyte R9 290 Wf3x OC

Of course

Can I run it? :(

Win XP

Intel E5345 dual quad-core 2.3 (8cpu)

3 mb ram

nvida 760 GB  quadro FX 4600

directx 9.0c

If I install Win 7 and bump up the ram to 8 GB would that be enough to run?

Or do I need to buy new CPU also?

Yes, but with bad fps in cities until optimization (beta).

Intel dual quad-core 2.3

Probably. I'm not sure if thats a dual or quad core you have listed.  If it's a dual, you probably need an upgrade to play.

You're good for Retail without upgrading.  Especially if you overclock your cpu any.

I think you'd be better off just building a desktop machine and cutting your losses with the laptop.

Already placeing parts on a list to build one.
